OFFICIAL University of Michigan Decision - Class of 2013

thanks ramen…I couldn’t have said it better myself…hopefully this year will not be as inconsistent…good luck to all…

ramennoodles, no admissions office is predictible. I was not referring to Michigan chosing some students over others based on perception. I am suremany 4.0 students with 26 ACT scores are chosen over 3.9 students with excellent SAT/ACT scores. That wsas the case, even when Michigan used its formula. Do you know that a 4.0 student with a 1250/28 on the SAT/ACT would get more points in Michigan’s old admissions formula than a 3.9 student with a 1600/36 SAT/ACT? Now Michigan obviously no longer uses that formula, but the University has never valued standardized testing. Michigan always relies more on GPA and class rank. That explains why close to 95% of Michigan’s latest class graduated in the top 10% of their class and the mean unweighed GPA for this year’s Freshman class was over 3.8. Michigan does not really care about standardized test scores, which explains why the mean SAT/ACT score of Michigan freshmen was roughly 1330/29 instead of 1400/30. That does not mean that a student with a 1000/22 on the SAT/ACT will get in, but a student with an excellent academic record could get into Michigan with a 25-27 on the ACT or a 1200-1300 on the SAT.

But I was not referring to the above. I was referring to a more basic concept. Generally speaking, a sub 3.5 student does not get into LSA or Engineering. There are exceptions of course (applicants from elite private high schools, students with exception gifts, applicants with a unique and extremely rare background etc…), but it is very rare.

We didn’t talk about high school grades a lot, but yea I don’t recall knowing anyone who I had the discussion with, who had sub-3.5 GPA. I’m 100% positive that they do look at the full picture, and not just a “numbers” school, but it’s pretty rare to get in with a 3.1, I’m sure it happens, but from what I’ve seen they’ll tolerate a lower SAT/ACT, but usually not lower grades like that. but whatever, he/she got in, must have had something they liked.

Alexandre I agree with you, and I suggest you read my full post.

However, I just don’t see how you could justify how someone with a 26 ACT and a 4.0 GPA in a weaker schedule with far fewer AP’s is better than someone with a 31 ACT and a 3.9 GPA.

^also not sure how anyone justifies a 3.8 GPA with a 15-20% class rank over a student with a 3.7 GPA with a 5% class rank…even if they don’t care about standardized tests…

I honestly think that it all comes down to that one number (UM GPA) unless there’s a hook or a really good story…

Never mind the fact that last year, students with less rigorous schedules but higher UM GPA’s were more successful…

I don’t think it is that straight forward. One cannot assume that a student is better than another simply by looking at scores. I scored well over 1500 (out of 1600) on my SAT. My sisters barely broke the 1000 mark. It is clear and undisputed in my family that my sisters are better students. There are many variables to consider. Family background, holding a full time job to help with the bills, coming from an underprvileged socio-economic background, etc… And there are many hooks that we may not see. Such as writing a great essay, excellent teacher recs, a special gift (athletic, artistic etc…). I learned long ago never to compare myself to anybody. ANYBODY. It is impossible to compare oneself to another. There are simply too many variables to consider. Now, don’t get me wrong. I am sure Michigan admissions commits hundreds of brain farts each year. But out of 30,000 applicantions, that’s to be expected.

Honestly, the only one I would agree with that you stated is socio-economic privilege along with URM, recruited athlete, and a few very rare situations other then that if someone has far superior stats to a lesser student and the lesser student gets in over the superior student, in my mind the lesser student either got really lucky, has inside connections, or bought their way into Michigan.

congrats captain falcon

does anyone know when the next set of decision letters will be sent out?

I think they do one of the following:

1) Release results weekly
or
2) Release results after x amount of applications have been reviewed

From what I know, if you submitted ur apps in early october or even in september, you should be getting ur results soon (some people have already heard from them actually). If you submitted ur app around mid-Oct, expect the results to come out in 2-3 more weeks.

^Last year, if early appliers were borderline candidates, many didn’t hear until December 21st…and many were deferred…even if they applied in late September or early October.

oh no…I don’t want to have to wait until December! i submitted late September, but I’m afraid i’m going to be ~borderline~ because my GPA is a 3.7. I hope my high ACT makes up for it…

My wolverine access has my application date as 10/28

When should I expect to get a decision?

bumping this thread

i sent in my online app on 10/30 and had the counseling office mailed in my rec and transcript around 10/15, but my wolverline access has my application date as 11/03. Should i email them, since i wont be considered Early Response? Or it doesnt matter at all?
