Reflection
Strengths: Good all around,my courses were as good as I could get them and my leadership was decent

Weaknesses:Weak math, which may be a problem at Wharton

Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:Not a bad applicant, but there are some spectacular people out there, maybe they want to see what I’ll finish with grade-wise, and how i’ll make my senior year count

What would you have done differently?: Maybe let them know that I had skipped pre-calc to take calc earlier, which affected my proficiency in Math 2. And that my teacher didn’t teach BC concepts because it was a senior class, so no one took the AP test.

Other Factors: None that I am aware. Feeling okay, but the best thing to do is to do my best until March

EXCITED TO MEET ALL MY WHARTON MATES!!

and @crc016, We were on the same boat!!

Counselor Rec: No idea besides the fact that I took most difficult courseload available.
Additional Info/Rec: Only submitted the 2 teacher recs.
Interview: Went well. Lasted around 45 minutes, we talked a lot and I had some good questions and answers.

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Why Penn: 8.5 – Related it to how IB has opened my mind. Found one small typo due to Common app formatting, but I think it would be overlooked.
Any dual-degree program essays: N/A
CommonApp Essay: 8.5 – Creative, if I may say so myself. I talked about allowing my ego to get the best of me when I mistook talk of a summer internship for an official offer and then cleared my summer schedule of other commitments, only to find that it had fallen through. It showed a lot of reflection.

Gender: F
Income Bracket Range: 80-90k
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): None unless Uyghur counts as URM

Reflection
Strengths: Grades, ACT
Weaknesses: ECs (I didn’t really have any ECs before deciding I wanted to go out of state this summer, so I took on most of my ECs this year), Penn essay
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Only applied to USC so far, and they haven’t sent out results yet so I’ll never know
What would you have done differently?: Probably everything. I would’ve taken on more ECs at the very beginning of high school, because honestly I’m so surprised I got in like this. I was totally braced for rejection. I’m just so so so ecstatic, especially because I don’t have to do any more college apps. Congrats to everybody!!! Whether you were accepted or not, you’re off to bigger and better things!

As a followup, I realized I forgot to post which School I got into in my post (post #10). I got into CAS.

U.S. State/Territory or Country: Northeast
School Type: Public

Reflection
Strengths: Grades, Obama fellowship, community service
Weaknesses:essays, ACT score
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: in at a local safety
What would you have done differently?: I would have dedicated more time to making sure my essays were the best possible writing I could put out.

I was so surprised when I saw that I got in, but I think it ultimately came down to the cohesiveness of my application; my essay was about my experience on a political campaign, I highlighted my extracurriculars relating to politics/foreign affairs (and asked my recommenders to do the same), and stressed the same points in my interview. There’s a fine line between seeming passionate and redundant, but I wanted to make sure that the different aspects of my application were tied together by a common thread.

Decision: Accepted - CAS

Comments:
Grateful to be a Quaker, congrats to everyone else!
For future applicants, grades are almost always most important! But there are so many factors so try not to worry too much over one area. Have fun in high school this stuff is really not worth stressing over. Try to stay away from threads like these as they’ll only stress you out/annoy you/anger you more than necessary…

What would you have done differently?: Not fail the interview. It’s the first one I have ever done, and I was nervous and not confident. It really showed.

Other Factors: I never had a realistic shot at Penn, but I applied because on the slim chance I got in, it would be free. And as a low income student, it’s all about the Benjamins, baby.

Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Who knows, only twenty kids got in M&T early, no idea what they saw in me

Comments:
My app had 0 business in it. Seems like that’s what they like as I thought my app was picture-perfect for MIT, but got deferred there. Colleges dig strange/unconventional apps nowadays IMO.
Kill it academics wise – that’s a definite. But make sure you do something in HS that makes people curious, something that people have to prod you about to actually comprehend how you did it (i.e. Cal Newport- Failed Simulation – he really has a point).

Strengths: GPA, SAT, EC, Art Award
Weaknesses: volunteer hours, SAT IIs, so-so why Penn essay, don’t know about the recs
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: NA
What would you have done differently?: I would have probably tried to score higher on the SAT IIs so that I wouldn’t have had to worry about them as much. I also forgot to self report my AP scores, but when I panicked and called admissions, they said that it wouldn’t be held against me.

Weaknesses: asian male, not the strongest ECs
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: They could really see the type of person I was through my application. Better GPA/SAT than other applicants I knew

Comments:
I showed interest in science and management through my activities. UW GPA > 3.9 and SAT> 2300 helps get your foot in the door. Then you need to stand out and there should be a pattern or theme within your app of what kind of person you are (enviromentalist, computer programmer, young entrpeneur, etc.)

I’m elated right now to be in. Still hasn’t completely hit me yet. No idea why my app was chosen over the countless other overqualified students.

Why Penn: I thought it was great, I wrote it as if I was experiencing the Hay Day Penn Tradition in Junior Year. My friends I had met from different opportunities and clubs I had taken would talk to me about my accomplishments at Penn and take a bite out of their straw hat. At the end of the essay, I mentioned specifics about the event and ended it with the president declaring me a senior. (Look up hay day if you are lost! )
