[/ul][ b]General Comments: ** SOOOOO excited! One more source of stress GONE!

Decision: Deferred - ENG

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2240 (770 M 680 CR 790 W)
[] SAT II: Math II (800) Chemistry (790) US History (760)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): My school does out of 100, about a 93 UW 96 W and strong senior grades
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Chemistry (5) Stats (5) APUSH (5) English Literature, Calc BC
[] Senior Year Course Load: School does block scheduling, at the time I sent my app out I had AP Calc full year, AP Lit full year, honors physics and Spanish, band, gym, transitions (had to take the gym credit and a filler)
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): couple of awards at my school, so nothing
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity soccer, varsity track (league all star), full year rec soccer, freshman and rec basketball, ping pong club, first chair oboe, MHS (group leader), NHS (officer), varsity math team, ski club one year
[] Job/Work Experience: Ice Cream Scooper, Soccer Ref
[] Volunteer/Community service: 45+ per year with NHS, 80 hours over a summer as an unpaid soccer camp counselor, youth group at church
[] Summer Activities: Camp counselor one year, two week engineering program at UMass Amherst, recovering from knee surgery :frowning:
[] Essays: Pretty meh, common app was about tearing my ACL and missing my junior season of soccer, but peresevering and sticking with the team as manager for the season, michigan supplements were pretty generic and clearly probably bad, considering I got deferred
[] Teacher Recommendation: Chem teacher who I had three times, probably quite good, one from my AP lit teacher, she’s a great writer, but we haven’t had much time together, so she didn’t have much to work with, but she made it work, my math teacher I had twice and math team coach, was probably pretty good
[li] Counselor Rec: Generic af
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):[] MA
[] School Type: Rural Public
[] Ethnicity: You know the jokes about seeing black people in the dark? Make it daytime, and I’m white. Boom. I’m gone.
[] Gender: Great day to be a white dude (except I got deferred)
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): 100k+
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): absolutely none
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Pretty well rounded app
[] Weaknesses: Totally essays, GPA could be better, SAT carried by my outlier writing score out of the three times I took it (got high 600s two of the three times I took it), didn’t really show a passion
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: cause I’m average and my supplements were generic and I’m OOS
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UMass honors, WPI, northeastern accepted

[/ul]**General Comments: ** I never realized how good of a school michigan was until about a week ago. I knew it was good, especially for the rep it has among the uninformed, but I was never worried about getting in until a week or two ago, and here we are now. Hell, my friend who got accepted ED to Cornell got deferred. I don’t think I took the app as seriously as I should’ve. Now I’m just wishing the MA state schools were as good as michigan so I could get that in-state hook. Guess it’s time to write all those other essays I have, and try to be less generic…

Also, my school is quite competitive for a public school, I heard a stat today that we’re in the 98th percentile

I have no idea why I was accepted! For those deferred, don’t worry. You still have a chance, just later. For those rejected, there’s a reason beyond your tests scores/ EC. You probably belong in another school anyway! Keep your head up! :)

I shouldn’t have applied to so many back up schools (yes, all 5 other schools were backups just in case I didn’t get into umich) that I knew I didn’t want to go to but I’m glad I got in to my top choice  no more stressing out about what to do if I don’t get in

[/ul]**General Comments: ** I’m Asian, middle-class, OOS who got 2 C+s in Chemistry sophomore year (no excuse). DON’T LOSE HOPE. I really thought those would be a deal-breaker at every school, but I was accepted over people with higher GPAs. Strong upper grade trend, strong essays, and passions count :)
