Official UNC-Chapel Hill Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

UNC: There is a very good party scene. But people that get caught up suffer.

hi guys. I just found this thread and understand how nervous you guys are like me…
can any of you please take a look at my status? I posted up mine on my country’s website and didn’t get as much information and advices as I expected.

Very long story short,

High school gpa: 2.x (spent the whole 3 years for my professional pc game contest and billiard contest, which are stated on my app.)

Community College gpa: 3.900 (41.5 credits and 21 credits are in progress now)

Awards and activities: dean’s list for 3 semesters, several scholarships including the one from enlish department as an international student, ptk member, math club, campus magazine, volunteer as an english tutor at a local church, tutor for college students, participation in international essay contest.

How does it look like? I see so many strong candidates here.
I hope unc takes a close look at my absolute best since I came to U.S. I started English from A,B,C and D, and math from elementary algebra, which are stated on my transcript.
can u guys please tell me about my status?

Oh, I wouldn’t make the latter specific to UNC. That’s just… anywhere. Lol. However, the former isn’t something that exists at all colleges.

I suppose you’re correct when put in a broad context. However, if you’re above average in the intelligence area, getting caught up partying in SUNY Albany won’t hurt nearly as much as getting caught up partying in Chapel Hill will, is more along the lines of what I’m getting at.

Tndud: I think you show drastic improvement and have enough credits to demonstrate you’re perfectly capable. You also have very good EC’s. I’m no expert, but I would say you have a great chance.

CCstudentNYC: Thank you so much. Your comment made me feel much relaxed.
And I am very glad to see you as I am also a CC student in NY! What school do you go to? I go to CUNY Queensborough community college!

@bcotton @colonial–thanks, yea i got a 3.3 in fall (freshman) semester at va tech (tried to do a little too much)…really planning to apply with better grades next year, but i guess i’ll see what happens

I just graduated from LaGuardia CC in Long Island City. So now that makes three students from NYC CC’s applying that I know of. May I ask why you chose Chapel Hill? Reason being, most students from PTK and community colleges are obsessed with the ivies and the popular schools within the tri-state area. When I told most people Chapel Hill was my first choice they gave me the crooked, confused look like “what’s a chapel hill!?”

hey guys, could someone chance me please!
I’m applying as a rising sophomore. My first semester grades have me worried (C, C+, B-, B, B, B+). i hope they consider that i took a difficult course load, and Wake Forest is pretty bad with grade deflation. my college EC’s include working 8+ hours a week, volunteering 20+ hours over Christmas break, intramural soccer, and RUF.
My HS GPA weighted was like 3.9, but on north carolina grading scale i think it would have been over a 4. 5 AP classes, the rest were honors. HS EC’s include state champion with varsity soccer, state runners up with club soccer, national honor society, french national honor society, and doing research in a lab at a hospital the summer before senior year. My SAT was a 1340/2040, and i’m also an URM (both parents from Africa) if that makes a difference.

@Ronaldinho None of us have been accepted. So the best I can do is tell you my stats, I guess.

I attend NYU.
My first semester GPA was 3.75. A, A, A-, B+… I think.
College ECs - I’m part of my dorm’s hall council & I’m captain of my dorm’s Relay for Life team. I waitressed for Holiday House for a month or so which is something that benefits breast cancer research. That’s all I can think of, I guess lol.

HS GPA unweighted was ~ 3.75. My HS transcript is just a mess since I’m a military brat, so I won’t even get into that. I did the best I could as far as courses. I was a Varsity cheerleader freshman and senior year. I worked junior year. I’m really bad at remembering my own achievements, honestly. Lol. My SAT was 1860 (?) I think. But my ACT was 29. Uh… I’m multi-racial. Like I said, I’m a military brat.

that’s all I can think of.
Hope that helps a little?

Has anyone called admissions asking when they’re releasing everything? I feel like we’d probably get more information from calling. I sent an email asking last week, and the admissions person still said it was mid-april. Anyone heard anything more recently?

thanks bcotton, its just so hard to stay calm. im sort of wishing i hadnt placed into the accelerated class of 4th semester french now, because that C is really bothering me. according to collegeboard the acceptance rate for transfers is 42%, does that sound right to you guys?

and carolinaboy, i called last week and they told me mid april too, but i think thats just the tentative date.

@CCstudentNYUC :

Wow! I have many friends in LaGuardia and some of them transferred to Columbia and nyu, like a prestigeous school in terms of the ‘name.’

Well, I once read a newspaper talking about Warton Business School, AEM of Cornell, etc. The students were assigned to negotiate with a laundromat, which means making the price cheaper. It seemed so professional and fancy that I wanted to be a part of the project. But most people think about financial rewards when it comes to professional fields, such as business. I just thought, “how about the owner of the laundromat is a graduate from Harvard business school who was fully educated and knew how to deal with his coustomers?”

Are you getting my point now? Professional fields train people to make profits and this is not my goal, of course. I need liberal arts curriculums to know how the world works, how each individual co-exists, how they value things with different level of significance. Most importantly, both human qualities of good and evil. And these “skills”, which come from liberal arts curriculums and life experiences, are going to be used in our lives, like the laundromat project.

I don’t need money, although I absolutely need it. I have already over 1 million depts from my father’s relatives as an international student with no chance of getting financial aid and student loans, but I NEVER changed my mind. The more I study, the more I want to learn about the world and people. I just want to dig further, reach farther, and jump deeper into the world of knowledge.

I applied to amherst college, UNC, university of virginia, and emory university, all of which place a significant weight on liberal arts programs.

This is too long, sorry, but I just wantd to tell you what I think.
I don’t wanna make money on wall street after graduation. I don’t wanna be something, but wanna do something in my future. All schools do not need to teach professional skills used in most of the companies i the world. In a real world, we will learn about those skills within 3 months, I bet. School life as a whole is the most important part of the process of becoming adapted to this fast-growing world.

Hope this is enough for you to understand why I applied to UNC!!
I was a bit aggressive, sorry about that, but I see so many young guys that talk about money, car, sex and stuffs like that. I always say, “you go to 4 years college and get the money, car and everything.”

Carolinaboy, I feel the same about not being challenged academically. What school do you attend right now?

CCstudentNYC:

Of course, i wanted to go to a fancy school before lol but then i changed my mind

Tndud: You picked some great schools. And I understand what you’re saying about money being on the forefront of every thought. If you do what you love, the money will follow. I think you’re going to do great and best of luck to you.

@HopefulHeel – I currently attend UNC-G. It’s an overall good school, but not challenging. I feel above everyone else, and as a freshman, that’s a little disappointing for me.

Carolinaboy, oh okay, I have a friend at UNCG! I go to UNCW. I have the same feeling, when everyone else is struggling I’m still doing well with little effort. For example, I made a 4.0 last semester with harder classes like 200 level stats and chem and foreign language without working myself to death. UNCW has a great bio department though, which is my major, but they focus so much on marine bio and I’m looking more to go into the medical field.

Has anyone applied for the cross scholars program that is run in conjunction with Duke-UNC?

@Cirques Idk anything about that, lol.

Plan on stalking the admissions blog & my myCarolina acct. all month until decisions are posted. In case you guys don’t know, the decisions will be on myCarolina followed by the lovely (or depressing) official letter in the mail.
