Official USC 2013 Transfer Thread

I’m trying to figure out my chances of a successful (junior, fall 2013) transfer to USC, so if anyone can help me out, that’d be great!

I have a 3.709 GPA right now because my fall semester grades suffered a bit (hard Macro professor and I’m weaker in science = bad GPA). I only have two semesters of grades because I’m also a spring entrant, but I’m transferring from Mount Holyoke College, which is competitive enough, so I don’t know if USC will consider those circumstances when it looks at my application. My SAT/ACT scores are both high, and I graduated HS with a decent GPA (4.4). I’m also studying abroad this spring semester, so my situation is unique enough, but this also means, I have no idea where I stand compared to others. I also have an internship at an economics-related company. Any ideas?

I also haven’t taken Micro yet, but would be eligible to take the USC 300 Micro if accepted. Will this work against me? I simply haven’t had the chance to take it, and my advisor said at the time that I shouldn’t do Micro and Macro at the same time.

blueberriz- Your stats look great. Dont worry too much about your grades. Its all about the essay. If you can nail your essay then you have a good chance of getting in.

Do transfer students have to submit a Secondary School Report (I’m thinking not since I don’t see mention of it on their website, but I am just double-checking)?
Also, can we send ACT scores ourselves or does it have to be through the actual ACT website?

The supplement says that transfer students do not have to submit the college report- so no. You just have to submit official transcripts.
I think the ACT/SAT scores also have to be official.

Hope that helps! :)

Hello Everyone,
I have been lurking on this thread for a little while, and decided to post!

I have a few questions real quick and it’d be great if someone could help me out with them (Thanks ahead of time!)

Are transfers required to send official high school transcripts? If so, do they weigh them heavily?

How about SAT/ACT scores, do they require those? (i never took either test)

Does transferring as a junior to Marshall Business require Letter’s of Recommendation? If not, would it hurt to send one in? And, as a transfer, should i just have my professor write a formal letter, or should my professor use the freshman “form” type letter of rec from the commonapp?

On the commonapp, they ask you “first-choice major” and “second- choice major”… do you guys’ think it would be a good idea for me to just apply to Economics instead of Business, as business is much more difficult to get into? I would be equally happy with getting into Economics or Marshall Business…but i guess what im asking is, should i still put Business as my first choice, and Economics as my second choice? Because i am afraid that if I am not good enough for Marshall, that they wouldn’t be as happy to admit me into Economics. (not sure if this makes any sense to anyone, and if it doesn’t don’t worry about responding…thanks!)

Also, if anyone could possibly chance me that would be awesome!

I’m applying as a Junior transfer from a CCC for Marshall Business (first choice) and Economics (second choice).

My cumulative GPA is 3.66
I have a massive upward trend…when i first started CC a few years ago, i took two classes and got an “F” and a “B”… next quarter i got 2 B’s…next quarter i got 2 A’s and 2 B’s…then i got 2 A’s and a B…then i got 3 A’s… another 3 A’s…and my most recent quarter(fall) i got another 3 A’s.
So i think that i have a pretty nice looking upward trend?
I have also taken Micro and Macro Econ (got an A and a B…)
Along with Accounting I (got an A), and im taking II and III in the upcoming quarters.

The thing is, i don’t have any internships, but i have a few EC’s like being a volunteer tennis coach, team captain for my HS tennis team, business club at my CC, playing intercollegiate tennis at my CC, and working at a cafe in my area…

I am on the quarter system and i have been taking about 3 classes per quarter… I’m not sure if thats enough of a load do you guys’ think?

Do you guy’s/girls’ think i have a chance for Marshall if i write a good essay, or even Economics?

Any input or response is greatly appreciated!
Good luck to the rest of you!!
We got this!

Markfoti

I think you have a really nice shot at getting in. You have a sweet grade trend man so that should be a huge advantage. Good luck man!

Does anyone else have “Current message- sent” and “Message history- sent” on their app status check page? Probs referring to how they send a letter saying that they received the application… just wondering!

Hey Everyone! I applied last year to Annenberg as a COMM major and i got in and i go there now! If anyone has questions about USC and the transfer process message me! good luck to everyone!

How important do you think letters of rec are? Does everyone turn them in?

They’re not required but I’m am submitting 3. Only submit them if you real feel they’re influential. You don’t want to waste their time with something that can be shown on your transcript. I am with the two professors I am receiving recs from, and I made sure they wrote about specifics relating to me and USC admissions. My other rec is from my Employer, he is talking about how I impacted his company (created partnerships)/demonstrated leadership by mentoring interns.

I wouldn’t submit a letter of recommendation if its a teacher that doesn’t know your name and only has your grade to base it on. Make sure its someone who can actually talk about you as an individual - not someone that you’re rushing to make recommendation just bc you can.

That being said, there are plenty of people who get accepted without recommendations.

I also have “Current message- sent” and “Message history- sent” on my status check page. Does anyone know what this means? Also, does USC make any decisions before May?

Hi
I am applying as a sophomore transfer. I have completed 18 units with a 4.0 and will have 33 units by the end of spring. Where on the USC website does is mention that transfers have to submit SAT scores? Does anyone know this for sure?

Also, still waiting to hear if anyone who will transfer as a sophomore in the past found out they got in during the spring before spring grades were out. In other words will all sophomore transfers have to wait until June?

Thanks!

How’s everyone’s essay coming along?

Does it make you a more competitive applicant if you have completed USC General Ed’s requirements that are offered at your JC?
Because by the end of this spring I have two General Ed’s that I was not able to complete just because of scheduling issues. I emailed a USC counselor and he said it is not required, but the only important things are the major pre-requisites, which I have already done and gotten A’s in. Anyone care to share their input?

Hello Everyone! This will be my second semester at a community college in hopes of transferring to USC possibly fall 2013? I had a GPA of 3.775 in high school. For my first semester I completed 18 uints which were part of the USC General ED’s my grades were 5 A’s and one C in a anthropology class. At this point my gpa is a 3.667 at the cc. My goal for the coming semester is to raise my GPA as much as I can. With my second semester I will accomplish 30 units which will leave me eligible to apply as transfer this year.

MY QUESTION: By fall 2013, if my GPA raises to a 3.7-3.8 what are the chances of me being accepted into Marshall? or should I stay and apply fall 2014 in hopes of raising my GPA more?

SIDE NOTE: I have held a job on the side and involved in volunteer and extra curricular activities.

For transfer students, what is the essay prompt for USC? My major is Bio so I’d apply to dornife, but on the common app it just asks for 2 Short answers and 1 Personal essay that is 250-500 words… Is that really the essay for transfer students?

Also the recommended core classes for each major says “recommended”… Will they infringe this on junior transfers or both sophomore and junior transfers. For biology there are quite a few classes that work towards the major. Im in progress for most but won’t have 2… Will they look down upon this, or should I declare no major. Im a sophomore transfer with 35 units completed and 16 in progress for spring 2013’.
PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS AND THE QUESTION I POSTED LIKE 5 SECONDS AGO ABOVE…

Hey all, I’ll be applying for a sophomore transfer into the Global Health program (its in Keck SOM) and I’m not under the Trojan Transfer Plan :frowning: and was wondering what my chances were for getting in?

UG: UIUC
First Semester GPA: 4.0 with 13 semester hours, projected 4.0 next semester with 16 semester hours
EC’s: Volunteer at hospital, volunteer with local agencies, pre-med club, political club, cultural club, maybe starting research at a lab
HS Class rank: 26/690
GPA: 5.4 Weighted, 4.97 Unweighted (5 pt scale)
ACT: 30, 12 writing
AP’s: Chemistry (5), Biology (4), European History (5), Macroeconomics (5), Calculus A/B (5), United States History (5)
EC’s: some clubs with leadership and volunteer at temple and local park district

Hi, if anyone can answer my questions, that’ll be great!
I’m currently doing my applications, but I came upon some … Issues, I guess! But first, here is my background/information/etc!

This is my first year at a CC, and this college is under quarter system. I’m trying to transfer as a sophomore and going into Marshall. I finished all of my GEs, except for science (I’m doing science next quarter!). At the moment, I have 26 quarter units. For my current schedule, winter quarter, I have an additional of 41, then by Spring, I would have 56 (which is 37 semester units). I will also be finishing everything, GEs, plus English and math by summer with a total of 66 units. My GPA right now, based on Fall quarter is a 3.2 due to a very … Low point in my life during that time (which I wrote about in one of my essays!). But by the end of winter quarter, I will have a gpa of a 3.6, and I’m trying my best to boost it up by spring/summer. I don’t have much extra curricular because I’ve consumed my life with a job! So … On with the questions!

How does the application process works? Yes, the apps are due on February 1st, but when are the transcripts officially due?

Is there a certain theme that USC looks for in apps? Passion, character … Etc? (I finished all of my essays, but I feel like I should either tweak them or write a new one).

As for math, I will be finishing my all of math courses by summer. Will that be a problem?

What are my chances?

I’m not taking any econ classes … Instead, I’m taking 3 accounting classes. Should I take an econ class?

Are the acceptances based off of GPA, pretty much? And for sophomores, are they going to base everything off of your Fall grades (since you’re turning in your current transcript with your apps)?

I had more questions, and they’re probably repetitive throughout this whole thread, but … I can’t think of them atm :(

Harry and Adian- I got into Marshall with a 3.5, so dont worry about GPA too much. You just have to focus on writing a good essay.
