****Official University of Chicago Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Happy you were accepted.
Most likely going to UC.
Good luck to you.

I don’t know if you guys remember, but I find it kind of funny how @Zieggy and @vesperan were missing their financial aid documents and I was the only one to suggest that they were accepted but no one believed me…I guess I was right! XD hahahah congrats to you both!

Rejected. 2 for 3 now.

@Vesperan No idea, you?

Not sure yet either. I’m waiting on financial aid and transfer credit evaluation information. I only applied to uchicago, so my decision is between it and my current school.

@Iza2019 @Zieggy @Vesperan Congrats to all of you!

(I’m posting this mostly for any transfers next year who look through old threads.)

Here’s some post-acceptance information:

Housing - transfers get priority housing choice over incoming first years. You’re also not required to live in on-campus housing, unlike the first years. Transfers aren’t all housed together, they’re scattered based on what they choose.

Financial aid - transfer applications don’t get reviewed for merit aid, though if you’re a national merit or national hispanic scholar (as I am) it seems as though you can still get the $4000 if you talk to them about it directly and prove you were awarded those awards. Also, if you don’t get a financial aid package with your acceptance letter or immediately after, /talk to the financial aid office/! They had one thing wrong on my form that was stopping my fafsa from being connected to my account, so I just got my aid package now–a week before the decision deadline. Keep pestering them until you get it, if you need to.

Transfer credit - you can’t get an official evaluation of transfer credit before the June 1st deadline, but the people in the advising office are really helpful. I visited and talked to an advisor on call, (not even the transfer-specific one), and she gave me basically all the information I needed. It’s good to go into that sort of meeting with a general sketch of what you think your transfer credit will be, as well as specific questions. That way they can tell you where your thinking is correct and where you’re way off.

Miscellaneous - you get an admissions packet with some pretty pictures of the college and an official certificate of acceptance. You probably won’t get swag (scarves, hats, t-shirts, etc). Luckily, you will apparently get plenty of free stuff at O-week. There also aren’t transfer-specific regional new student get-togethers–which makes sense, since there’s only 20-30 of us per year–and you miss all the ones for first year students. You can go to send-off parties, though, which are later in the summer. Also, you can get added to the freshman class facebook group, but there isn’t an official transfer group. We’re considered part of the class of (in my case) 2020 at first.

(Assuming I go), I’ll try to make one more post in a few months with information about O-Week, the start of Fall Quarter, finalized credit and aid, and other general transition information. If any future transfer applicants want advice/encouragement/ sympathy/answers to questions, message me and I’ll help however I can. I’d also be up for critiquing essays, if anyone wanted that. I won’t be on CC super frequently, but I will check in occasionally.

“Housing - transfers get priority housing choice over incoming first years. You’re also not required to live in on-campus housing, unlike the first years. Transfers aren’t all housed together, they’re scattered based on what they choose.”
that is excellent news and is far different from what my DS experienced 10 years ago!

Yep, Stony is no longer the transfer dorm.

Has anyone decided to transfer to UChicago for the fall?

Yep! I committed Monday. I’m super excited about it.

(And, as I said in my last post, I’ll update occasionally with information that might be helpful to future transfers.)

@Vesperan Congratulations on you Uchicago admission. Do u mind share with me where did you transfer from? Which sch? thx

@Vesperan Cool me too! I’m very excited about it.
