-I spend a lot of time doing community service and all 3 essays showed it! I was afraid it was a bit too much, but it seems like Michigan liked it!
[] Weaknesses: SAT score, especially my CR… My SAT IIs are absolutely HORRIBLE, but my counselor told me to submit them anyway! I thought they were definitely going to get me rejected.

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first generation college
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT scores, GPA (I don’t care what anyone says, 3.7/4.0 isn’t low for ANY school), class rank, rigorous class course, and my overall high school academic career. I also had amazing recommendations from all 3 parties and a really great essay on community.
[ *] Weaknesses: My common app essay was good, but could’ve been better, and my “WHY UM” essay was very generic (I didn’t realize it was generic until someone told me two weeks down the line, otherwise, I would’ve rewritten it).
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Why do I think I was accepted? Fate. I prayed like machine. After all my life struggles, it’s just where I’m meant to be.
But on the objective/subjective side of things, my recommendations rocked and my academics killed it in almost all areas for a Black female from my region/school.

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
[] Job/Work Experience:
[] Volunteer/Community service:
[] Summer Activities:
[] Essays:
[] Teacher Recommendation: Multivariable Calculus. She’s my school’s senior math teacher, has been my math teacher since sophomore year, and has been teaching for more than three decades. Said I was among the most remarkable students she’s ever taught.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably decent, nothing out of this world.
[] Additional Rec: Didn’t send, I had one from my AP Physics teacher in case I got deferred
[] Interview: N/A

[] Country (if international applicant): Costa Rica
[] School Type: Very small (~50 students per class), private. I was the only EA applicant.
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic/Latino
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Not eligible for FA, but ~100,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Overcame clinical depression to the degree that I completely turned my life around – and wrote about it in my essays

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Standardized (math) test scores, number of APs taken,
[] Weaknesses: Suffered serious depression all of 2012, so I got terrible grades on my second semester of sophomore year and my first semester of junior year (even a D in AP English!! The horror… ahahaha). As a consequence, my GPA is terrible. Also, I didn’t do absolutely ANYTHING during the summers - proof that colleges don’t expect you to dedicate every living second to doing something. Finally, I didn’t have anything to vouch for my math/science skills besides test scores and recommendation letters… No research or STEM-related extracurriculars or anything of the sort.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I showed my true passion for my field, my recommendation letters were strong, and I was strong enough to overcome hardships and fight for what I want
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Michigan was my first decision! I’ll hear from Georgia Tech on January 4, and from all my dream schools in March/April.

[/ul]**General Comments: **
Guys, college admissions officers are people. Real people. They can empathize. They understand our hardships and don’t expect everyone to be superman. Just be sure to do what you love, be sure to sincerely TELL them that you love it, and be sure to fight for your dreams. Congratulations to all who were accepted - Go Blue!
