****Official University of Chicago Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Don’t know if this is too early not but thought I’d start it.

Post your stats, or don’t, or whatever’s on your mind if you’re considering a fall transfer. Good luck to all of you!

HS: 3.2 GPA, 2180 SAT
Excellent EC’s: leadership spots, “real world” experience: general field being social studies/civics.

College: B1G 4.0 current / assume best and 4.0 next semester; projected 38 credit hours by the end of the year.
EC’s are pretty strong in the same fields, and other campus-wide activity involvement. Can get 2 good faculty recs.

My concern is just high school grades since I am applying as a rising sophomore.

Chance me (or don’t), post your thoughts.

Bump…now surely I’m not the only Fall 2016 transfer applicant who browses CollegeConfidential!

HS: 96% gpa, 2190 sat, pretty good EC Though not as important because I’ve been in college 2 yrs

College: Service work on point, 3.8(maybe 3.9 after rest of my grades come in) GPA with REALLY tough classes including graduate classes, honors program, amazing letters of rec and a few solid essay drafts and a great personal statement.

I’ve been in college two years now – do I need to retake the SATs or do subject tests?

@exclamationse7en no. so, why uchicago? your major/etc

@nighthawk4 humanities - They have departments I want to study in that my school doesn’t have. Also, more interdisciplinary work between departments. I actually love the idea of a core curriculum because my school’s gen eds are a joke and I want to actually learn about stuff outside my major.

Also, I love the house system! My friend there says it’s great. How about you?

How is everyone’s application going along so far LOL

Do we have to resubmit sat scores?

look at the instructions
its all there

Thanks!

I have a question: Aren’t the third supplement (why do you leave your current school) the same thing as the commonapp essay?

In a sense, yes!
Honestly, just try to elaborate more on why you’d want to leave.

Ummm…it’s probably late but I was wondering if anyone could chance me of getting into UChicago?

School: UC Davis (I’m from the Bay Area…)

I’m currently a freshman so if I were to be admitted I’d enter as a second year/sophomore

College GPA: 3.9-4.0 (Part of Dean’s List)

College Major: English Literature with an emphasis in Creative Writing

HS GPA: I think overall it was like 3.7-3.8, but I was in the top 7%

SAT/ACT Scores: 25 ACT, no SAT…

APs: 3 for AP Calc AB, 3 for Psychology, 3 for English Lit, and 4 for Gov

Significant ECs: Umm I volunteer on a weekly basis, I’m also part of Photo Club (board member) and Ballroom Dance Team

Hooks: Latina/Arab, underprivileged family, went through hardships because my father had cancer…
Umm I love writing, and have been published twice in the past year (two poems published in a teen literary magazine, and I also published my flash fiction in an international literary magazine in Canada, and that magazine had an international competition and I won third prize in the flash fiction category). I also participated a national competition (based in the Bay Area) and won first prize in the “nonfiction” category. I was very recently offered to do an internship in Europe for a publishing company, but I’m not sure if I’m going yet because of the money LOL…
Umm, I’m going to send Chicago a writing supplement and some photography (I do still-life in my spare time)

Yeah…I know it’s a competitive school, but it’s my first choice…last year as a senior I was waitlisted…I know it’s very hard to get in as a transfer, but what do you guys think? I’d personally love to go to Chicago, but I also want to make sure I have atleast some chance…

Not expecting much at all with the acceptance rate around 1-2%, but I figure that’s more of a chance than I’d have if I didn’t apply at all.

College:
College GPA: 4.00/4.00 over 53 credits
English major and Classics minor
Currently at a university ranked around #50

HS:
I had a dual curriculum where half of my day was spent on normal subjects (math, English, etc) and half on Jewish subjects (Gemara, Mishnah, and a lot more that everyone here probably hasn’t heard of  ).
Secular Studies GPA: 5.07/4.30 W and 3.99/4.00 UW
Jewish Studies GPA: 3.97/4.30 W and 3.86/4.00 UW (shows upward trend every semester)
School did not offer any AP classes – I self studied for English Lit and got a 4.
I was accepted to my current university through an Early Admissions program, which let me skip 12th grade. So I only went to high school for 3 years.

SAT: 2220 (770 CR, 760 W, 690 M)
ACT: 32 (36 E, 34 CR, 32 M, 27 S)
Did not take SAT Subject Tests ever

College Extracurriculars:
Reporter for School Newspaper, Internship at the Mayor’s Office in a Nearby City, Paid Peer Tutor at the University, On the Committee for Programming at the Hillel on Campus, Member of University’s Grievance Committee, Note-Taker for Office of Disabilities at the University, Coach for a Little League Sports Team on Sundays, Social Director for the Condo I Live in, Founding Member of University’s Classics Table, Founding Member of University’s Fantasy Sports Club

Recommendations: Two in my major and one from my calculus professor of two semesters. All three of the professors know me well, so I think they’re strong.

SAT/ACT Scores: 25 ACT, no SAT…

APs: 3 for AP Calc AB, 3 for Psychology, 3 for English Lit, and 4 for Gov

these are way too low for Chicago. They are probably the reason you were WL last year. I wouldnt bother applying again.
sorry

@menloparkmom, I’ve already applied last night…
Umm, yeah, my test scores are low, but in-between I’ve won those awards/publications, so wouldn’t Chicago see I’ve improved? LOL
What major are you, may I ask? Can I see your stats?

DS transfered in 2007, when it was a LOT less competitive.
His stats were SAT 2350 and all 5’s on 9 AP classes.
his College gpa was 3.75

Chicago is a really intensely academic college. More so than most colleges in the US.
A whole bunch of ECs and volunteer hrs will not make you a more viable applicant.

@menloparkmom Yeah, I know Chicago is very intensive, I visited the campus before.
Yeah, I have plenty of friends who go there so I know the school very well, thank you very much.
Who’s saying I’m one of those applicants that had a “whole bunch of ECs and volunteer hours?” LOL I’m pretty consistent with what I’m passionate about.
I’m not saying I’m going to get in, but I think I’ve improved a lot since last year, especially since I’ve won awards at both the national and international level…
If I got waitlisted last time without all that, I’d say my chances are currently higher than last year, at least fairly significantly LOL…

Only place I applied but know I’m not going to get in bc I did a shitty job of time management (as did I senior year).

But stats in case anyone’s interested:

School: Freshman at Top 20 (not that it means anything)

College GPA: 3.85, social science major

HS GPA: 4.0, top 3%

ACT: 36C (36E, 36M, 36R, 35S)

APs: a bunch of 5’s and 4’s

Significant ECs: In college some pretty cool unique things, HS quite a few leadership things but nothing particularly special. Two decent recs, one amazing rec

Awesome common app/uncommon essay, mediocre why UChi/why leaving essays. I wish I had more time to work on them, literally turned them in at 11:59 there might even be spelling errors. Oh well, definitely not going to be the 20/1000, but tried anyway.

Good luck to everyone!

@lza2019 You shouldn’t count yourself out! your grades, ACT, and ECs all really sound great! It’s a crapshoot, but I think your chances are as good as any of ours’.

Iza you’ve got a shot. It’s a shame you did not have more time with the why UChicago / why leaving essays. Those could have put over the top. But you may still get accepted. Good luck to you.
