UC One-Year Transfers Fall 2021

Hi all!

I haven’t seen a thread for one-year transfers for Fall 2021 to UCs, and I know I really find last year’s thread super informational. I want to open up this threat to all my people applying to UC after one-year in their respective college. I’ll also model the way to put your stats below if you choose to and lets leave some helpful information for each other and those who decide this path next year!

Intended Major : Political Science
State: In-State (California)
AP Credit: a lot, not sure how many units.
] School Type: CC
[
] GPA: 4.0
[
] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Low Income
[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): One-year transfer, Honor Student Dean List (but I did not mention this as an extra curricular, I assumed all As would’ve shown it anyways)

Extracurriculars: Precinct Captain at ACLU, Exec VP at my Student Gov, work a lot of hours at a job. I mentioned some of my high school stats but not all of it, although wishing I did though because I did a ton in HS.

Job/Work Experience: 25 -30 hrs a week at work

Strengths: I feel like my ECs, especially given that I have only been there for one year. Additionally, my PIQs were pretty good but I wrote them later (they sound more authentic in my opinion than usual). I have all the prereqs done and my GPA.EC’s, I drafted my PIQ’s early and had them read over by some UCB transfer students and my Scholarship Coordinator
Weaknesses: Not TAP certified (my school didn’t have it), not going into detail about my high school stats, wrote my PIQs a lil late?
Applying to what schools? UCI (tag), UCLA, and UCSD

Intended major: Math/Econ
State: CA
Current School: UC Santa Barbara
Schools applied: only UCLA
AP Credit: 44 quarter units
Overall GPA: 3.88
Major GPA: 4.00*
Gender: Male
Income bracket: Upper middle

*Sadly, I lost this with an A- in Linear Algebra in Winter 2021, but I put it as 4.00 because that grade does not factor into the GPA used for admissions. If it was factored in, my major GPA would be 3.92, which is still good.

Extracurriculars: Part-time accounting job, summer sales job, Model UN in high school, including a fundraising competition I led where I drastically raised turnout over previous years. Overall, I did far more in high school EC-wise.

Essays: I think I did very well with this. I was clear and provided concrete examples of my leadership experience, along with why UCLA would be a better campus for me. I talked about the campus environment, my major, and the ECs at UCLA. I also had a current UCLA student read them, and she gave them high marks.

Strengths: Strong essays, good GPA, and I will have my GEs done at UCSB.

Weaknesses: Lack of ECs from UCSB, and one B+ in my first of 2 writing classes wrecked my GPA. Fortunately, I got an A in the second one so I hope they see it.

Intended Major : Environmental Science
State: In-State (California)
AP Credit: I believe 16 units
Tests:
APUSH
AP Calc AB
AP Lit
AP Gov & Politics

] School Type: CCC
[] GPA: 4.0
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Just above middle bracket
[] Hooks: One-year transfer, Honor Student, I did not mention on my app Dean List I hopefully hoped that it would speak for itself.

Extracurriculars: Had a job before COVID, and volunteered at the local food bank.

Job/Work Experience: 40 Hours a week before covid.

Strengths: I was hoping the one year transfer would not hinder my chances so I think my strengths would just be my grades and taking the honors system at my school.
Weaknesses: Missing some recommended courses.
Applying to what schools? UCSB (TAG-kinda), UCI, UCLA, UCSD

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

State (if domestic applicant): In-State
School Type: Fullerton College (CC)
Income Bracket: Middle class

Strengths: Have a lot of ECs and awards, second time applying to UC, more experienced. IGETCS and major pre-reqs all done before Fall 2020.

Weaknesses:

I think my gpa for my major is too low, (for econ gpa range is 3.83-4.0) it is tooooo competitive. Since I am a one-year transfer most of my transfer Units come from the APs I took in HS (about 32 units), and due to the short time period I have until transfer, I really don’t have time to take many classes to build up my GPA. In fact, I only have one B on my transcript but the total classes I took are not enough to sort of average it out ughhhh.

I didn’t get TAP certified because I literally don’t have enough time to complete the honor’s program.

Also due to the pandemic, I don’t really have any cc college experience to talk about…

I head that we have double the amount of transfer applicants this year compared to last year so… fingers crossed

Schools Applied: UCLA,UCB,UCSD,UCI(TAG&accepted)

BEST OF LUCK for all of you one-year transfers!!! Last year was really a mess and we tried our best to survive, now we are almost there, we deserve what we put in! No matter what the outcome is, I am so proud of ALL OF YOU!!

Tip: for AP or other exam credit, you can see what they count for at AP & Exam credits | UC Admissions . For AP scores, you can check specific campus subject credit as well. For UCB L&S majors, each major can choose its own subject credit policy, so you need to go to the major’s web site to check what subject credit your AP scores can give.

Note the policy against giving credit for both an AP (or other) score and college course that cover the same material.

gl for all one year transfers, we really did an incredible job in this pandemic yr

period!! to anyone reading this in the future looking to see if you want to do this, I’d definitely recommend checking everything a bunch of times. Be ready to max out on units each semester and work really hard. Something I wish someone told me so far is talking to the transfer center at my school, but also watching videos and reading past threads on UC transferring in one year for help! Additionally, it is way harder to transfer in one year for some majors than others, look that stuff up on Assist.org !

Thank you! Regardless of our decisions, we really worked hard!

My son tried this and was waitlisted to his tag school ucsb because they said while he had the 60 units & gpa, he didn’t have 30 of them b4 Sept 30 application date. Um, yea cause he had only graduated high school a few months prior. UC Irvine did let him straight in for non-tag. Denied at CAL waiting on UCLA & USC.

By using AP courses, taking CC classes in hs and using the summer session before, it makes getting 30 quite easy.

I’m a one year and tagged UCSB and got in

Ahh interesting. I earned 44 units straight out of high school so hopefully that won’t be a problem. Best of luck to him for UCLA and USC though!

I think as others have replied, you need to use the AP to UC units sheet that changes every year to calculate the amount of UC units you have prior to application. Although you might have had them at your sons CC, it may have not equaled 30 in UCSB units.

we had no ap units. My high school daughter who had less stress in maxing out 16 college units during Highschool including 1 at USC where she got a letter of Rec but got in nowhere, will go full-time this summer to have 30 then enjoy the UC Isla Vista experience like her brother did at SBCC. He was able to even join a fraternity DTD.
