hey, anybody wanna help a one-year transfer out?
i’m taking 15 units this semester and let’s say i get a’s in all of them. good, right? but i took this 5 unit chem class the summer after my sophomore year in high school and got a c, and now it’s stuck on my transcript. am i doomed regarding my chances for cal? death by gpa? is there any way i can remedy this (i.e. addressing it in my personal statement)?
also, can i include extra curriculars from high school? i have a billion music ones because i want to an art school. obviously, i don’t have too many from my one year of college because i just started, but i do have a job teaching piano to groups of little kids and private lessons.
fanx for your help.

If you do 1 year transfer, is that mean you can graduate with a degree in 3 years from college?

^Yes.

10char.

So… I am a High school Senior. I am interested in 1 year transfer, too. But i have a lot of question:

1) Does CCC give you a letter grade or passing grade for your AP test? (cause i saw some some about i cannot have more then 14 unit in passing grade as a transfer student)
2) Also, do i need a 3/4/5 for getting college unit from AP test?
3) So, i know the deadline for summit a transfer application is on Nov 30. How can I know am I eligible to apply as transfer?
4) Do I still need to take SAT/ACT, joining club, and volunteering?
5) I took some college transferable class while I was attending high school, do those Unit count in that 60 units?

Thank you very much!

For nyc_dream1, I would like to do 1 year transfer. But how do you attend 3 different college?

@GeorgeLTam

I take most of my units at College 1 in my city in California. I register at College 2 for weekend classes. I register at College 3 for some of my afternoon classes as well as winter intersession.

I guess it depends on where you live. But in California, you normally can concurrently register to as many community colleges as you want. You just need to plan accordingly for commute time.
Also I attend 3 colleges because my main College 1 has a unit cap of 25 units per semester so if I want to take more, I have to go somewhere else. There is also some interesting and transferable classes offered at College 2 & 3 that weren’t offered at my College 1.

I took exactly 60 units from summer to spring. Believe me, you would go a little crazy ! I still can’t believe I did it. Unless you have some special circumstances (family&financial for me), don’t do it. Take it slow. It’s better. But if you must do everything in 1 year…know that it’s doable. Screw all the counselors and people that say No to you !

Good Luck !

@GeorgeLTam

To answer your questions
- Does CCC give you a letter grade or passing grade for your AP test? (cause i saw some some about i cannot have more then 14 unit in passing grade as a transfer student)

Passing grade and credits.

2) Also, do i need a 3/4/5 for getting college unit from AP test?

For community colleges, 3 is acceptable but the university you transfer to may not accept it. So cross check with the university you would transfer to. Usually only 4 or 5 would be accepted.

3) So, i know the deadline for summit a transfer application is on Nov 30. How can I know am I eligible to apply as transfer?

You look at the requirement checklist. For example, would you complete 60 units by the time you transfer (Spring) ? Do you satisfy general education requirement ? Foreign language? Major pre-req ?
When I applied to UCs, I had 7 units but I know by end of Spring I would have 60 units. So if you can stick to your plan, just apply !

4) Do I still need to take SAT/ACT, joining club, and volunteering?

Throw your SAT/ACT out ! They don’t mean anything even if you have a perfect score. UC’s don’t care how perfect/genius you are as a high school student. They only want to know your grades and activities at your community college.
Clubs and volunteer still matter. Not as much. But you still need some activities or a job.

5) I took some college transferable class while I was attending high school, do those Unit count in that 60 units?

Yes. They should all count. But be careful though, some community colleges have a maximum cap of how many transferable units you can take in high school that would still count.

Check all what I have written with your specific college. Each community college is different.

Again Good Luck

Hey guys! I’m also trying to become a one year transfer but im a bit confused. I only applied to UCI because that was the only school i was interested in that would accept summer courses prior to enrollment.
major: first choice- business admin
second choice- econ
igetcy will be completed by summer 2011
all courses are transferrable
Summer 09- Poly sci B1: B
- Micro Econ: B
Summer 10- Macro econ: A
Fall 10- Calc 1: B
- Eng b1a: B
- US history: A
- Financial acc: A
- Art appreciation: A

Spring 11- in progress:
- Calc 2
- Managerial acc.
- second english composition class
- Sociology
- African American History
- Biology+Lab
- Music appreciation
- Stats
Summer 11- planned
- public speaking
- geology.
I currently have 27 units complete and taking 29 units this semester and plan on taking 6 units over the summer. I feel like my chances are kind of slim because UCI will get to see 27 units of mine and its business admin but maybe i have a good chance for econ? Also if I really good this semester i can probably appeal and try to get in if i get rejected because i would have 29 more units to show. What do you guys think what are my chances?

Hey everyone!
I’m a first year student at SMC, it wasn’t my first choice but I’ve made due so I’m hoping to transfer in a year. Since I took several concurrent SMC classes while in highschool, I’ll finish my second semester with 33 units.Unfortunately, I had a few health problems during my fall semester so my current GPA is a 3.3 (which is subject to change). I’m retaking the class I struggled with so I know that my GPA will increase. However I will have fulfilled my IGETC by the end of this year so I think that’s good? In regard to those of you who have transferred, did you guys participate in alot of extracurricular activities (work, clubs, etc…)? Now that my health problems are over, I’m planning to tackle all of that head on but do you think it’ll look weird to colleges since I’m just starting now? Also, were the classes you took related to your major or were they GED/IGETC? I’m just worried because although my classes fulfill IGETC, they’re not exactly all focused on a particular major.

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I was wondering how do you petition to exceed max amount of units straight out of high school. I am planning on doing this by attending SBCC and transfering to UCSB for Econ Department. Also what is winter intersesion (usual max on that) and saturday classes. How do you check if classes are transferable (call school, ?)? Also what is best way to choose course (for summer, fall, spring, etc.)

So for one year transfers, the only semester the UC admission committee will be able to review is Fall’s? Fall semester ends in the December at my community college. Since the application is due before Nov. 30, do I just go back to my application later and update the grades that I got for my fall semester classes?

Hey all,
I also ended up at CC after struggling my senior year. Luckily though, my AP credits have afforded me with the opportunity of transferring within a year. I have 31.9 units of AP semester credits (AH, Chem, Lang, USH, World, Gov, and Calc AB). My intended major is applied mathematics and I am hopeful that I can transfer to Cal. However, in being a math major, I would need to take Calc 3, LA, DE, and Bio in one semester. Is transferring within a year seem possible (or advantageous), or should I simply go the two-year route? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Another question, are the grades more important than extracurricular activities for one year transfers? Trying to get 60 units done in one year gives little, if not any, time to do extracurricular activities/volunteer work.

To ayymeer:
When I applied to UC’s in November, there were only 7 (YES 7) units on my transcripts. I still got in my choice of UC.
The reason is you apply in November but they won’t evaluate transfer applications until January, when you update your Fall grades.

GRADES = The most important thing when you apply as transfer
If you have a super high GPA and do all of the units in just one year, you are almost guarantee admission. They understand that you are not superhuman. High grades for 60 units in one year show that you can excel at UC level.

Good Luck !

Happily at UC

Thanks nyc_dream1!

So we don’t have to have our IGETC completed or our prereqs right? Also, anyone know if we should retake our SAT/ACT scores? I’m pretty sure one of the reasons I didn’t get in was because of my low scores.

Hello all,

I just want to say congrats to all the UC tranfers who did it in a year, especially those who did not have AP classes to fall back on. I’m taking 23 units this Fall I took three physical science classes in the summer got two A’s and one B, it was a lot of work. I did the math and I’ll be in school 19 hours a week til December as opposed to 28 hours a week in the summer. So I think if I was able to get above a 3.5 in the summer with more hours per week I hope and pray I can do the same for fall! A 4.0 would be better though:) My goal is to get into Cal and major in Sociology, Spring I should be done with my IGETC’s. Congrats again to everybody you guys really inspired me, especially the guy who took 25 units at three different schools crazy!

Hey guys, did you put on your application that you were a one year transfer?

Hi it’s really impressive and encouraging to see you guys all got in.

I’m currently study at Berkeley City College, they dont have winter session, none of the peralta colleges does.Would you recommend any college for winter? I don’t mind how far it is I will just stay there for that time, could you give me more choices so I can look the schedule to decide one?

Also,at my college the counselor said that I have to ask the dean to give me permission to take 25 units.Or I could only take 17 now.So how did you all tell them abt taking MAX units Courses?

Thanks!!!
