Better than a rejection I s’pose, but I have been lazy all my life and feel that had I truly applied myself things would probably have turned out differently :/. Is there any data/info available for this year’s waitlist?

[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Who knows, I was deferred then waitlisted and I’m angry about it.
[ *] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? I got accepted at Georgetown (Early Action) and Swarthmore (with a likely letter/early write). I’m still waiting on the Ivies.
[ /list]
[ b]General Comments:[ /b] I’m a little irritated that I didn’t get in, but not too surprised. Chicago was probably my 6th or 7th choice and I’m sure the Adcoms could tell. That said, I guess I’m glad I didn’t take any ones spot who really wants to go there. Also, all you waitlisters will be happy to know I’m gonna take my name off the list as soon as possible. Good luck to everyone as the college admissions process comes to a close, and I just hope this doesn’t mean more of these are to come from Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, and UPenn.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] ACT: 32 (35e, 29m, 34r, 28s, 8 on the essay)

[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 38/312 (12% ish)

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nothing national, but some nice local stuff (e.g. rotary student of the month)

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Journalism (Editor-in-Chief), Theatre (13 plays by end of high school including acting, teching, writing, and directing), Drama Club (VP), Outdoor School (Student Leader/counselor 3x), Teen Council at library (since 4th grade)
[] Job/Work Experience: Counselor at Operation Purple Camp for two summers, server at a food cart for a little bit during sophomore year
[] Volunteer/Community service: Music in the Schools - nonprofit that raises money for public school music programs (President 2yrs), PDX Pop Now! - supports local music
[] Essays: Common app was about Music in the Schools and working on being a leader; UChic extended essay was two types of people - those who belong in Portland and those who don’t (you can read it on the Post Your Essay thread); Why UChic was pretty standard, but with good reasons; I wrote about Harry Potter being a major piece of my childhood for the one about favorite books (my mom thinks it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written)
[] Teacher Recommendation: The one I saw was really nice and the other said really nice things to my mom at conferences, so I’m sure she wrote a great one.
[] Counselor Rec: I didn’t see it but my principal did and told me it was great.
[li] Interview: The worst of the six I did - it was like 20 minutes and he barely asked me any questions and told me UChic has 2000 undergrad…
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Psychology
[] State (if domestic applicant): Oregon
[] School Type: Public, urban, 1400+ students
[] Ethnicity: did not report
[] Gender: Female
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nothing besides extracurriculars.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Extracurriculars, difficulty of courses taken, essays
[] Weaknesses: Test scores, two Bs during 2nd semester junior year (one was from a .25 credit course taken outside of school hours) in addition to two from frosh year
[] Why you think you were waitlisted: Because of the huge increase in applications, which featured many students interested in the humanities
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Accepted to Willamette EA (safety), waitlisted at WashU
[/ul]

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2310 (M: 750, CR: 770, W: 790)
[] ACT: n/a

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): French Club President, Varsity Tennis, High School Bowl, Newspaper Editor, Political Club
[] Job/Work Experience: Library Aide / Sales Associate
[] Volunteer/Community service: Nothing major
[] Summer Activities: Work, Travel (with Family)
[] Essays: Common App Essay (9) - my best one; not awesome but written well, albeit a trite subject of diversity
Find X (7): It was alright; algebra and pirates. Just made it humorous because I thought they would like that.
Why Chicago (6): Generic, and a typo
Favorite Things: Varied, I guess, lol
[] Teacher Recommendation: Have to assume they were great. French teacher’s was excellent.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor loves me so I’m sure awesome.
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[li] Interview: n/a
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Marketing (other intendedes were Literature and French so maybe they liked the variety)
[] State (if domestic applicant): CT
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Venezuelan (Dual-Citizenship)
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: $50,000-$60,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM. I’m sure this was a big deal, although I don’t really think it should be. Can’t complain though.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT Scores, URM, some essays
[] Weaknesses: Other essays, lack of community service
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: URM and I think I write decently enough. Not too many kids from New England either in the class profile. That was probably big too.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Got accepted into Cornell, McGill, UCONN, Brandeis, and UVM. Waiting on Stanford.
[/ul]
General Comments: UChicago and Cornell are pretty equal in my mind. Can’t wait to visit them!
Also, WOWW at all the Waitlisted. Good luck and surprised there are so many. Maybe they want a bit of extra time to review applications or something, but there seems to be a disproportionately large amount of Waitlisters.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2360
[] ACT: Did not take.
[] SAT II: 770, 800, 800
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.94
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school does not rank
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): four 5s; one 4.
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: 5 APs + 1 regular class. No sciences.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing major major but I’ve won a ton of writing contests.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Mostly creative writing and math stuff, with three leadership positions.
[] Job/Work Experience: None.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Stuff at school–tutoring, etc.
[] Summer Activities: Was this even in the application? Anyway, Iowa Young Writers’ Studio, community service in 3rd World, vacation…
[] Essays: Probably–no, definitely–the best part of my application. Incredibly personal (note that by this I don’t mean soul-divulging, but rather they could REALLY only have been written by me), really related to the whole ethos of UChicago. I think they could see how much I love the school.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Haven’t seen them, though of course I’d assume they’re pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor is in charge of 500 students. When I told her I got a likely letter from Columbia, she congratulated me and informed me that it meant I had “a good chance” of getting in. She didn’t seem to realize its significance as far as other college admissions decisions go, either. That being said, she seemed to like me–so, not very personal, but generically nice/good.
[] Additional Rec: Did not submit.
[] Interview: My interviewer left me a voicemail–which I did not check until THREE WEEKS later. So, yeah, that was kinda a major f**-up moment for me… But the interview itself went pretty well, and I guess no one minded! :D

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Why does this even matter? But yes.
[] Intended Major: Don’t remember. Something humanities.
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Public Magnet
[] Ethnicity: Jewish. AKA white.
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: Fairly high.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nope.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: The essays. For sure. I have pretty nice stats, too. But I think mostly they could just tell I’d be a really excellent fit.
[] Weaknesses: Interview? Perhaps counselor’s rec, though I doubt they held that against me.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Once again, my essays really displayed my passion for and excitement about the school.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going?
Accepted: Columbia (likely), Williams (early write), USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCSD. Waiting on HYPS, Amherst, Pomona, Scripps (might get merit $$$) and some other schools I don’t really care about at this point. I honestly have no idea how I’m gonna make this decision, but I’m glad to have so many choices.
[/ul]
General Comments: If you really feel like you’d be a great fit at UChicago, your essays should reflect that–be quirky, be expressive, be yourself (cliche, I know, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad advice), be UChicago. I had my father look over all my other essays for grammatical errors, issues with content/phrasing, etc. He read my UChicago essays but we both agreed I shouldn’t change them. I had a fair number of purposeful run-ons (only do this if you KNOW what you’re doing; writing’s sort of my thing) and they were pretty stylistically unique. But definitively they were in MY voice.

For those waitlisted: I really hope you get in off the waitlist! But even if you don’t, I’m sure you’ll have many excellent options/choices, and wind up happy no matter where you go. Same goes for people rejected. One of my best friends was waitlisted and another were rejected. I have the utmost respect for them and think they are both really smart, talented individuals. And they had pretty damn good apps too. Sometimes adcoms make mistakes. They’re men, not gods. Just remember that. And good luck! :)
[ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[] Strengths: transcript, extracurriculars, essays, interview…basically everything was awesome except for test score.
[] Weaknesses: f**ing 31 :frowning: if any future applicants are reading this, if you have time, go study for your act/sat. i think it can help a lot.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: test score. i didn’t read details of those who posted on cc, but it looks like everyone with the 2300+ got accepted and those below didn’t :frowning:
i’m not sure i was a “100% fit” at uchicago; i think other schools i applied to probably fit me better, but i just really wanted to be accepted to such a prestigious school. i was so certain i would be accepted, but 2 people from my school were accepted ea, so maybe that’s why.

[] Job/Work Experience: Unpaid internship with state senator since Summer 2009
[] Volunteer/Community service: 200+ hours with Key Club, 100+ hours with NHS
[] Summer Activities: Tried to write a novel.
[] Essays: Commonapp essay was very personal and well-written, about communism/government indoctrination of political philosophies. The Why UChicago and Find X essays were very rushed and sloppy. I wrote the first about wanting a rigorous yet not-too-serious college experience, and the second about secrets.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was glowing but impersonal, the other was positive but full of personality and anecdotes
[] Counselor Rec: Good, but impersonal

[] Job/Work Experience: Ran school store for the last 2 years
[] Volunteer/Community service: Went to Guatemala last summer, built stuff, volunteered for local congressman’s reelection
[] Summer Activities: Chess, classes, see above
[] Essays: Probably subpar by Chicago’s standards. I wrote them fairly straightforwardly and didn’t spend too much time.
[] Teacher Recommendation: both 9+/10
[] Counselor Rec: Fairly specific I guess

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: interest, essays
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Accepted: CWRU, UMBC. Rejected: MIT
[/ul]
General Comments: Lame. I really like the school. A second rejection this week hurts. I have 3 bullets left: Tufts, Columbia (deferred ED) and Stanford (pipe dream). Otherwise, CWRU with 20k merit.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 770CR, 680M, (770W)

[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutor at Neighborhood House Association Tutoring Center (once a week), Founder of MISC (Musicians In Support against Cancer) Benefit Concert – raised over $2000 for Seattle Cancer Care Alliance
[] Summer Activities: Work and volunteering
[] Essays: Personal Statement was probably my strongest. It discussed my dad’s mental illness and used the metaphor of the seasons of the river in my backyard…it’s difficult to explain, but it was really honest and I wrote what I knew. I’m really proud of it. My Chicago essay was decent. I used the two types of people prompt and wrote about fiddlers and violinists. I discussed my experiences in fiddling and classical music and how I’ve sort of merged the styles together and become a better musician as a result. It was written frankly and concisely (and was neither quirky nor profound), but it was insightful I think on the influence music has had on me. Why Chicago was stereotypical, but once again I didn’t go all “quirky” – except for the intro – I was honest as to why I really felt Chicago was a good fit. I wrote a list of my top 10 most influential books (including The Giver, Stellaluna – yes a picture book, HP, Fahrenheit 451, etc)

[/ul][ b]Reflection**[ul]
[] Strengths: CR score on SAT, GPA, work experience, personal statement
[] Weaknesses: Math score on SAT, extracurriculars, other essays, lack of interview/hook
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, no idea! I am shocked because I didn’t think Chicago would love my essays or my math score on the SAT. However, I guess staying true to my writing style & myself paid off.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? UCLA, UW, deferred to Columbia…definitely trying to go to Chicago if I don’t get into Columbia or Penn, and I’m torn on what I would do if I got into Barnard.

General Comments: I had to check my decision THREE separate times AND print it out before I truly believed it.

[] Teacher Recs: One of them was awesome and the other I didn’t get to see, but I had a great relationship with that teacher a trust that she wrote it well
[] Counselor Rec: At our school we get a new counselor every year so she didn’t know me that well =/
[] Additional Rec: Had my mentor from my volunteer/internship write one and it was most likely excellent
[li] Interview: I thought it was one of my best interviews. The interviewer was really geeky like me so everything went great and accidentally ended up talking for almost two hours
[/li]

[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

[] State (if domestic applicant): Oregon

[] Ethnicity: Asian (Korean)
[] Gender: Male
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): n/a
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores and grades were good and I took almost every AP class at my school. Having a varsity sport likely helped as well, but my biggest thing was probably my lab experience
[] Weaknesses: ECs in general were fairly weak and I only had two subject tests
[li] Why you think you were waitlisted: I think the biggest thing may have been my subject tests, and possibly my lack of strong ECs[/li][/ul]
General Comments:
Congrats to everyone who got in. Good luck to everyone waitlisted. Hope you get into another great school for those rejected. I’m just glad the process is over, to be honest.

[] Senior Year Course Load: above
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):I don’t really have any… unless you count minor awards like distinctions/high distinctions in national maths/science competitions or National Merit Commended. I don’t think these small awards have anything to do with the acceptance.
[/li]
[ b]Subjective:**[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Sound/Lighting Management, Flute, Choir, Fencing
[] Job/Work Experience: I sang in a Christmas choir one summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: St John’s Ambulance, School Library and school archives
[] Summer Activities: Umm… work shadowing at a research centre, researching for my EE, summer course on human evolution and a few minor activities that I cannot remember off the top of my head
[li] Essays: My common app essay is about my experiences in Australia and Hong Kong and how those experiences influenced my Identity[/li]My Why Chicago essay was rather generic and standard- I talked about how I want to learn for the sake of learning (which is true, but I think many UChicago applicants would put down similar things)
My supplementary essay was about how I think there are two types of people in the world: us and “the other”, and how I gradually realized it isn’t that appropriate to put people into two different groups. The content was good… but I realized afterward that because I submitted everything in a hurry, there were some typos and grammar mistakes that I over-looked…

[] Teacher Recommendation: Should be quite good

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I’m not sure whether I have any. My SATI and SATII scores are quite good but that’s probably common within the applicant pool. I guess my background is pretty unique
[] Weaknesses: No significant leadership positions or awards, the grammar mistakes and typos in my supplementary essay (I am quite angry at myself!)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Other than the above reasons, I guess fit probably played a large role for a college like UChiacgo Perhaps the adcoms didn’t fill I am the “right” type of person for UChicago
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? It’s kind of funny because my decisions have been coming to me in a weird sort of pattern… I was wait-listed by WashU after being accepted by URochester, and wait-listed by UChiacgo after being accepted by MIT. If this pattern continues, I hope my Stanford decision will come next. xD I am still waiting for 11 more colleges… (applied to 15 in total)

[] Essays: Well, I wrote the supplement day of, but I had been thinking it through for months so I guess it came out okay. It was really rough around the edges, but one of my rents glanced at it, and actually found it kind of interesting. My commonapp was more polished, but far less interesting. My Why Chicago essay was one of the few I liked, personal, flattering to them, but true.

[li] Teacher Recommendation: I didn’t see either, but my Calc teacher wrote one, and he’s someone who really believes in his students, and liked me, so it was probably pretty good. My English teacher wrote the other, and he gets asked to write tons each year, but I felt like I’d really shown my best side in that class and he knew me well, so I think it was good.
[/li]

[li] Counselor Rec: Well I’d only known my counselor for about a year, but she really tried to get to know me so I’m guessing it turned out well.
[/li]

[li] Additional Rec:
[/li]

[li] Interview: I know it doesn’t count for anything, but I had one and while I didn’t learn much about UChic (she had graduated in like '70) it went really well. We talked a ton and she got to know me better than the interviewers in some of my required interviews.
[/li]

[] Weaknesses: Essays

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really like UChic, and I think I’d be a good fit for what I saw there, and I tried to show that. I’m psyched to be accepted  My essays weren’t that strong generally I thought, but for their supp I tried to just write something that was interesting to me in the hopes they’d like it too, which I guess worked. I also come from a large public high school that carries a lot of cred with colleges regarding its educational standards, so that helped.
[/li]

[li] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? I’ve applied to a bunch but this is the first I’ve heard from. Guess I"ll wait and see.
[/li]
General Comments: Glad I’m in  This process seriously sucked, and I procrastinated hugely (which I would not recommend) but this is great. Still, I’ve had hugely qualified amazing friends waitlisted here/rejected other places. Its a really fickle process. Good luck to everyone!

General Comments:
Congratulations to all who were accepted! To those waitlisted or rejected, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel! I was rejected from Columbia ED and felt pretty awful about it, but now I feel that it might have been better for me. And even if you don’t get the result that you want, college admissions is really, really subjective. Some of it is definitely based on luck; the process is oftentimes unfair and unpredictable. You’re still who you were yesterday despite the decision. Don’t let random admissions people change how you see yourself. If you ever need someone to talk to feel free to message me. I say this because my best friends supported me when I was at my lowest point this year, and it was immensely helpful.
