Official UNC-Chapel Hill Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

Hello everyone, I have been monitoring this thread for a little while, and I am surprised at the lack of activity on it when compared to the “UNC Transfer Threads” of the past. I am another non-traditional student who is serving active duty in the Marine Corps. I have been in eleven years and I am wore out after completing two tours of Iraq and three in Afghanistan (here right now). My stats are not great: 3.25 college gpa (Chaminade University of Honolulu), 29 year old Hispanic male, married (no children) etc. I submitted my application September of last year, before I deployed. I hope to be the grand old man of UNC.

I’m definitely surprised as to lack of activity on this thread as well. I would think there would be much more activity than years previous due to UNC’s continuing prestige in the world of academia.

@CCstudentNYC I definitely agree… I wouldn’t doubt that they have someone from admissions analyzing this.

I hope the SAT doesn’t carry much weight. Personally, I think it’s an awful judgment of intelligence.

Saltydog: The school is increasingly becoming more veteran friendly. They actually went as far as to set aside dorms for non-trad military veterans such as you and I. What are your full stats? are you applying as a soph or junior? Btw, you won’t be the only old man there, I’m 28. And stay safe over there, my old unit just got back and they said it was crazy and they wre in contact almost everyday. If you need any help or anything don’t hesitate to PM me and I’ll see what I can do.

CCstudentNYC: Thanks for the offer, I will be sure to ask if I need information on something. I applied as a Sophomore because I am not sure how many of my credits will actually transfer over (I have 84). A lot of those credits are electives from what is called a SMART transcript (Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript). The American Council on Education gives college credit recommendations based off any training that a Marine or Sailor has done.

-College GPA: 3.25/AS in Criminology and Criminal Justice
-HS: You don’t want to know (2.35)
-EC’s: Volunteer work and lots of physical labor for Uncle Sam!
-SAT: Admissions waived it after I contacted them (I’m not sure if they will hold it against me or not, since I am applying as a Soph).
-I am the first member of my immediate family to attend college, and will eventually be the first to hold a four year degree.
-I want to major in Nutrition

*I rage every time I look at my application because (1) I wish I would have taken my time on it and (2) there is a date error in there. Everything was rush, rush, rush for me in September before we deployed.

On a side note, Afghanistan has calmed significantly this year. I have spent some part of every year in this province since 2009 and there is little to no contact right now. This is a good thing. Anyhow, I would like to wish everyone here good luck with everything.

I just wish we had a solid decision date at least. Lol. That way I could mentally prepare myself.

bcotton: +1 on that. I think thats the worst part im getting so anxious lol

ive spent some time this last week trying to estimate when we will hear back and right now my hope is that they release them next Friday. They have always released on a Friday in the past and that is about the same amount of time from the application deadline to the notification date in years past. Plus it is almost exactly two weeks before when they released last year which makes sense because they moved the application deadline up and it fits with what the person in admissions told CCstudentNYC about decisions releasing within two weeks.

So its just a guess but hopefully by this time next week well know!

I’m going to mentally prep myself for April 8th, and if it comes any sooner than that, it will just be a rather nice surprise.

I had a friend who met with admissions last Friday (the 22nd) and they told her that it would be within te next 2 weeks. Which would be this Friday. I’m praying for this week

If it is this Friday, it is April 5th…

I hope to be next Friday, but last year all decision was out at 4/20 and I believe it was Friday at that time.

That’s great news. However, this is probably going to be the longest week of my life.

It still feels like forever away. Does anyone know if they look at our previous applications when making transfer decisions if we have applied before? Like essays, recommendations, etc?

@Hopeful, When I visited the Emory campus and spoke to an Emory admissions officer, I was told that they usually don’t look at previous applications, unless specifically asked to. I don’t know if UNC has the same policy, but I would assume so.

I hope decisions come out this friday, Chapel Hill is probably the decision I am most anxious about, since it is the first decision that I receive.

Sat100: do you think it would be hurtful to email them now about looking at my essays from last year? I was deferred in HS and I just reread them and I feel like they really show a side of me that admissions would like. I couldn’t rewrite them this year, just because that would be so lazy (haha). It’s really late to submit stuff, I know, so I don’t want to email them if it will hurt my chances…

@hopefuly Sure, if you think it would help your application. However, I think it might be a little too late for that. There is a chance that your application has already been reviewed.

SAT100: okay thanks for the info. I may if it could only help my chances. I’m anxious for this decision as well, UNC is the only school I applied to transfer to.

Does anyone know if it’ll say “reviewed” once they review our application?
& if it’s this Friday… idk if that makes me feel happy or not…
The sooner the better, I guess, because of the anxiety.
But I’m nervous!

@Hopeful, UNC is the only school I applied to transfer too as well! That’s why I’m over here trying not to start back up that old nail-biting habit from middle school haha. Good luck to you :)

When I called like three weeks ago, they said the decisions will be release on mid April. I will try call again on Monday and verify the exact decision date.

bcotton, I’m glad I’m not the only one! Where are you transferring from? And same here, I’m worrying myself sick as the time grows closer.

And just to clarify, that’s just what one of the admissions officers told a friend. It wasn’t set in stone, just an educated guess. But a couple years back the decisions were sent out on the 9th so it isn’t too terribly early for them! :)
