It's not necessarily Affirmative Action, Tarheelbound.

I think their goal is to encourage diversity, which is good. I think that some of you guys are really underestimating some of the applicants who are URM. They all deserve to be there for one reason or another, since the adcoms accepted them.

And if you see a minority with a 1700-1800 SAT score, that score is still good. My WHITE friend got into Carolina with a 1780, so I think we should give more credit to the adcoms here.

please be mindful everyone that UNC is 83% instate
so don't feel too bad if you don't get in (:

oh! i just checked and i'm waitlisted...it's ok though...i already got into a school i like ^^
good luck to everyone else though!!

I can say with certainty that every single minority student I know at UNC is completely deserving of his or her acceptance--in fact, the only people I've ever met who've seemed less academically talented have been white students. I also know that my time here at Carolina is enriched because our admissions officers value diversity and recognize the huge advantages many non-minority students have had since birth. Don't underestimate your privilege; I am thankful every day that I've been practically handed everything I've achieved in life, and I'm well aware that many, many people my age have not been so lucky. This idea is the basis behind affirmative action, which I see as an equalizer.

I have to agree with Tut.
If everyone's treated as equals, then the admissions people shouldn't have access to name/country/ethnicity as part of the application.

It is...the ethnicity page is completely separate from the application. The only way they know what race you are is if you mention it in your essay/ECs (Afrikkan Club, etc).

So basically what I've gotten out of this is that everyone who responded that is IN college thinks minorities are very deserving of their admission. Those who don't are still in high school and either didn't get in, or haven't applied. So I guess it's just a maturity issue.

Anyway, I'd just advise everyone to be respectful to your peers. If you're going to judge whether someone deserves to get in or not based on a 4 hour test and the color of their skin, then frankly you don't deserve to be at a school the caliber of UNC. If you're a URM and you're giving the "system" all the credit for getting in, then you should re-align your thinking ASAP because once you're in college, there is no "system" and it's up to you to keep up. And this is coming from a white person who didn't even get in last year, btw.

Anyway, I'm off to study for finals (wooo!). Congrats to everyone who got in, and to those who didn't, there's are plenty of other wonderful schools out there. Later!
