[] ECs listed on app: cross country, newspaper staff, violin player, frosh adviser, baseball manager, erstwhile swimmer
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Essays (subject and responses):
1) Why Chicago? – typical gushing
2) Influential book, poem, etc. – wrote about Walter Wangerin Jr.’s The Book of the Dun Cow and what I admire in children’s literature
3) I wrote my own prompt:

**Prior to 1983, the Roman Catholic Church included two lawyers in its canonization process: one called the advocatus dei--God’s advocate, and one called the advocatus diaboli--the Devil’s advocate. The advocatus dei’s job was the defend the prospective saint’s canonization, citing the saint’s good works and dedication to God. The advocatus diaboli opposed this lawyer and argued against the canonization, discrediting the saint’s holiness, seeking out flaws in the saint’s character, and bringing to light every reason the saint should not be a saint.

You stand for admission to the University of Chicago. Your teachers’ recommendations, school record, interview, earlier essays, and unwavering love for the university are your advocatus dei. Now provide the other side of the story. Be your own Devil’s advocate.**

[] Teacher Recs: haven’t seen them. Good, but probably fairly generic
[] Counselor Rec: very solid
[] Applied on: September 24
[] Hook (if any): My essay. I hoped that guts would be appealing.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Indiana

[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Sigh Well, that’s it, folks. Congrats to those who got in.

I should also add that I took a huge risk on my major essay (accepted).

The first two I really tried to express myself and especially to the type of community that Chicago was, and I felt like I really imbued a sense of passion in them.

I didn't even write my major essay in essay form at all.

Was excied to get in, but I got into Penn on Friday ED so I mean it didnt really matter to me. I wish Penn were EA so I could choose between the two schools (both are amazing) but when I applied ED to Penn I knew what I was getting into. I'm still happy that I got in.

OK I suck and can't be bothered to properly format it but here are my stats from my Columbia deferral lol

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT:2280 (760 per section)
SAT IIs: 760 Math II, 720 US History :/
GPA: weighted, after 1st marking period of senior year, 4.0017 :/ I don't want to know what it is unweighted...
Rank: my school doesn't officially rank but I'd assume top 15% if not top 10%? I was top 5% before senior year happened lol.
AP Scores:
Calc AB - 4
Stats - 5
Calc BC - 4, AB Subscore 5
Enviro Sci - 5
US History - 4 :/
APs currently taking: Latin Language, Gov, Econ (micro+macro), will take English Lit AP but not taking the class (long story lol)
Subjective:
Essays: I really liked it and 2 of my friends who are crazy good at English liked it (and helped me edit it), so I think it's pretty good...I wrote about feminism and libertarianism =D
Teacher Recs: I think both were awesome, I signed the waiver so that I can't see them, but the one from my Latin teacher (whom I've had for 4 years and is teaching me AP Latin right now; I want to major in Classics) was apparently so amazing that my counselor almost cried when she was describing how amazing it was to me, and my AP US teacher (also my Mock Trial coach of 4 years, so she obviously knows me very well) is reputed to write amazing recs.
Counselor Rec: Again, I haven't seen it, but I think it's very good, because she knows me pretty well and loves me and she apparently writes amazing recs, especially for people she knows.
Extracurriculars:
Mock Trial (4 years, a ridiculous amount of time per year)
Model UN (3 years, very little time per year lol)
Tennis (JV #1 Freshman year, Varsity 1st Doubles Sophomore year, out Junior year because of an injury D:, 1/2 as much time as Mock Trial)
Math League (Freshman year, back when I didn't suck at math lol)
Volunteer hours: composite of over 300 hours at 2 places (local hospital+museum)
Other
Location/Person:
School Type: Charter, ranked pretty high by USNAWR (Omg, will they start ranking middle schools next? Elementary schools? Daycares?), AP program
Ethnicity: Asian

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: This just sucks major butt. I fo sho thought I was gonna get into this place, since I've done a lot and have been recognized in my community. I thought I had great essays/teacher recs and everything, and I can't help but wonder what the reasoning was behind my decision. I guess I'm disappointed because I have to wait until April, and I'm nervous because I actually thought this school would be my safety-so how am I going to fare with these other colleges if I can't even get in here? Gahh. I think I'll eat my sorrows away.

If anyone wants to talk about their decision and just sulk like a baby, its totally ok, message me.

pinkfire- why retake your exams? I got lower scores than you (except for SAT, just got a tad bit higher) and I got in.

I'm not saying I'm better (I have no idea how I got in lol), but maybe you need to put a little more you in the app? Not just test score, but find a way to send a supplement, or improve your essay?
