DEFERRED TO CAS. WILL BUY A "PUCK FENN" SHIRT TODAY!!!
BUT, ACCEPTED TO UMICH IN ANN ARBOR WITH A $60,000 MERIT SCHOLARSHIP (NOT FINANCIAL AID, BUT MERIT MONEY)!!!!!!
STATS:

SAT: 2150/V 700/M 720/ W 740 (11 on essay)
SAT II:
770 and 750
3 AP's..all scores of 5 (in junior year); 3 ap's in senior year
GPA: 3.7
School doesn't rank
Hooks: URM and legacy
Recs: SUPERB
ESSAY: Extrememly well done
Location: NY
EC'S: LOTS of volunteer work in my community; job; study abroad for 2 summers;
LEAD SUMMER BUSINESS INSTITUTE; AND MUCH MORE
Very good private school that sends many to the Ivy's
Reason for deferral: Penn accepted 4 other kids from my school: one recruited athlete; 2 who are geniuses with accomplishments that are amazing, and are also legacies...in other words, maybe the took in too many from my school ED.

The nerve of PENN! Apparently they accepted a kid from a different school in my area who was arrested for drunk driving in Oct. I don't think he got convicted yet, but he is a football player and according to school rules, he got benched for the season and couldn't play. I guess Penn likes drunks.

I am going out now to buy one of those "Puck Fenn" t-shirts.

$60,000 SCHOLARSHIP TO the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN!!!!!!
SCREW PENN. I DON'T THINK I'LL GO NOW IF THEY COME BEGGING IN APRIL!!

^now Just Because You Did Not Get In Does Not Mean You Should Bash Penn Like That.....am Pretty Sure Before You Got Deffered You Were Shouting Praises To Penn....and Plus You Ought To Be Greatful Atleast You Did Not Get Rejected...you Got "deffered" Chill Dude Chilllllllll

man dont worry about it so much. you got deferred, as did i. if you still wanna go to penn, you have plenty of time to reverse that deferral. but if umich is for you, than gluck there too, i got accepted there as well, but i havnt found out about any merit scholarships (as i probably dont deserve one :()

its penn for me though, i know im going to get in!

General Comments/Congratulations/etc:

I can't freaking wait. But also, ED is great because now senior year can actually be fun, like it's supposed to be. Yay everyone who got in!

for anyone who feels bad about being rejected, chances are there were a lot more people rejected who just aren't posting. so don't let the odd ratio get to you.

So here it goes...accepted to the College

Stats:
SAT Verbal: 760
SAT Math: 670
SAT Writing:700
SAT Total:2130
(definitely not my forte)

SAT II: 790 USH, 710 Lit
ACT:
AP/IB taken/scores: EURO and APUSH both 5's
GPA weighted:
GPA unweighted:
Rank or % estimate: Top 4 percent

Subjective:
Essays: Pretty good. I was pretty disheartened when our admissions rep said that the essays didn't matter as much; I really saw them as my only chance. My editors thought it was actually fun to read while saying something about me, take that as you will.
Teacher Recs: I asked my two fav teachers, hopefully good reviews!
Counselor Rec: I've probably seen her four times in my life (there's one counselor for every 600 students.)
Hook (if any): coming from a criminally underfunded, extremely diverse public school

Location/Person:
State or Country: SF Bay Area, CA
School Type: Low Quality Suburban/Urban Public
Ethnicity: White and Asian (declared)
Gender: M
Legacy Yes/No: N
Recruited Yes/No: N
Important ECs: I founded a school newspaper, involved with leadership and tutoring, interned for a drug rehab (400 + hours), and lived in China for a month.

Other Factors:
I have no idea. Looking at everyone else it's clear that college admissions continue to be a frustratingly random process. My interview kind of sucked too, so I thought I was doomed. There aren't a lot of NorCal/Oregon people here, and I got to meet our admissions officer and hopefully force some kind of impression on him. I also researched the hell out of Penn for my Why Penn essay and the professor one. Maybe they pulled through.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc:

I definitely need a vaccine for Senioritis. Congraulations to everyone, can't wait for September.

*Deferred CAS: *

[] Teacher Recs: One was excellent the other was probably very very good
[] Counselor Rec: Doubt it was anything special

[/ul]Other Factors: Out of 16 that applied from my school, 4 legacies and 1 non-legacy were accepted.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: Congrats to the acceptees! However I think that Penn is doing itself a disservice by allowing legacy status to overshadow much of the application, but hey thats life! I really hope I get into Cornell or Georgetown!!
