Hi! I'm wondering if there are/have been any one-year community college applicants/transfers in this forum? (I graduated HS in 2013, applied for transfer in Fall 2014) I'm not sure as to if there are any diminished admission chances due to the fact that it hasn't even been a full semester since I've applied.

I'm just wondering what your opinions are on successfully transferring within one year. Opinions can be from anyone!

IGETC will be completed this upcoming Spring, and 2/4 Pre-Major reqs completed in Fall and 3/4 completed Spring since 4th is not offered at any nearby CC's. Total about 74 semester units by the end of Spring.

Applied to UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD, and UCD with a current GPA of 3.8 majoring in Anthropology at all schools.

Unless I am mistake AP credits can’t be used as transfer units. So it’s borderline impossibe for a 1 yr transfer. 19 units (fall) + 19 units (spring) + 6 units summer + 6 units winter = 50. 60 in the min required.

Yeah, I made sure that AP credits would be transferrable before deciding to go to CC’s instead my other options! UCLA is definitely my top choice!

EDIT: Also, since the last major pre-req course is not offered by an CC’s nearby (I registered to 6 CC’s, none of them offered the course), how will this affect my chances since it is literally impossible for me to have completed that last course?

If your JC doesn’t offer it, you have nothing to worry about. You’ve done 2/4 so far and are completing the 3rd this semester, correct? Normally this wouldn’t be ideal but Anthro is likely the easiest major to get into so I doubt it’s going to be a problem.

I think you’ll be fine. I’m sure others will chime in later about the AP units! I personally didn’t take AP units and I’ve got no idea how it works! Nice to see more Anthro majors on here! Hopefully we both get into Cal!

To clarify. I know AP exams can get converted into units but I don’t believe AP exams/units are included as part of the 60 required for transfer.

This is really interesting. I don’t want to believe what bomerr is saying because that’d suck for OP but it would make sense. I mean, why would anyone apply for Frosh admissions if they can just use all their AP units?!

I had a lengthy talk with a counselor that works in UCLA Undergarduate Admissions and she told me they would count… but now I’m kind of nervous! Time to do some sleuthing.

Yes Snorlaz hopefully we both get into Cal! Though my end goal is to shoot for Med School, Anthropology is still a very interesting subject!

Don’t freak out OP! If your counselor works in the UCLA UG admissions, she likely knows what’s going on. Consider yourself lucky because most counselors suck!

Let’s wait for some current UC transfer students that used AP credits to chime in.

AP units do count towards the 60 units… what may not count is credit stating that you took the course if you didn’t get a high enough score. For example, your CC might say that you’re placed out of calc 1 if you got a 4 or 5 on the AP exam but not if you only got a 3.

Sup I made an account just for this as I am also a one-year community college transfer (I graduated HS in 2013 and just applied for transfer in Fall 2014).

As far as diminished returns go, my counselor stated that there shouldn’t be too much of an issue as long as my grades for my summer and fall quarter were consistent with what I needed for my major at UCLA/Cal. However, when I talked to reps from both schools no one really gave me a firm answer so I’m kind of nervous.

No IGETC unfortunately but I will be completed with all of my major reqs by the end of spring and I will be UCLA TAP certified through my Honors Program.

Total Units by end of spring will be about ~70 quarter units by end of spring from classes and the rest (36 I think not too sure) from AP tests

Applied to UCLA, Cal, and UCSD with a current GPA of 3.6 majoring in Astrophysics at all schools.

There is even more good news for transferring this way. Once you are at a UC you can for the most part ignore all that AP credit if you want! If they’ve given you credit for a specific class then you can’t take the same one over at UC, but other than that it’s as if you are a sophomore transfer.

I should add, though, that the “act like a sophomore” may not always work out. There are some majors that transfers cannot change into if they were not accepted into them as an incoming transfer student. I don’t know how they resolve the apparent contradiction between that rule and the one I noted in post #16.
