Decision: Rejected: College of Arts and Sciences

Stats:
SAT Verbal: 800
SAT Math: 740
SAT Writing: 800 (ESSAY: 12)
SAT Total: 2340
SAT II: 800 US History; 770 Physics, 740 Lit
ACT: N/A
AP taken/scores: US History-5, Physics-5, English Language-5, Human Geography-5, Calc AB-4, European History-4. (currently enrolled in AP Chemistry, AP English Literature, and AP Calc BC)

GPA weighted: 3.85 (our school weights really lightly, and my freshman gpa was comparatively low...my sophmore and junior gpa is slightly over a 4.0)
GPA unweighted: probably around a 3.75
Rank or % estimate: school doesn't rank. I know I'm in the top third, because I have distinguished honors, and slightly less than the top third has that. Ranking at our school is kind of meaningless, though, because my class has 35 students and it's a college prep school.

Subjective:
Essays: I've been told that they were excellent. My writing skills are generally respected...a lot of people in my class have asked for my help in writing their essays.

Teacher Recs: Awesome. Both teachers sought me out and asked to write my recs
Counselor Rec: Our councelor tries to write everyone a good rec, and I think he likes me from his involvement outside of the college guidance office, but I suppose I don't really have any idea what he wrote.
Hook (if any): Community service, performing arts involvement, legacy

Location/Person:
State or Country: PA
School Type: Private Catholic Prep.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Legacy Yes/No: Yes. My mom and dad went there, along with my grandfather, grandmother, great grandmother, and two aunts.
Recruited Yes/No: No
Important ECs: A ton of service stuff at school church and through other orgs., musical, drama, two choirs, jazz band, JV XC/winter track/track

Other Factors: Well, despite having TWO excellent interviews (one for legacies only, and one of the alumni interviews...the alumni interviewer one lasted for two hours and ended with him saying "well, I'm pretty sure you'll get in.") several meetings with faculty members, a long family legacy, very good SAT scores, a ton of extracurricular involvement, and grades that are at least on par with other people I know who were accepted without those things, I was rejected. Can't really explain why.

[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/etc:[ /b] Penn has a rather bad relationship with my school. Two years ago, 10 of the top 15 kids in the class applied, none were accepted. The local admissions rep refuses to visit our school, despite visiting every neighboring school, and despite the fact that our school has one of the highest average SAT scores in the state. When I first got my rejection, I was disappointed, but understanding. Since then, however, I have talked to some of my friends and have seen who got in, and now I'm left kind of confused and annoyed. That said, I've pretty much gotten over it...there are plenty of other good colleges out there, and I'll find one who wants to have me.

wow i cant believe u didn't get in

^ id be plssed

double legacy, stellar applicant and ed reject...that's pretty shocking.

sorry you didnt get in, but there are tons of great colleges out there that would love to have you. you've done amazing work and i'm sure you'll be successful anywhere.

Yeah. I'm sure I'll get in somewhere else that's good. Being from PA, I kind of hoped I'd be able to stay relatively close, and I really liked Penn, but C'est la Vie.

It was suggested to me that the fact that my school is very conservative catholic, I have a lot of religious activities on my activities resume, my essay mentioned briefly the importance of some of these activities to me (though, the essay was not about this at all) and that in my one interview my interviewer and I spent a decent amount of the time discussing his and my respective religions might not have gone over well with our area's admissions rep, who's a big supporter of planned parenthood and such. If the school lets her mess with the admissions process like that, though, maybe it's best I go somewhere else. It's probably not that, anyway. My councelor said he'd call. I'm interested to hear if they tell him anything. Hahaha, and one of the teachers who wrote me a rec is an alumn whose two kids went there, he was furious and said he was gonna go down there and first strongly suggest they reverse their decision, and then tell them he's gonna stop making contributions to the alumni fund. That will not help at all, but the image of it happening almost makes being rejected worth it.

P.S. Letmepass, congrats!

Wow with those stats and legacy n not getting in. Bizarre

Ok I feel really retarded right now. I can't find the link where I entered all my stats in and they gave me a quick and easy copy/paste thing to post my stats. :o Can anyone direct me to it? :p

What the hell?!?!?

I don't understand.

Did you commit a felony?

Nope. And nothing else that would stand out to me as negative on my app...unless that my summer activities were existant but kind of minimal would have been enough to put me in the rejection pile.

Wow.

Any chance there was a typo on one of your essays that you may have overlooked? I've heard of something that petty killing people before.
