[ b]Reflection
[ list]
[ *] Strengths:Scores, philosophy, essays, singing
[ *] Weaknesses:…Why Chicago essay maybe? Not really any I can think of, at the risk of sounding like a snob.
[ ] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I wanted to go and I feel like I’m a fit.
[ ] What would you have done differently?: nothing.

[ b]Other Factors:

[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:To all those rejected, a very wise blogger once said this institution is great. But only because of the students that go here. If you don’t go, it will make the institution less great, not you. You will do what you were going to do here anywhere else and make that institution and yourself great.
Deferred: Stay in touch and as Jacen Solo said “Some things you can’t control. If you fear them, then those things control you.”
Accepted: Very well done. I congratulate all of you

Other: I’m having reservations about UChicago because I am a party person. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an intellectual, but just as Socrates likes drinking and partying his head off, I would like to do that at college. I am the embodiment of a social existence so please PM me if you can dispel my reservations. Well… Socrates never really got drunk. But he did drink a lot, as Montaigne says. He just is a very good drinker. Nevertheless, I want to party at college so I hope U of C offers that. **

@insouciant
“Don’t talk about reverse psychology-- basically said Don’t accept me, and then said why they should while daring them not to accept me. Kinda worked, right?”

…that and your attitude were your real “oops”…

@emmele So… I can’t make a joke? Honestly, I’m happy to be deferred. Deferred is not the end of the world. Sure, it’s not accepted, but its still a chance. And I have other schools I can apply to. Life moves on, just enjoy it :)

@Insouciant
Well sure you can make a joke, however passive-aggressive it may be…but I’m just hinting to you how it appears and what it reflects about you. You weren’t rejected because you are white and your parents are educated…plenty of people had the same “bad circumstances” as you…You may have interviews and essays to write ahead…don’t let that negativity impede your efforts and the impression you make on people…I have one point to make: Don’t come into a process with such negative attitudes, you have the power to think things into being. These people getting accepted who are, quite frankly, “less qualified on paper” than you didn’t get in because they were “poor” or “URM”. They got in because they had a better attitude + more faith.

Extended essay(which topic): Playdoh to Plato. Not very creative. I wrote about playing with Playdoh as a child and eventually being introduced to Plato’s works in high school.
Total reach, so not surprised I got deffered. I would love to go, but although I’m going to try to get in I wont be totally crushed if I don’t, I guess.

Also, I was an opiate addict at age 15 who then got sober after months in treatment, which is something that at least may have made me stand out. It also was the cause for my low GPA and for my not having taken AP Calc. I touched on how I was now sober and how I do drug abuse prevention presentations at my school and help other teens get sober, but I didn’t focus too much on the topic. Although the experience has obviously shaped me as a person, I didn’t want it to define me.
