Official UNC-Chapel Hill Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

Idk what’s about to happen with my decision. I feel like if I don’t get too convinced I’m gonna get accepted, it’ll be good either way. 1. If I get denied, I won’t be as disappointed as I would be if I fully convince myself I’m gonna get accepted & 2. If I get accepted, it’ll make me that much more excited because I wasn’t sure.

I vote we all adopt this philosophy of mine & try our best to think nice, happy, Carolina blue thoughts. Lol.

How hard exactly is it to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill? It’s been my 1st choice for a while (tied with Johns Hopkins). If I end up going to Hopkins over Chapel Hill (I was accepted at both), but decide that Hopkins is either too challenging or not my style, do I still have a chance at transferring my freshman year? Or will Chapel Hill reject me as a transfer because they accepted me out of high school but I chose not to go? I’m so scared.

@Dreams Well, I wouldn’t transfer from Hopkins to Chapel Hill expecting much of an easier curriculum lol.

Uh… if you mean transferring freshman year to go to UNC sophomore year, you COULD transfer. That doesn’t mean you’ll get accepted though. You also have to keep in mind that the pool of applicants is different every year so there’s not really anything that guarantees denial…

As far as having been accepted already… I don’t really think they’re supposed to reject you for that reason…? But I don’t really know how that would go…

I think what you need to do is figure out if Hopkins is “not your style” like… now. Go to the campus, talk to some students if you can, ask questions about how challenging the work is/how heavy the workload is/whatever else. You can usually get a feel for the campus just by visiting.

& like I said before, I’m not sure I’d recommend transferring out of a school because you think it’s too hard considering that UNC isn’t an “easy” school by any means & I’ve read a lot about the workload being kinda heavy & finals week being hell, consisting of hourssssssss in the library.

Visit campuses, hop on forums like this one and try to get answers to some questions that students would be able to answer, read reviews - read lots of reviews, & think about which school is more likely to 1. fit you as a person & 2. get you where you want to be academically.

@CCStudent

Can’t wait for the season premiere! Probably more excited for that than seeing my UNC decision lol (I haven’t been very anxious for my decisions this year, idk why). The 3rd book was my favorite.

@Dream

If you got accepted to JH as a first-year, then I am sure that you will have a great chance of being accepted to UNC as a transfer. UNC is much easier to be accepted to as a transfer, at least if you are applying from OOS.

Random question, did you guys send recommendations?

@Hopeful No, I didn’t. You?

I sent two. One from a HS AP teacher and one from a manager at a restaurant I worked at. I didn’t know if I should or not so I just did incase haha

It wasn’t required lol. I didn’t because I wanted my application in ASAP, mainly since I knew it was gonna be tricky making sure they got all my transcripts and stuff.

I sent in one. Good family friend who went to UNC for undergrad and Masters, who has donated a lot of money to the university, as well as being a legacy family. So, I’m feeling pretty good about my recommendation. I sort of wish that I had gotten some professors to send some in for me too. Oh well, nothing I can do now.

@bcotton & SAT100 Thanks guys! I’m not sure if I’m fond of Hopkins’ overly competitive environment just yet. I was thinking Chapel Hill might be more supportive than competitive. I’m visiting both soon, but I just want to make sure I don’t end up trapped in a school I don’t like in case I make a rash decision. I’ve heard about premed at Chapel Hill not being “easy”. Then again, no school has an “easy” premed program… I was accepted OOS for Chapel Hill, so I guess transferring in is actually easier than getting accepted directly out of high school. Maybe if I got accepted once, I can do it again? I just hope they don’t hold that against me if I want to go back. Thanks guys! Hope you all get in!

Do they take into account the difficulty of the school you are transferring from?
Originally went to Virginia Tech, I know it isn’t the most strenuous classes but also not easy

Also, good luck to everyone it sounds like you all have great odds of getting accepted! And having anxiety is very normal to situations like this, we are all in the same boat.

@SAT100- 10 minutes and counting!!! I’m pumped. I’m not going to read the books until the series is over. As for television I only watch three shows, so I don’t want to ruin anything for myself.

@Dreamsarereal- I’ve never attended either/or, but Chapel Hill’s bell curve kind of makes it indirectly competitive. As for workload, I believe the average GPA at chapel hill is around 3.0 or somewhere in that range due to grade deflation. I’ve been told numerous times, you don’t go to Chapel Hill to get perfect grades and have a grandiose social life; but you’ll leave with a hell of an education. All I really know about JH is that it’s an awesome school. Mayor Bloomberg went there and just donated 325 million dollars to them a few months after a hurricane ravaged his city. I thought that was awesome considering there are still people who don’t have any furniture and extensive damage insurance or FEMA didn’t cover(including my mothers house which was neck deep in flood water). Instead he started a fund and raised 32 million from other people. God, I hate that man with a passion. Can we say random off-topic rant?

As for recs, I sent two. One from a professor I took ENG-102 and LIB200 with both classes I received an A. My second rec was from a professor who taught at Columbia that I took a creative non-fiction ENG-275 workshop with and got an A. He mentioned that he is going to submit one of my papers for publishing in the schools literary journal. Both recs were very personal and non-generic and I think they’re going to help my app.

Additionally, I sent in a bunch of stuff that wasn’t required.I sent a photograph of me at an orphanage in Baghdad, Iraq. I sent an additional writing sample which was an article I wrote for the honor society. I also sent my DD-214(it’s like an official record that shows everything you’ve done in the military) Certificates from infantry school, Airborne school and IMLC a very advanced class that is for high ranking individuals( I was literally the lowest ranking soldier in the whole class) It was 9-12 hours of classroom instruction a day and implementing what we learned in the field. Also, I sent my PTK certificate and my honors course certificates. Yea, they say they have holistic admissions, so I gave them holistic.

@CCstudentNYC – I think your odds are excellent. I can’t imagine a situation in which you possibly get denied.

@CCStudentNYC Yeah, I’ve heard of the bell curve. Unfortunately, it seems that almost all schools have that same curve. Hopkins in similar, but I do believe their average SAT score is above 2200, which could make it much more difficult. It’s also a school with little partying/social scene and TONS of hard workers trying to be at the top of the bell curve. It sort of scares me because I’m not used to being graded on a curve like that :frowning: And yes! NY definitely needed Sandy relief…that hurricane was quite damaging. I remember losing power for so so long…

@Dreams …do you WANT a school with little partying/social scene? If so, I don’t think that’s UNC. lol. I think of UNC as one of those “Work hard, play hard” places.

@Carolina10 I’m assuming that they would. Getting a good GPA at like… U Penn is different than getting a good GPA at your local party school or whatever. So I’m sure they take into account the level of difficulty at your school.

General statement: Boo. Now I’m worried since I didn’t send any recommendations.

I’m really hoping bcotton is right… 3.37 isnt earth shattering but I’m hoping because GW is a pretty recognized school ill be ok but I guess we’ll see

If only we knew how long the wait will be…
Lol

I think bcotton530 is right. What I should have said is the party scene is there, but it comes at a price.

Wait, are you talking about UNC or JH?
