Is attempting to complete 60 semester credits in one year suicide?

Assuming I can get 3's, 4's, or 5's on all of my 7 AP exams (which should help to knock out IGETC requirements), is it possible to transfer to UCLA after just one year at the junior level as a Pre-Economics major?

it’s been done before

So it is possible. Has anyone here personally attempted this? I would appreciate some insight into the situation.

for your first semester of college taking 30 credits is beyond insane. Is this what you are planning to do?

if u get credit for all ur APs, then u should get 21 units. so u’ll only have about 40 left and u can take 20 per semester. i’m taking 24 right now and its pretty easy. so if u dont get credit for all ur APs u should still be able to finish in one year if u take 23-26 per semester, and u can also take summer/winter (only some CCs will have them b/c of budget cuts)

my friend took 25 units/semester for two consecutive semesters and 12 units the following summer. she accomplished this by enrolling in 2 different CC’s to get all of the classes needed and in a timely manner. she also maintained close to 4.0 GPA and transferred to Cal…can only be explained by her freakishly exceptional time management skills and relentless determination.

lakerforever what classess are you taking for your 24 credits?

SeeHerFly, that’s incredible! This gives me hope. Thanks for all the responses.

take summer school too

@ccillinois i’m taking pretty easy courses right now. i’m trying to finish haas/berkeley requrements, USC general ed, and IGETC in 2 yrs.

Intro to International Relations
Honors Analysis of Social Problems
Honors General Geology
Honors Art History- Prehistoric Gothic Art
Oceanography
Freshman Composition
British Literature after 1800
Ethics

i study maybe .5-1 hour a day. but i have midterms starting next wk so ima have to start studying tomorrow. current GPA is 4.0

oh dude, i’m living it right now haha
I took 2 ap’s in high school and 4 classes at my ccc during high school so i started this year with 20 units. I’m taking 14 units this semester, 10 in the winter, and 18 in the spring, so i’ll have more than 60 units done…

I’m kind of in the same postition, but I only need about ten more units (and I’m working on 12 this semester) to transfer to Marshall @ USC. I passed 5 AP tests this last spring, so it brought me 18.4 UC credits and 20 USC credits. Let’s hope I get accepted as an incoming sophomore!

Those 4 CCC classes you took while attending high school don’t count toward satisfying the 60 semester hour requirement. It says in the UC website that classes you took during highschool and the summer immediately after graduating don’t go towards transfer credit.

Edmfanatiq, I’ve taken CCC classes during high school, and I’ve never heard anything about those not being counted for transfer credit. I know that for USC, certain classes don’t count for transfer credit, but I’ve never heard anything about the UC’s having that same restriction. Where exactly on the website did you see that information listed?

[University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/transfer/tr_adm_reqs.html)
first line of the page.

"Minimum Admission Requirements for Transfer Students

The University considers you a transfer applicant if you enrolled in a regular session at another college or university, except while in high school or summer session immediately following high school. (You can’t disregard your college record and apply as a freshman.)"

It also says:
No more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units may be taken Pass/Not Pass.

I think that means you can only claim 4 AP course credits not 7.

Never mind, I found it:

[University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/transfer/tr_adm_reqs.html)

“The University considers you a transfer applicant if you enrolled in a regular session at another college or university, except while in high school or summer session immediately following high school. (You can’t disregard your college record and apply as a freshman.)”

However, I think this only means that students can’t take all 60 units before graduating high school and then expect to transfer right after their high school graduation. I started taking classes while I was enrolled in high school just for fun. I thought I was going to get in to UCLA as a freshman, but I didn’t. So, I decided to transfer. Even though I took 20 units of classes at the CCC while in high school (Japanese classes are 5 units each, and I took 4 of them), I still spent two full years at a CCC after high school gradution, where I did all of my GE’s. So I hope I should be OK…

Thank you for the information.

By the way, I’m not claiming AP course credit. And I haven’t taken any classes pass/no pass. It’s frustrating because even though I took college classes while I was in high school, I’ve still spent 2 years at a CCC just like any other transfer student.

What am I supposed to do then if I can’t transfer the 20 units of courses which I took at the CCC level while I was in high school (which were my major pre-reqs)? I feel like I’m at a dead end.

EDIT:

Please correct me if I’m wrong. It looks like this is all intended for students who try to ‘transfer’ right out of high school. Meaning, they take many classes at a CCC while being enrolled in high school and then try to transfer out right after graduation because it is ‘easier’ than applying as a freshman. Perhaps the UC intended this policy to be for those students.

What about students like me, who took a certain amount of units at the CCC level before high school graduation, but then continued to attend a CCC for 2 full years and are now attempting to transfer as juniors with 60+ units?

I’ve taken a total of 28 semester hours in both high school and the summer following hs graduation. I talked to a UC admissions officer and said those units are ineffective. I also had 3 AP credits which would have put me way past the requirements. Additionally, the courses you take in high school usually don’t satisfy the pre requisites for your major you apply as. I figured that the only way to transfer in 1 year is to have 3-4 AP credits and enroll in 25 semester hours for two semesters which is brutal.

Edmfanatiq, I understand what you’re saying, but I’m not trying to apply or transfer in 1 year. My position is that I’ve taken 20+ semester units at a CCC before graduating high school. I was taking the classes for fun. When I didn’t get in as a freshman, I changed my mind and decided to continue at the CCC, spending the 2 full years there and taking 30+ units. Now, time has come to apply. Are the units I earned before high school graduation at the CC now going to become null and void? So, if I have say 60 units total, and 25 units taken before high school graduation, those 25 units will be subtracted and thus bump me down to 35 units?

By the way, just to clarify, I do not have any AP credits that I’m using. All the credits I have before high school graduation were CCC courses taken at the CCC that show up on my transcript. (Japanese 1, 2, 3, 4, Spanish 1, History 11, and English 101.) These were taken over a period of 3 years while I was still attending high school. The rest of my IGETC/GE courses were taken after high school graduation, after I decided I would be transferring.

If certain courses become null and void, that’ll bump me down to less than 40 units. Should I even attempt to apply now? If I’m going to be automatically disqualified because I took CCC classes during high school, it would be a shame, especially since I spent 2 years at a CCC after graduating high school. It’s like I’m in front of a brick wall now. If we’re spending 2 full years at a CCC anyway, why are we getting punished for the CCC courses we took before high school graduation?

Back on topic :)

If I decided to transfer after one year at junior level standing, would UCLA place more weight on my High School record when determining my acceptance?
