awkwardpenguin13, from my school last year, LOT of students got into UCLA and berkeley with much lower scores than mine without outstanding ECs. My SAT score is 100~200 higher and GPA was higher. Also my ECs aren’t too bad. It’s getting easier for internationals to aim at UC (Lot of people agree and attribute it to financial difficulties UCs go through and their attempt to gain more tuition). Of course, scores are not everything since the admission process is holistic and I may be generalizing and biased. When I said probably, I didn’t mean they are safeties. I use it when my chance is higher than 50,60%. You can call me arrogant, but I’m just based on the statistics from my school.

Oh, I wasn’t even responding to calling Berkeley/UCLA a safety… I was referring to implying you were rejected from Columbia because of URM’s…

@RulemAll Go read his past posts, and you’ll understand why I said that. -_-

But you’re right, @RulemAll. I should’ve just brushed it off.

So there is another ardent proponent of affirmative actions. I never blamed other URMs or affirmative action for my rejection. Simply, I wasn’t good enough against others from my country and my essay wasn’t enough as the result proves. I had a debate about affirmative action and only few disagrees with its purpose. I support AA although I’m Asian since I believe it keeps the diverse community. But some people, often URMs, deny the whole existence of AA and say Asians are not in worse competition at all. All I said was there is AA, and it makes Asian harder to get in. This is undeniable fact. But I never criticized AA nor URMs.

Yes, but HateSMUS, college admissions are based on more than stats. Just because some kid in your school got in with your statistics does not mean you are guaranteed admission. You have to account for EC’s, recs, Essays, Course Rigor and the specific competitiveness of the applicant pool.

And I’m sorry, but URMs are not the reason you got rejected from Columbia. I was rejected too, and though I thought the same at first, some thought and review made me realize I didn’t get in because I didn’t try hard enough. My essays, and app in total, wasn’t good enough. And that’s fine. Now we move on. No point in dwelling on what’s done. I think you should take that too. Stop assuming you “deserve” to get in everywhere and just keep on moving forward.

I don’t believe in any predestination, nor do I support that adage “everything happens for a reason,” but I will say that what is done is done. Stop obsessing over nothing, get over yourself, and move on.

And I hope this isn’t the attitude you showed in your app.

Did you ever even think why Asians make up ~40% in UCs? They don’t have affirmative actions unlike other schools in CA such as Stanford. You need to learn to differentiate the difference between blaming affirmative action and acknowledging the presence of affirmative action. Any wonder why people say Asians are ORM?

Oh gosh, what have I started. Let’s stop now. I don’t want an AA argument on here, especially if we may be classmates later on.

No one is an “ardent proponent of AA.” We’re all just people anxious over college. And I think it is time for you to stop worrying about AA and work on your apps to the best of your ability. Let everything else sort itself out.

Before you ignorants criticize me, please refer to specific comments where I ‘blamed’ URMs for my rejection? All I said was there is an AA and it makes Asian harder to get in. It wasn’t to make up excuses for my rejection, but I couldn’t pass by some ppl claiming the admission process is totally fair for every race. Sorry for such offensive words, but you have to prove evidence before you claim something. I don’t want to start another debate about AA.

Wow this thread covers a lot of different topics haha…
We probably should make a new “Official UChicago class of 2012 EA result” lol

@Rdlrds12 : check the PM I sent you, hopefully that should clear things up.

lol totally butchered your username there sorry Rldmsd12

laalalalalalallalalaalalalalalalaalalalalalalalaalalalalallalalaalalalaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

@logicx24, tell me when I said my rejection is caused by admitted URMs? I’ve never said or implied such things which make the speaker just pathetic and complaining for his own failure. By the way, I have decent ECs, recs, essays, tons of APs, so I don’t need your pedantic lectures on my chance.

@ everyone who is talking about the whole AA business… I think you guys misunderstood HateSMUS. I think everyone’s just a tad bit sensitive right now…being only a few days before decision. Let’s all be friendly…

@Wharton17 Yes, I do have an X next to my parents 2011 tax return which is why I was freaking out before hahaha sigh…

Yeah, there’s an X next to my tax returns too, which is weird because I definitely sent them… I applied to UChicago through Questbridge… I HAD to send those. haha

@logicx24, one last thing. I’m completely over Columbia and moved on to Chicago and RD apps. You are the one who brought it up. A piece of advise. ‘Don’t show your speculative nature on your application.’

omg, would you quiet down. Seriously, we moved on.
