***Official Thread for BSMD Applicants 2018***

@sophie10000

Between CNU BSMD and Lecom BSDO, I have the following comments:

  1. CNU is a new school, whether it will survive the recent problems is still up in the air. The more immediate question is their BS program. The options for the students in the program are limited, it is not like RPI/AMC that you have other UG options if medicine does not work out.
  2. Am not sure what they offer in Lecom BSDO, I think the UG choices are limited as well. Lecom at least has a respectable long run DO school. If you did well, you may applied out after UG.

@sophie10000

Are you referring to Adelphi, Gannon, FGCU or SBU/Lecom programs?
And do you have any other choices, combined programs or regular UG admission.

For the NJMS program, should we expect something to arrive by mail?

The doctor who delivered the phone call to me just said we would get something in the email by this Friday.

Congrats! Did you guys apply through just NJIT or NJIT and another undergrad institution?

@hamzah25 I applied through another undergrad institution.
I believe there are a couple of different ways to apply, however (NJIT, Rutgers, Caldwell, Drew, TCNJ, Stevens etcā€¦)

@sophie10000. As others have mentioned before Cal Northgate is a new medical school. They do require MCAT score of 510 and an undergraduate 3.5 GPA. As I understand they do not offer any financial aid or even consider FAFSA. It also is very expensive. On the other hand LECOM is a well established medical school. It puts a lot of emphasis on board exams resulting in students scoring well on Comlex as well as USMLE. A lot of their students do take USMLE. Their students get good residency matches actually much better than low tier MD schools. If you are not hung up on initials after your name (MD vs DO) that is the way to go. LECOM also has BS/DO program with more than 50 colleges and are adding more every year. If I understand it correctly, they even have stated that if the college you want to go to is not on the list you can tell them and they will work to get it on. They do not require another interview or MCAT after undergraduate. Also they have a pretty reasonable expectation in terms of GPA (3.4). That is pretty far any guarantee can go. They are also low cost in terms of tuition. If it was me, I will choose LECOM.

@BSMDDAD and others knowledgeable about DO programs,

My understanding is that the difference between MD and DO is shrinking at residency placements level. And there are some well known institutions like Michigan State also offering the DO programs. Will be great if you can throw further light on such matters. But they are as expensive as MD programs though. Couple of Dā€™s high school batch mates went for direct DO programs in Nova South Eastern and NYIT.

@MMBoss2 @bsmdmom here is some data on med school applicants from Penn undergrad I got from a friend thatā€™s several years old but still relevant I think: https://ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– /mCx26c. As you can see ~76% of people who apply are admitted (which doesnā€™t include the individuals who were ā€˜weeded outā€™ by the coursework early on).

The BS/MD route obviously offers security in the case of Stony Brook and RPI/AMC, but it does come at the cost of potentially ā€˜settlingā€™ on a medical school that does not necessarily have the same level of research, mentorship/connections, and academic reputation as top tier schools, which affects placement into top residency programs (getting a top residency is more important for individuals considering a career that involves research). Most people here would tell you to go with the sure thing, but itā€™s not necessarily a clear-cut right choice.

@dblazer,

76% is rather a vague and generic figure. (like 96%@Princeton after weeding out, suppressing true figures and what not). Any statistics available as to how many from within the so called 76% actually made it to ā€œtop residency programsā€ ? (I am yet to study it in detail).

I am asking this bcoz I either know directly or heard from others who knew directly, people who went to Cornell, JHU and MIT ended up in programs no where comparable to where they had studied.

@rk2017. It is true that the difference between DO and MD is shrinking by day. California actually converted all DOs to MDs a while back but now they again have three DO schools. AMA has been trying for years to confer every doctor a MD degree but it is Osteopathic association (AOA) that wants to stay separate. In my view Osteopathy should be a specialization in MD. From 2020 all residencies for MD and DO will be merged into one program. After that the difference between MD and DO will only be a semantics. If foreign medical graduates like MBBS who do residency in US are allowed (in some states required) to use MD after their names, how will anybody be able to stop a DO from using MD after their names when they all will go though the same residency programs. DO are already allowed to take USMLE and do allopathic residencies. DO curriculum is already identical to MD curriculum except that they do additional study in OMT. There are several reputed universities that now offer DO programs, for example Michigan State, Ohio University, PCOM, etc.

Accepted at Stony Brook BSMD!! Anyone else plan on attending?

So cal NorthState offers no financial aid at all! How do people afford that!

CNU is designed for rich students with full pay. It is a for profit organization, the first US mainland MD school like that, therefore, no aids.

For those contemplating on the traditional route to medical school- here is a table ( I created manually last year for my DD ) with avg old MCAT and avg UG GPA, LizzyM score = LizzyM score is defined as (GPA*10)+MCAT and may contain a +1 or -1 modifier in certain situations, and new Equivalent MCAT(approximation)

@sxw310 Iā€™m planning to attend SBU Scholars for Medicine! Iā€™ll be making a FB group for SfM soon, are you interested in joining?

@rebel18 I am interested in joining the FB group as well.

My DD got in to Texas Tech UMSI. Admissions officer called us to notify as well along with an email

@grtd2010 getting into BU is getting increasingly difficult https://www.bumc.bu.edu/busm/admissions/introduction-to-busm/class-profile/

Boston University, Boston, MA 2017 incoming class stats
The 126 4-year MD students were selected from a pool of over 10,000 individuals who submitted initial applications to BUSM. On the academic side, this is one of the best qualified classes we have ever had. The mean undergraduate GPA in this group was 3.71 and the mean MCAT was 516 (94%).

The 173 students in the entering class of 2017 are drawn from the following subgroups:
126 Four-Year MD
5 MD-PhD
10Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP)
23 Seven-Year BA-MD Program
9 Modular Medical Integrated Curriculum (MMEDIC)

Hey! My name is Amanda Schorr, and Iā€™m almost positive Iā€™m attending the BS/MD program at Hofstra. Whatā€™s your name? Are you planning on going? @lebaggies
