@Sparkle311 I only applied to UConn bsmd. If I don’t get into UConn then I’ll go to Johns Hopkins. Are you from CT?
@gettingintobsmd wish you all the luck. I am from MA. Do you have any idea how many students are typically waitlisted? And statistically what are the chances of getting off the waitlisted.
Also I am confused about how the waitlist works? Is there any order to the waitlist…and is there anything else that needs to be done to inform the colleges.
Anybody who can provide any information on waitlist and how it works will be appreciated.
The medical school does not send people to residencies but students themselves do. The school trains them but residency success depends on step scores, your rotation grades, research/ECs, publications etc. The average step score for a school provides an indication as to how well the students are expected to do across board.
Medical schools/practice requires testing for the rest of your life. So any of you choosing a combined program just for the sake of avoiding the MCAT needs to be aware that STEP exams last all day (MCAT is also 7-8 hours now), require 6-8 weeks of extensive preparation (people do nothing else during the prep period) and there will be board exams after finishing residency that one has to pass.
got into Stony Brook Scholars for medicine!!! now im choosing between Brooklyn BA/MD, Oklahoma MHSP, and Stony SFM. Im leaning towards stony though…
anyone with advice? ive spent many hours weighing pros and cons, but does anyone think its a mistake going to Stony over brooklyn or Oklahoma?

@bamdapplicant Stony Brook University SUNY School of Medicine is ranked tied for #56 in U.S. News Medical School Research ranking; while OU is only ranked tied for #65. However, if you are a National Merit Finalist OU’s BA/MD program is probably a better deal financially with almost a free-ride undergrad AND first year of Med School tuition FREE! My DD is going to OU’s MHSP.
Hi everyone. This is really for those applying in NY area, but if you do decide to go in another program and were accepted else where too, please let the other programs know so kids can have a chance off the waiting list!
Are there any facebook groups for various bs/md programs?
My brother goes to SBU and is in the engineering scholars for medicine program, he’s a junior and he enjoys it
I got into BU SMED and I am potentially receiving a full ride to Emory including tuition, room, and board. BU, however, is not giving me any merit scholarships. I’ve visited both schools and I can see myself at either. I just don’t know if taking the scholarship to Emory or the guranteed spot to med school at BU is better. Any advice?
Why would you give up 4 years of free education which costs other people 250k? I have friends who paid that much for an emory education for their children.
They have gone onto medical schools like 95% of other medical school students who don’t go through a combined program.
Hey guys- Lurking in the background till now. REJECTED in CASE PPSP ACCEPTED in CASE undergrad , Neomed and Yale. Yale bound!!! Congrats and Good luck guys! Thanks for all your help!!
Texaspg
I actually feel your statement forgets one fact. This BU SMED is a med school admission while std four years does not have one.
While I know most of candidate are good test takers and !? Should do well…
My labs has six people trying to hard to get into medical school and I just interview a nice 2015 graduate of wash u with gpa 3.8 and old mcat 39 and no med school spot despite six interviews this past year
It is hard sometimes
Got into the Monmouth-Drexel Med Program, but the website says that it places an emphasis on family medicine, pediatrics, and general internal medicine. Is the program still for me if I choose to go into a different specialty?
Go see match list of the medical school and see what their success in high end fields
@texaspg and @bearchichi -
I so agree with bearchichi- It does depend on the comfort of the student who is ready to take the risk of another standardized test (MCAT), and demanding curriculum besides building the stellar resume again versus getting into med school through BS/ MD. Off course, that is if they have acquired the position.
I also have top UG students working for me who have almost everything going very well for them, but are still struggling to get into med school. The stress that they go through rebuilding the resume all over again and preparing for the MCAT almost does not seem worth giving up a guaranteed seat, even if they are the best test takers.
It is a difficult decision to balance money, guaranteed MD seat and a top tiered UG school which students have to make at a very young age (17-18 yrs). Although, I must say that some of these kids are so mature that they look years ahead while making this decision. I can definitely say this about my D for sure.
Good luck to all students and parents as you go through this difficult decision making process! I’m sure you will make the best decision eventually.
As a parent who forked over 260k for an undergrad over the last 4 years, I don’t forget facts. I know how hard I worked for it and how hard whoever is paying for first 3 years of BU SMED is if paying in full, granted it may be only for 3 years.
A guaranteed admission does not trump 200k or 260k of someone’s hard earned money if they are not getting any financial aid or scholarship.
I also don’t believe anyone who made it now won’t ever make it again just because they gave it up for a better opportunity. Every kid who I know who has given up a combined admission for a top undergrad program or scholarship has gone onto much higher ranked medical school over the past 9 years.
