<p>Im fairly surprised I got in, especially now that I'm looking at some of the other people and their scores. I'm a white male from new york.. 1440 on my sats, 670 n 680 on my sat 2, 99 average, decent extra curriculars but mainly clubs and stuff no ridiculous summer adventures across the world, sports took up most of my time and i made that relatively clear, Iv been on varsity soccer n basketball for 3 years, and golf for 4, captain of all 3 and recieved all league n county awards, but not good enough to play at a high college level, essay was kind of unique and people thought it was awesome, something you wouldnt expect after looking at the rest of my application i guess and recs were very good i think.. makes me feel pretty good seeing the rest of these accepted students, i thought i got in because im very well rounded but im sure everyone is who applies out of state so who knows..</p>
<p>You also have to take into consideration the applicant pool for UNC OOS is not the same caliber as the pools of Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Stanford/MIT/other top schools. Still, 22% is very low.</p>

<p>Decision: Accepted
Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Critical Reading 800 Math 770 Writing 800
ACT: 35 Composite
SAT II: U.S. History 800 Math II 800 Physics 790 Literature 730
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): my school has a weird GPA system- I guess somewhere around 4.0?
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn't rank- top 10%, and I suspect somewhere around top 5 (students).
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Physics B (5). AP Microeconomics (5). AP Macroeconomics (5). AP Calculus AB (5). AP English Language (5). AP United States History (5).
IB (place score in parenthesis): School doesn't offer IB.
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus 2 with Multi-Variable Calculus, AP European History, AP Spanish Language, AP English Literature, Asian Studies Honors, Band IV Honors (counts in GPA haha).
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Craighill Burks Award for Excellence in American History (given to top AP US History student), University of Pennsylvania Alumni Book Award, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Semi-Finalist, member of Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, and the like, and several musical/athletic awards that I don't care to list. </p>
<p>Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 1. Classical and jazz piano for 12 years- I take lessons with a prominent professor at a renowned music school, have given several solo piano recitals, have played jazz piano with school band since freshman year. 2. Classical and jazz trumpet for 7 years- 1st Trumpet in several regional honor bands, as well as principal trumpet in school symphonic band, lead trumpet in school jazz band. 3. Number two member of Academic Team (Quizbowl)- have placed highly last two years at NAQT Nationals, and won state championship last two years as well. 4. Member of Varsity Basketball Team for four years, though not huge contributor. 5. Geography Team member- won county contest each year I competed.
Job/Work Experience: 1. Piano Accompanist for people at my school performing instrumental solos for Solo/Ensemble Festival. 2. Junior Counselor at my school's summer camp two years ago. 3. Paid piano performer for several local churches around my city.
Volunteer/Community service: This is, I think, what helped to push my application over the edge, in terms of leadership. 1. I founded and became the chairman of a Music Department at a branch of the Breakthrough Collaborative, an organization designed to put disadvantaged students in college prep schools and 4-year colleges, and recruited musically inclined friends and other young musicans to teach private lessons over the summer. 2. I'm President of a school club called "Rock 4 Relief" that holds benefit rock concerts with performers from school, (raised over 3,000 dollars from the last one) and (3.) I organize a concert every year for elderly nursing homes around my area, called the "Chocolate Covered Strawberry Tour." 4. I also built homes over the last two summers for victims of Hurricane Katrina with the varsity basketball team.
Summer Activities: See above.
Essays: Spent a lot, a lot of time on these. Short was about how playing basketball has affected my life. Long was about music's effect on my life- also pretty good, compactly written essay.
Teacher Recommendation: Signed off on waiver, but from Econ teacher, a teacher I had gotten to know well, so I'm sure it came out fine.
Counselor Rec: Academic team sponsor, knew me well, I'm sure was a solid advocate for me.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yup.
Intended Major: Mathematical Decision Sciences. Maybe Music?
State (if domestic applicant): Florida
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Independent
Ethnicity: Caucasian/White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Upper-middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I'm a guy- suppose that gives me an advantage, but no legacy, no first generation, no ethnicity, not geographically diverse, not a recruited athlete or anything like that.
Reflection
Strengths: I have a lot of energy to excel academically, musically, athletically, and also take on many leadership roles around my community and my school. I spent a lot of time on my essays, filling out my application meticulously, and just making sure my application would be competitive. My recommendations were also very good.
Weaknesses: Wasn't much I could do else- I guess get more nationally recognized awards in piano and music?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My nonstop energy that I put into all my pursuits, the hard work I spent to prepare the application, my essays, my accomplishments, and glowing recs. Keep the faith in applying to college, and I wish the best of luck to everyone in getting into where they want to go.
General Comments: Good Luck!!</p>
<p>^^ Wow!! Shouldn't you go to Harvard?</p>
<p>There are many students at UNC with profiles like that of pianoguy. In most cases they have turned down HYPS and other "more prestigious" schools to attend UNC. Don't underestimate the student body at UNC, it is filled with brilliant, diverse, fun loving students who don't take themselves as seriously as students at some of those other schools and love the work hard play hard ethos at UNC.</p>
<p>i got in with a 34 ACT, very very good GPA, but only average ECs. on my application i put "gossip girl" as an answer for one of the questions. they're looking for real people...i promise!!!</p>
<p>Hi, eadad. Hi, everyone. I'm a UNC-CH mom -- eadad's son and my son are two years apart. I will reiterate what he said: many UNC-CH students have "Ivy" profiles, but prefer a more rounded college experience, with a full array of Division One sports, perhaps Greek life, and for the guys I think all the gorgeous girls are a big magnet! My son didn't say so, but I know that was what turned him off to the Iveys. He's had a great time at UNC, and is getting a wonderful education concurrently. Like eadad says, working hard, playing hard. And you can't beat UNC student-parent responsiveness. They do everything right. It's an amazing, amazing place.</p>
<p>Yeah as far as the girls go (and I'm an accepted OOS girl saying this, not some guy so don't call me a pig haha) but Carolina girls are wayy better than ones at Ivies or even Duke. I was joking with my friend who graduated from Duke about how we might not be able to talk anymore cause I got in and will hopefully be going and he was like "Are you kidding? I LOOOVE Carolina girls!"</p>
<p>i applied early action. has anyone been notified of scholarships yet or know when we are or were supposed to have heard?</p>
<p>Yes. The people being considered for the Carolina, Johnston, Col Robinson, etc scholarships were invited to the scholarship day in January, and results were mailed the week before last. From what I understand, it's possible you may still receive a partial scholarship, so don't give up quite yet.</p>
