My son is waitlisted:
Mechanical Engineering
UW GPA 4.0, UC GPA 4.3
SAT 1460
In-state competitive public high school
Also waitlisted at Cal Poly SLO, admitted to UIUC, CU Boulder, UW
The only piece missing is the # by major, but overall gives a better sense of how this works even though it’s a year old. The numbers are similar for the previous year 2015-16.
I interpret this as good news IF the process and numbers are similar compared to previous years!
Waitlisted
Major: Biological Sciences
SAT: 1540
Unweighted GPA: 3.89
Weighted GPA: 4.38
Essays: I worked really hard on them and got them checked by many people, so I’d like to say they were really good.
EC: ASB for 3 years, dance for all of high school, piano, 500+ hours of service, secretary of Free the Children service club for 1 year, Student Affairs Board for senior year, and track and field for 3 years.
Female, South Asian
I’m really sad because this was my #1 school (I want to be a vet, but I chose biological sciences as my major just in case I didn’t feel like becoming a vet anymore, as I still want to be in biology). I thought I’d get in to this school because of my stats and essays, and I was really sad to see some of my friends with lower stats get in and not even care about the school while I really wanted to get into this school and got waitlisted with my stats and essays. Hopefully this is a blessing in disguise? I’m accepting the waitlist offer, but I’m not sure how high it is my list of colleges now because of the new wait for the waitlist results (May 1 - June 30, too far away and I want to know where I’m going to end up by May 1). Good luck to all of you!
It is hard to be waitlisted. You’re not in, you’re not out. The school acknowledges “we offer a select group of qualified applicants” a waitlist spot. A positive is that you have been selected to receive an invitation because you are qualified.
A negative is that you still don’t know if you will get in and June is a long way off. Best advice is to evaluate all of your school options, make your decision, SIR to a school you really want to go to, buy the T-shirt, get excited and start to plan your future there. If you accept the waitlist offer, and IF you get in off the waitlist, then you can evaluate your options at that time. Only you and your family can decide if the emotional toll of not knowing until May or June and the financial toll of losing your deposit at another school are acceptable. You are all high achieving students and you will do well wherever you go!
@calcollegemom so agree. It’s hard to be mentally strong when May 1st comes and you don’t truly know where you will be. And you worked your butt off for 4 years sacrificing beyond what any teen should have to do to reach their goals.
This was posted to the UCSD thread about the UCD waitlist from UCSD admissions thread by @cutiepie679 :
my aunt is on the admissions board, and even I got waitlisted (1540 SAT and 4.38 GPA) at Davis, and when I asked her about it she said that they’re accepting people based off of the likelihood that they will attend the school.
This is super upsetting because this waitlister’s dream school is in fact UC Davis!!!
I already posted this in the UC Davis general forum but I figured I’d put it here too.

I will be accepting the waitlist, as Davis is my first choice.
Has anyone accepted the waitlist yet? I am wondering if you need to submit the essay right then or can you accept and then submit the essay at a later time.
im pretty it goes by class rank as im just finding out, I’ve heard of many of my classmates with average test scores and gpa getting in because they were ranked about top 20. Davis was not my first choice, but then again it’s like getting rejected by the ugly girl
My D was waitlisted at UCD too): So far she has been waitlisted at SCU, accepted at UCSC and Dominican. Waiting on UCLA, UCI, Pepperdine, and a school back east. Quite stressful ): ):
waitlisted
major: animal biology
uc gpa: 3.8
act: 28
pretty mediocre ECs (lol :c)
uhhh the scaling of essays seems kinda subjective but personally i think they’re pretty mediocre too(they’ve only been reviewed by a friends who are seniors/college freshmen)
after seeing others ppls stats i’m super surprised that i even got waitlisted with these poor stats haha
