its about that time, lets get this going..

I guess I will start

transferring from CC oos
3.4 first semester 3.6 second and hopefully a 3.8 this semester which will be a 3.61 cumulative :(
Will be applying as a junior

my ec's are pretty weak but any advice will be greatly appreciated!

rumor has it UNC doesn’t care if we’re OOS as transfers? If that’s the case I’m feeling great about my chances

Stats: Non-Trad 25, SC resident, Hispanic male
hooks: hispanic, military, research, pro-sports
College: CC(fresh) transferred->College of Charleston(soph)
College GPA: 47 credits 4.0 through this fall - (doing pre-med requirements right now @ CofC)
HS GPA: 3.3
SAT: Math-710 Verbal-630
Me: took a 9 month trial-contract with a professional soccer team in Spain right after HS, didn’t cut it and moved back to the US playing lower level professional soccer for a few years (USL-think A/AA baseball), got something like 13 varsity letters and was an all-state soccer player back in HS, realized I wasn’t good enough to make it to the big time so joined the Air Force reserves to pay tuition (spent a year away @ basic/tech school - graduated w/honors 99% testing/99% fitness of all graduates) and here I am…

current ECs: research in a marine bio lab looking to be published some time late 2013, volunteer at a low income health clinic, monthly AF drill weekends, club soccer, physics tutor

reason for transferring: the state cut the scholarship funding promised to Military personnel so I’m out 9k a year in scholarships looking fwd…

Yeah you’re good. Do yourself a favor and don’t stress waiting for April.

Let me relay some things to you:

Minority
Non-traditional
Professional sports
4.0 gpa
Served in military
Saying you will be published (mmmhm, don’t say you will be published to them, say you have been working in a lab, give them the amount of hours and only if the journal is published do you whip that baby out)

You have higher stats than I did and I got in. Unless you’re trash at writing essays I would say you’re a good fit.

OOS College Freshman, went to Virginia Tech first semester (3.23 gpa) and decided to go back home to take classes at CC; want to save money/work before hopefully going out of state.

4.2 Weighted GPA in high school, took 8 AP classes
1800 SAT, 560-R, 610-M, 630-W
Played baseball and basketball in high school.
Was a National Honor Society and French NHS member.

Started school’s first math club and was involved in a few other clubs.
Accumulated many volunteer hours including coaching youth basketball during high school

Virginia Tech is most notably an engineering school and did not have what i wanted to study. Will likely remain at CC for an additional year and apply to UNC as an incoming Junior if I don’t get in on this go around

Good Luck Everyone!

My reasons for transfer are my current school does not offer the Classics major and I am not being challenged academically. In addition there is not a large community of Classics interest among the students and very few professors (No research opportunities) in my school to engage academically or in social events such as symposium. I am trying to design a self major of Classics but even if approved by the college I would still have to do another gap year of undergrad courses in order to meet the requirements for grad school. My goal is to get my PHD in classical studies. I feel my essays communicated my reasons for transfer very well and they described who I am and what contributions I hope to make to the University. Thank you for any feedback

Junior transfer from a decent NY state school. My college GPA is a 3.6. I did poorly my first semester due to family problems (separation of parents), but received a 3.8 and 4.0 in the preceding semesters. I have had multiple internships, most recent was with a small firm in Manhattan - set up networking/informational conferences for people interested in the high frequency trading industry. I am a member of a business club and the club lacrosse team. Also involved in a couple fund raising/community service activities (not much). The main reason for transferring is to go to a better business program and target school.

Do you guys think my academic performance first semester will hurt my chances?

Sophomore transfer from NYU:
College GPA: 3.75
High school GPA: uh… 3.7? (unweighted)
Cheerleader in high school (both competitive and sideline)
Hall council in college
Captain of Relay For Life in college
Minority (black, white, and Japanese)
Military dependent
ACT: 29
Don’t know my class rank.

Do they ask for reason for transfer?

Sophomore transfer from the University of South Carolina
In state student
High School GPA: 4.3 weighted
College GPA: 3.7
SAT: 1930, 1250 2 part
decent amount of ECs in college and high school
strong essays and good letters of recommendation

I’m an education major and want to earn my degree from a NC school, and Carolina has a fantastic program for education. It doesn’t make since for me to stay at my current school as an education major because ultimately I want to teach in NC. Also there is a much better opportunity for me to obtain education grants and scholarships if I am attending an in-state school. My essay discusses why UNC’s education program appeals to me more so than other schools.

I applied last year and was denied, but Carolina has always been the only place I wanted to go. What are my chances?

I want to know if I have good enough stats to get in as a sophomore transfer!

I have a 4.0 gpa right now at my current school and I’ve taken harder classes like biology, anatomy and physiology, prob and stat, etc. I’m a dental hygiene major with a pre-dental track.

EC’s for college include being a member on the standards board of sigma kappa sorority, close to 100 hours of volunteering my first semester including food pantry, habitat for humanity, sandy relief (I’m from nj) animal shelter volunteering, Alzheimer’s awareness, relay for life, pre-dental club, RAM clinic which is a clinic for people who cannot afford health care and a bunch of other community things I do through my sorority.

I’m nervous because of my high school stats, I only did average. I had a 3.5 gpa (weighted) and some ec’s. I know they ask on common app only for junior and senior year which I received an academic achievement award for which one of my teachers nominated me, I received principals honor roll 3 out of my 4 quarters and high honor roll on the fourth. I also got an academic achievement award from my states dental and medical school because I participated in my vocational school linked to my high schools dental assisting program. Also through that I was able to get dental assisting jobs in an actual dental office where I got tons of clinical experience.

I’m in the process of writing my essays now to hopefully make them perfect! I only got a 1410 on my sat, and that’s everything added together not just math and reading. I’m a terrible test taker:( though I am taking the act in February to hopefully boost my chances! I know the only people who think I stand a chance are the members of the admissions board, but I seriously thinking about this day and might I’m so nervous! If some could maybe give me an idea of what I’m looking like I’d really appreciate it!:)

Sorry for all the spelling errors, I forgot to check what I wrote and I’m not very good at typing on my phone:)

College GPA: 4.0
High School GPA: 3.84 UW, 5.0 weighted (9 AP classes)

Main Extracurriculars:

Besides AP acheivement stuff, I won the annual school award for physics.

I probably would’ve gotten in last year, considering that I’m in-state, but didn’t apply because I thought I wanted to do engineering. The only possible hook I have is that my identical twin attends UNC, but I don’t really intend to play that up.

Does UNC accept/consider mid semester grades if submitted?

I am also very interested in transferring to George Washington (my first choice as a high school senior but was rejected). colonial37, why are you transferring if you don’t mind me asking?

GW is a great school I do really like it but I came in as a political science major and the opportunities you get from being in DC are great. On the other hand, I switched to an accounting major so my hope is to transfer to UNC and eventually get my Master of Accountancy there because of how great the program is. If you have any other questions about GW, feel free to ask away!

OOS CC Sophmore transfer

Non-traditional (27) 2 kids, prior service, Native American.

H.S. Dropped out
College GPA 3.5 will transfer with (had a shakey semester last fall, we were basically evicted without the legal hassle the week school started, and I was taking 2 online classes)

SAT (yes i took the SAT as a 27 year old adult) 1870 - My math was super low, while reading and writing were in the 90%+

Aiming for a Political Science major; Classes taken are Micro and Macro econ, English 100, Pre-1865 U.S. History, Politcal Science, Biology, Astronomy + lab, British Lit post 1800, Statistics, and a college success course

EC: ASG Executive Board Treasurer, and sit on a half dozen college committees.
District Student Council (there are 3 CC’s in our area that pool some resources and work together, but as independent entities) board Secretary.
Delegate to the State College GA (general assembly) and to the regional board of 14 CC’s.
I spent a large portion of the fall interning for a congressional hopeful, who did not end up winning the election bid, but nevertheless, gave me a great experience in what I hope to be my future career.
I work, I have 2 toddlers, I’m reentering school after more than 10 years, and I’m diving in head-first.

I’m in California now, but I don’t want my kids raised here, so I’m looking back east and decided on 2 schools I really want to go to. Hopefully I didn’t shoot myself in the foot when I let a bad event in high school put everything in my life on hold.

colonial37: I’ve applied to both GW and UNC (not as a transfer but as a freshman) and am thinking of majoring in history / political science. Haven’t visited either school yet, but I’m planning to visit both next month. How do you think the schools compare academically and socially? UNC seems like it would be a great college experience. I like GW for the internship possibilities in DC. Does GW have much of a campus and does that affect the college experience? Do students actually spend time on both GW campuses? Thanks for any info and good luck on your transfer!

SweetWB: Good luck with everything I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed at either! GW is great for political science the internships and experiences you get from being in DC are crazy. Academically it definitely depends on what you’re studying. UNC does seem like it would be more of a college experience. GW is a different experience, theres obviously not as much school pride but it still does feel like a campus when you’re on it. People mainly stay in Foggy Bottom so I would definitely recommend that if you end up coming here.

Getting nervous fine-tuning my essay. If anyone has some time and would want to check it over, I would be greatly appreciative.

Also, I have a couple of letters of rec I would like to submit, one from the college president, and one from my economics prof. Should I fax them over, or stamp and mail them in, seeing as they most likely will not be there by Friday?
