***Official Thread for BSMD Applicants 2018***

Official Hofstra Numbers:

600 Applicants

60 Interviewed

25 Accepted

5 Waitlisted

Absolutely crazy… I just talked to my admissions counselor about the stats, and he told me they received a record breaking number of applicants this year, which is why they implemented a waitlist for the first time ever.

Hello everyone. I’m new to this forum. I am female and Asian from Ohio and here is the current status to my bs/md journey.

Acceptances: HPME (even got a handwritten letter mailed to me from the HPME Program director), PLME, Case PPSP, REMS, BU Smed. RPI/AMC

Rejections: Penn State, Pitt GAP, and GW

@potterMan
Points to consider:

Time: 6 yr vs 8 yrs.

Total cost of education

Undergrad experience: From what I have heard from NY folks, Hofstra’s undergrad is very easy and does not stress kids. My friend discouraged us from applying to Hofstra for this specific reason.
Plus it requires MCAT in one attempt with a score of around 512. That can be difficult if one gets used to the easy college environment.

Your son’s feel for either college.
We did not got visit UMKC but have visited Hofstra. My daughter was not enthusiastic about Hofstra after the visit.

@bluelily44
Congratulations!!!
You have many fabulous options.
Where are leaning towards?

@novicedad @potterMan Hofstra requires MCAT score in the 80th percentile, which I believe is 509. 512 would be much more difficult.

@potterMan

I would prefer UMKC over Hofstra…my cousin went to UMKC many years ago and most of his classmates loved their experience there and did well. UMKC’s campus is really fun and close to the plaza area.

Hofstra is 8 years and is a newer program. The MCAT requirement I hear far outweighs how the UG years prep students receive…and many don’t love the campus.

@Novice Dad

I have absolutely no idea. Honestly I’m just surprised at the decisions and cried with joy for at least two hours.

I am trying to decide between HPME and PLME as of right now. Please let me know everyone of your opinions as to what I should do.

@bluelily44

Congrats! Clean sweep!

I would personally love Brown PLME…Ivy education and hear the UG years are relaxed and the UG education is diverse. Second best for me would NU HPME…oldest program and so you cannot go wrong there.

@bluelily44 how did you already get into ppsp, I thought decisions only come out april 13th. Congrats on everything!

@potterMan. Umkc will be my choice. Even if you are out of state for UMKC it will still cost about the same as Hofstra because of shorter duration. Also 6 years program is better for good students otherwise they get bored or distracted. My DD went through one a few years back and the undergrad was a breeze for her.

@bluelily44. Congratulations for acceptances to So many great programs. Brown PLME will be my first choice. It is a great school and in my view the best BS/MD program. Really geared towards intellectual curiosity instead of rote memorization. Very flexible in terms of coursework and even timeframe for completion.

@bluelily44
Congratulations on multiple bsmd admissions!! When did you receive PPSP notification? My S attended PPSP interview last week and they said results would come out in the first week of April.

OMG I made a typo. I meant to say Case yes PPSP no. :frowning: @Shine 27, do you know which medical school is better

does any one know if Ucinn’s alternate list is the same as waitlist for other colleges?

@bluelily44
I would choose HPME over PLME.
Feinberg is a much better medical school than Alpert. Residency match to many specialists is better for Feinberg. Not to mention their simulation lab.
You also save 1 year.
Alternatively you can use that year to do what you want while retaining your medical seat.
NW undergrad is one of the finest in the country and you can pretty much major in any field.
Plus no MCAT:
Plus Chicago beats RH for college kids.

@potterMan what was your son’s stats? and congrats on umkc and the other acceptions!

@PPofEngrDr what were your stats…?

@gallentjill
I stand corrected.
Just checked the website- you are correct about MCAT requirement of 80th percentile.

People ! Help - any suggestions for BU vs UMKC ?? Super confused

@bsmdream no brainer here BU vs UMKC. BU is a top 30 med school.

@Shine27 and @NoviceDad thanks for the input. He is leaning towards UMKC too. But earlier year blogs seem to indicate their second year 24 credit Human structures course is a weeder and almost 15% students drop out. My son is OOS. And the UMKC undergrad does not contain the courses required for a regular MD (MCAT) program in case one drops out. They cant really use the undergrad for a MD application to a different school. Additionally the 6 yr continuous all summer program could be stressful. These are the concerns.
