For traditional 4+4 programs, does anyone know which programs have a history of allowing early matriculation to med school after 3 undergrad if all the requirements are fulfilled?
@PVNova@IfnousWHO@J2H239 Thank you so much for your feedback! Unfortunately, due to the high cost of REMS I do not think this program is feasible for me and my family. Also, I am from the Rochester area and sort of hate U of R’s campus and environment. I am still seriously considering the program though because of its prestige though. Of the other two, do you have any suggestions or insight. I am really struggling between all three schools, but I would like to at least narrow it down to REMS and one other program.
@wtchmeBSwtchmeMD what is the cost diff between RPI/AMC and SBU/GWU. Is it a significant amount to eliminate or almost same? It is good to look at the complete picture including finance than just looking at academic alone. GL
Found these just from Googling past match lists and just backtracking on the year. Both institutions seem to keep their match lists available to the public as PDFs for quite a long time.
@wtchmeBSwtchmeMD the alternatives to REMS are a significant step down, though I understand it would be tough for you to go there having the insights that you do. GWU is a decent medical school, but you’re spending 4 years at a very very mediocre undergrad (imo), while RPI saves you a bit of time and gets you to a quality undergrad but you’re very likely selling yourself short on medical school quality. If you were hesitant about REMS I would almost go the normal undergrad route (at a financially feasible option)
@Roentgen Thank you for the links. I think the 3/4 program goes through a match process. Students and med schools both provide the inputs and then they do the match (similar to residency match). But not sure of the details… I am also trying to learn more about this program.
@houstontxdad - are you making a choice in terms of choosing this program vs something else? I believe those who were selected are already notified right?
Congratulations to all the students and parents for your hard work and successes!
If you can all spend a little bit extra time, could you please post your stats and results to the 2016 result thread?
@houstontxdad - The program is only about 3 years old and if I am not mistaken, their first batch goes to med school this year. The things you should ask about:
When does the kid get assigned to one of the medical schools (is yours already assigned?)
Did everyone who is part of the program in their first batch meet the GPA and MCAT requirements?
They have pretty rigid requirements to meet each semester (15 or 18 credit hours) - did everyone meet them?
Did they meet the MCAT requirement?
I don’t know if Dr. Bott is still responsible for this program but he is quite honest in answering questions.
@HoustonTxDad Here is my D’s understanding as told by Dr. Bott during interview day.
At end of second year, students will have some interview with both school and each school will pick their top 5. Also student will rank their 2 choices of UTH vs UTMB and school preference will prevail than student when their is a tie or whatever. But as you know at this stage you are guaranteed for a MD seat (of course you need to meet what ever UG GPA and MCAT etc). Not to worry about the interview at the end of second year that is more for school to firm up which 5 students they would like to select.
From your CC name, I assume you are from Tx and you know more about Houston than what we can say. This program is very good especially when you are Tx with in state bottom rock fees. Though US News did not rank UTMB, as @narkor and @dblazer mentioned it is one of the finest teaching school and there is nothing to be of concern whether it is UTH or UTMB. UTH has its own pros and cons of big city and UTMB has its own pros and cons of outside of big city.
I have huge respect and like Dr. Bott so much as a parent for his candid, outspoken nature and integrity. He is passionate to make this program so successful.
The only unique point is (individual can differ whether it is good or bad from their own perspective) all 10 students are cohorts and will study the same set of courses which are mandatory for this HBS program and these courses ensure that you are fully covered for your MCAT and meet pre-med reqs. So no AP credit for these courses.
