***Official Thread for 2016 BSMD applicants***

Congrats to those accepted and to those waiting don’t worry. You have done great work and hopefully something will work out.

I would like to point out that I have found @HS2DirectMed is displaying a deeply concerning behavior. It is borderline unethical and almost mean of him to continue interviewing at low tier programs and holding their acceptances when he already has the best ones. As compassionate as doctors need to be it is disheartening to see such behavior.

@1CRYZX i do know where you are coming from in regards to @HS2DirectMed interviewing at lower tier programs however to be fair, he/she is absolutely entitled to interview wherever he wants so that he may have more options when it comes time to choose. as for him/she having the “best ones”, that is his/her determination to make, not anyone else’s

@HS2DirectMed I am sure you know, there are so many rankings list. SmartClass you are following, there is US News and it has separate list for Research versus Primary care.

Only 2 points I would like to make.

  1. Some times it is better to look at a range than absolute number. To some extent irrespective of which ranking, top 20% of schools may differ from bottom 20% or bottom 40% in what ever criteria. But within each range, they are going to be minor differences and not whole lot, whether it is top 20% or bottom 20% .
  2. To start, need to focus on ranking of basic medical education, then ranking lists related to residency and then later ranking list related to sub-specialty and so on. Each may differ.

Some interesting fact. One of my friend was low beat 1 day. When inquired he told he is almost on the tail end of his Ph.D and spent 3.5 years in Uof Minnesota and he adviser taken up a new job in Harvard and he need to move. Uof Minnesota is no 1 ranked for Chemical engg and he was concerned about it. He is a very smart and intelligent person and he took up 30+ year job in Intel as a top notch engineer. Guess what, few months back found out, now he decided to move on to teaching and he is a faculty in Harvard. Life is a circle and you never know what will happen and when. I am yet to ask him if he is still worried that he could not get his Ph.D from UofMinnesota!

@1CRYZX Sorry and I dont take sides and dig at anyone on board, as board is for sharing and is not for taking dig at anyone. I disagree with due respect. I have highest level of appreciation and have respect for student of caliber of @HS2DirectMed. Not only is student competent, but has shown maturity to share info and experiences. BIG DEAL for student and applicant in so competitive landscape to do it. Also to my knowledge, after REMS acceptance- which I believe is highest level so far that I have seen @HS2DirectMed has got, I don’t think @HS2DirectMed has interviewed anywhere or at least s/he has not posted about any further interview. For him/her to keep holding existing ones, it is only fair to do so, till s/he knows Financial Information for his/her top choice. Also we don’t know, if @HS2DirectMed may have already said no, where Financial are being told and it is low tier one. I think @HS2DirectMed will make a phenomenal doctor with knowledge sharing and compassionate attitude. There is zero unethical about this. Sorry to contradict you @1CRYZX. usually I dont take sides, but in this case, I had to, as I have found @HS2DirectMed very helpful contributor to this forum in 2016 BSMD process.

Oh Boy!, we are having two in row in the last 2 days. I was about to respond 3-4 weeks back when this topic came and you made a post.

@1CRYZX I agree with your general point and what you have done is greatly admirable when you made the call last year or so. But it is important when a statement about any individual is made, through diligence and facts should be in place before we can make a definite statement. I don’t know who is @HS2DirectMed. But when you made that point, at that time all that s/he said was posted feedback on his VCU interview. But probably he would have attended VCU before the first result came for him (i think it is RPI/AMC). So there is nothing s/he could have avoided on VCU. Also secondly, even if the firm offer is in hand, some people have to wait for their financial aid details and may have to skip some top tier schools and opt to go for middle or low tier schools if they have given better package and if the family can not support. So it is very hard to know and it is going to differ from person to person because of their family situation.
Third point, guess for a minute. What happens if HS2DirectMed does not make any posts and has many offers and attends interview even now. You would not have known to start with.

I agree with you if some one absolutely knows for sure that is the school they want to go and if they have received the offer they can consider to stop and give an opportunity for some one else.

Again requesting, let us stop further bickering and enjoy the moment and wish good things for every one will happen.

While Rochester is #15 as an overall medical school ranking, it ranks lower than many programs in research at #29. I guess it depends on what one is looking for in undergrad.
(US N &WR rankings)

I agree with @GoldenRock that in terms of ranking one should see the top 10 in one category and then top 20% as a block and see if they are particularly good in a specialty you are interested in (and have good residency matches) in that area. Other than that it is a comfort level in that particular school (which may be hard to determine as you make only one or two visits there).

I have heard people from TCNJ/NJMS reach Harvard for residency and people from HPME get into NJMS for residency (go figure how that happened 8-| )

@1CRYZX Just want to let you know that after receiving REMS acceptance, I immediately notified Hofstra and OU that I will not be attending interviews. However, I am attending WashU Univ. Scholars Program in Medicine and Danforth Scholarship interview. I am also eagerly waiting for Rice/Baylor invitation.

@HS2DirectMed - I thought HPME requires 3 SAT subjects. Also, any advantage in taking SAT Biology in addition to Math 2 and Chemistry? My S took those two @ the end of junior year and got 800 in both. He is planning to take Biology this June and may be Physics (if he can score consistently in practice tests without too much studying). He is a US Biology Olympiad National Semi-finalist. Does that help in lieu of SAT Biology?

Regarding the HPME notification date, I do not think it will come out near the UG decision because the email that we got from Northwestern said that they would be coming out at end of March or early April whereas NU undergrad decisions supposedly come out this week. According to their email, the HPME had not started the review process as of 5 days ago so I don’t see how decisions could come out within the next 1 week.

HPME requires SAT II math II and chemistry.

As far as residencies are concerned, where people end up depends on a lot of factors.

  1. Your overall ranking from medical school rotations and STEP scores
  2. Chosen specialty
  3. Location preference
  4. Whether you are trying doublematch with a significant other/fiance/spouse
  5. program ranking (despite what people think, Harvard is not ranked number 1 in everything)
  6. Your comfort level with a program when you attended interviews
  7. Residency matching - how you ranked a program vs how they ranked you

There are way too many variables that can determine where you end up.

@srk2017 check the link below. HPME requires “SAT Subject Exams in Math Level 2 and Chemistry. The ACT with writing may be substituted for the SAT Reasoning Exam. There are no substitutions for the Math Level 2 and Chemistry Subject Exams.”

@HS2DirectMed it is nice to see you have withdrawn from Hofstra and OU. And obviously I can understand if you are still interested at top programs like WashU and Rice/Baylor. And I also agree that you can interview wherever you want. I just thought it would help someone out there if you withdrew from the lower tiers which you wern’t going to attend like Hofstra and Albany. I didn’t apply to OU so I don’t know much about it.

Good luck in making your final decision!

@HS2DirectMed - Thanks for the link. For some reason I thought HPME required Biology also,

It seems like I am the only GAP Pitt candidate in this thread. Just want to give an update that the interview is this week. 50 candidates for 5 days, so it’s around 10 for each day. Once the interview week is over, I will share my experience with everyone.

@PigletYorkie Good Luck!

Best of luck! @PigletYorkie

Which program is better in your opinion, Stony Brook or RPI?

where r u guys hearing that northwestern ug decisions may be released sometime this week?

@88Mom88 , @Dadofhskid and @HS2DirectMed : thanks and congrats on your/ son/ daughter’s acceptances. It sure feels great and challenging at the same time for the student- easier to say it as a parent.

I did not want to touch on a sensitive topic again. However, for the benefit of the future students:
Even my D has already deferred programs and informed some schools of her decision already to facilitate other students eagerly waiting which she totally understands is very stressful, especially being a candidate that she thought wouldnt be eligible for these programs. She has done this at her own discretion because she doesn’t get on CC thread. I’m sure most here don’t even know what is going on with some of the students who are already very understanding and compassionate towards their one time competitors whom they now consider as peers and teammates through this challenging journey. However, there may be up to 1-2 or even 3 of the schools for some which you may have to hang onto until financial decisions come through which may at times take painfully long from the university end. Unfortunately, if all school decisions came of the same day it probably will make it much easier. But, this world is not a perfect world and let us all try to be calm, and respective of each other especially knowing that some parents maybe active but the children may not even look here, but are still doing the best they can on humanitarian basis even without reading CC.

For those of us- a part of this extended family who are waiting, just hang in there… The best is on its way and good luck! Let’s hope and wish that things will work out for everyone here because you all have been such amazing candidates and so helpful to each other.
