@BayAreaMom15 Given your son’s stats, I have to say it’s at least a small consolation that my kid (1410 SAT, UC GPA 4.3, MechE major, instate, Bay area native) apparently wasn’t just below the cutoff. Unlike yours, there weren’t any OOS colleges applied to so other than potentially UCSD’s waitlist, the SIR is at Irvine. Bummers because daughter graduated from UCD under biochemE and the location and convenience was perfect. Personally I’m not a fan of SoCal.
@gopherwrabet Thanks for sharing your son’s story. UC Irvine is a good in-state alternative albeit different than UC Davis.
My son had no offers from any UCs for MechE (waitlisted then denied at UCI, UCSB, UCD and Cal Poly SLO, rejected UCB, UCLA, UCSD) so our options in state were SDSU, Cal Poly Pomona, SJ State and UCSC for Physics. His options out of state were much “better” for him so congrats to your son for being accepted to engineering at a UC!
i think this year was PARTICULARLY tough for the UCs because they had so many applicants, so most people SIRed to a UC that they used to consider a ‘safety’ because that was one of the only UCs they ended up getting into, making it harder for the UCs to take people off the waitlist because of the huge amount of SIRs. trust me, you all are extremely intelligent and qualified, and no matter where you go, you will do amazing things. i know what it feels like, davis has been my dream school since middle school, but just know that this doesn’t define who you are.
GUYS! My best friend just got in after filing an appeal! If anyone else sent in an appeal, keep a watch on your emails. Anything is possible! I wish you all the best of luck whether you are going to Davis or somewhere else
