[] Strengths: Essays, art (uploaded portfolio), community connection with little kids, idk
[] Weaknesses: relatively poor junior year grades in comparison to predicted grades, no outstanding awards, below average SAT score, asian
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Maybe my EA essays were not Uchicagoan enough, or maybe its my juior grades. I have a feeling processing errors that caused 11 copies of teacher recommendations to be duplicated in my file might have contributed to my defferal.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not all decisions received, but so far accepted at: Pitt, UCSB, UCSD, UCLA, waiting for decisions from: Dartmouth, Brown, Yale, Princeton, Amherst, NYU, UCB

[/ul]General Comments: omg so excited Uchicago is the school I most like in terms of it’s intellectual and educational rationale. I want to tell everyboddy that deferral EA does not mean automatic rejection RD. Think carefully about why might your EA college defer you and update with new transcripts, accomplishments etc.

Decision: Waitlisted

[li] Why you think you were waitlisted: I am obviously competent but grades I had while living with an evil roommate make me a “risky” candidate
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: So thrilled not to have been rejected.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]

[li] Teacher Recommendation: Given that my mother wrote it… I think it was probably decent… not good, not horrible. Just okay.
[/li]

[] Additional Rec: (No counselor rec because I’m homeschooled.) Amazing. She emailed it to me to read, because she was so proud of it.
[] Additional Rec: Awesome. She read it to me over the phone, and I was in tears.
[li] Interview: I think it went pretty well. My interviewer was pretty wonderful, interesting, and gracious. She was a hippie back in her day and had lovely little stories. I really enjoyed my time with her.
[/li]

[] School Type: Homeschooled
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: <30,000

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: very experienced teacher? independent and proactive, maybe?
[] Weaknesses: Asian female, needs scholarships, homeschooled
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Possibly because I need scholarships, in light of this

UChicago needs to help support student applicants from their own state.
Also, my stats weren’t stellar.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Waitlisted at Northwestern, Accepted to CaseWestern Reserve, Gordon College, and St. John’s University.

[/ul]General Comments: I’m really disappointed that I am waitlisted, but I consider it an honor to still be considered. I really do like UChicago, and I hope I get a second shot. Best wishes to everyone else!
To my fellow homeschoolers, for whom I am writing this whole thing, here’s my advice- Don’t spend time in your essays trying to sound like a normal kid. The fact is we are not, and we should emphasize that. I am afraid I tried too hard to sound more traditional, which must have hurt my application.
Again, best wishes!

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 800R 800M 740W
[] ACT: Nopes
[] SAT II: 800’s (Math 2, Physics, Bio), 770 US
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.86
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank, but top 10% (Cum Laude)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5s (Bio, APUSH, Compsci, Calc AB, Calc BC, Euro, Physics B), English Lit (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Nopes
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Lang, Advanced Topics in CS, AP stats, AP Spanish lang, AP Physics C, 1/2 credit art, a very watered down HS multivariable calc course
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing major: National AP, National Merit Finalist, a few art and math awards that are kinda legit, but not really
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Math Club/Team (president and founding member), Political Club (prez), Art Society, Tennis (Varsity and JV), a school literary and visual arts magazine
[] Job/Work Experience: Unpaid research for two summers at Ohio State’s Cancer Center, didn’t accomplish too much because our lab was suffering from funding problems
[] Volunteer/Community service: library (lead volunteer), random school stuff
[] Summer Activities: Research and volunteering, went to a couple summer programs during the summer after freshman year
[] Essays: This is interesting
Common App: Delightfully awesome
Why Chicago: I tried to include the unique aspects of UChicago, but the essay wasn’t amazing
Favorite things: It was decent, but not amazing. I wrote about my favorite book (Brave New World)
Choice: #4: Write about a time you found something you weren’t looking for.
The essay itself was amazing, but it answered the prompt very indirectly. The adcoms could probably tell that I intended to use the essay for different apps and just copied and pasted it for Chicago. I could have changed it so it fit the prompt better, but I was too lazy.

[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably amazing
[] Counselor Rec: Really good
[] Additional Rec: Research mentor: really good
[] Interview: I thought it went pretty well, but my interviewer seemed to be testing me the whole time. I had to BS my way through a couple of questions, but I don’t think I said anything stupid.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Ohio
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: small (<90 per grade), “competitive” private school (we send around an average of 8 kids a year to top 10 schools or top 5 LACs, but most are slightly weaker than the people accepted to Top 10 schools and post on CC)
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 100,00+
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My stunning good looks
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: standardized tests, grades (kinda), “well-roundedness”
[] Weaknesses: Lack of significant accomplishments. Also, I’m a fun person, so I may die at UC (jkjk)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I didn’t show too much interest in Chicago. My Chicago-specific essays were a level or two below my common-app one and the one that I clearly copied from another app. It didn’t help that I neither toured campus nor contacted the adcoms. They probably think that I don’t actually want to go to UC (which is completely true). Alternatively, I could just be too derpy for Chicago.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: WashU, Case Western, and state schools
Deferred at Yale

[/ul]General Comments:
Congratulations for those of you accepted! UC is truly a wonderful place. That said, I am not completely sure why I applied there because they aren’t too generous with financial aid.

If you are waistlisted, there is a good chance that UC simply thinks that you are not truly passionate about UC. Definitely send an update letter. If you were rejected or don’t think you will make it off the waitlist, remember that you can be successful at any college. State schools are significantly cheaper too!.. and fun doesn’t die there. PARTY (but not too often)

Decision: Accepted

[] IB: None
[] Senior Year Course Load: First Semester: Pre-Calc, AP English Lit, AP Spanish Lit, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, AP Calc, AP Gov/Econ, Anatomy, Tutor for Honors Spanish 3
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None.

[] Summer Activities: 2 week Course in Mexico, job and internship
[] Essays: My biggest asset, I chose to write on the “Living and Dreaming” prompt.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Spanish teacher and US History/Gov/Econ Teacher, both of which I am very close with and see me highly among other students.
[] Counselor Rec: New counselor this year, I didn’t have much of a relationship with him.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: Through Email.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State: CA
[] Country: USA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket:—
[li] Hooks: Fluent in two languages, small community
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:Writing, extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: Organization through the process
[] Why you think you were accepted: Letter to the Dean, good writing, improved grades and test scores after being defferred
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: DePaul, SDSU, Cal Maritime, University of Utah, UCSC. Rejected: UCSD, UCLA. Waiting on: Northwestern, Barnard, NYU, Berkeley

[/ul]General Comments:
I think that I am an example of someone who doesn’t have the best test scores and grades, but put a ton of effort in to their application. I am proof that you can get in!

Waitlisted…stats are somewhere else
Meh

Posting quickly for a friend. Accepted, 97 GPA; 2350 SATs; 770-800s on Math II/French/USH; 5 on BC Calc/AP French/APUSH. Current schedule: Calc III at Columbia, Shakespeare, AP Physics, Constitutional Law, Theater Teaching Internship. ECs: lots of theater (directing/acting/stage managing); various hiking trips during the summer. Accepted at a top-30 liberal arts school (likely letter), deferred from Yale EA, and waiting on the rest. White male from NYC.

Waitlisted

Average public high school:
UW GPA - 3.3 and midyear grades probably brought it down to about a 3.1 (downward trend for all four years, just a mess in general)
SAT 2210 (760 M, 750 R, 700 W)
Rank: 25%

ECs: not going to list them all but i was extremely involved in a lot of things, had a lot of leadership positions, and had an average but good amount of community service

Thoughts: I… have no idea why I was even waitlisted. I was so sure that I was going to be rejected that I almost didn’t even check it. If I had to pick one reason why I might have gotten waitlisted instead of rejected outright, it would be my reverse psychology essay. I wrote it as a conversation between the admissions counselor and their mom, where the mom was telling them not to accept me and the adcon was saying that they wanted me. It was last minute and weird… and stupid. And… I’m just so confused.

I feel like they just waitlisted everybody this year. I think if my midyear grades were awesome like I was going to make them be, then I would have gotten in because of the upward trend thing. Maybe second semester grade will have an impact on getting off the waitlist?

Decision: Rejected

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not sure, but it wasn’t because I’m better than anyone else. Maybe it was a fit thing?
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Waiting on pretty much every other school. And I harbor no anxiety. Feels good.

I screamed, I cried, I was and am deliriously happy.

Decision: Waitlisted

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred- Yale (EA) Accepted- Columbia (likely- science research fellow)

[/ul]General Comments: This process is so random. Probably going to Columbia, which was always higher on my list than U of C. Honestly I am really surprised. After the LL i thought uchicago would take me too, but I don’t really fit the idiosyncracy of chicago as much i would like to think so.

friend of mine got accepted with a 27 (Unsure of what GPA was)

There’s just not as much opportunity to compete for these in Germany/Europe. Awards at our age aren’t such a big deal as in the states (not wanting to touch on any clich

And by “why I really want to go there”, I obviously also mean reasons as to why Chicago is a good, if not the best FIT, in terms of the Core, critical thinking, school ideology, etc…
