4.0 with 16 units at my CC so far before High School.

First semester, and I am taking 16 units. My courses in progress are Calc 2, Engineering Physics 101 (mechanics), English 101, and Intro to Java programming. Hopefully I will keep my 4.0, and if not retain a 3.85+ GPA. Next sememster I’ll take Math 105, Physics 102, English 102, and Robotics or C++. On top of that I passed 6 APs with 4+(including English, but apperently USC doesn’t accept AP score for that requirement). I’ll very much exceed the recommended course work for the transferring into the Engineering program.

HS GPA was ~3.6 and 1810 SAT (can I retake? I never studied or took it seriously in HS).

I am worried most about ECs however. I practically have none. =/

By the way, if we applied to USC before through Common App, can we reuse the same letter of recs, or would I have to get them again?

Don’t even bother retaking your SAT!!! Trust me, I got a similar score (1800) and an ACT score of 27 (or 28, can’t remember) and neither really affected my acceptance to USC. I don’t even think it’s required to submit your score(s), but since my official high school transcript included all of it, I might as well…

Also, your gpa was higher than mine both in high school and college. I had a 3.3~3.4 gpa in hs; 3.7 in college; I didn’t go to a CC, though. As far as ECs go, just do the ones you want to do. I was only involved with 2-3 clubs, and emphasized a lot on my most important one. I don’t really know about your letters of rec situation…

Quick question guys,
I am looking over the writing prompts for the Common Application and one of them states:

“Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences in the space below (1000 character maximum)”

While reading the prompt, 2 topics immediately came to mind but I can’t decide between them. Maybe you guys can give me your opinion. You see, I was co-founder of an organization at my high school that to this date I am really passionate about. The thing is that the club I helped establish is not exactly relevant to what I wish to pursue. The organization was established to empower (specifically but not limited to) hispanic males to attend a post-secondary institution while the field I will be going into is engineering (specifically mechanical engineering). My junior year (the organization’s first year) I was secretary and then I moved up to president my senior year.

The other topic would be writing about the Robotics team I was part of during high school, a topic I too am passionate about. My involvement in the club I think played the biggest influence in my decision to follow engineering at the professional level. I also held leadership positions with the Robotics team. My sophomore and junior year I was class representative and my senior year I was awarded secretary.

The problem is that I feel like writing about the organization I cofounded would be seen as a bigger accomplishment. I don’t know if writing about something that does not really overlap with my major would not benefit my application as writing about something that does overlap with my major. What do you guys think?

Hello everyone! I look forward to talking and communicating over this board, during our journey to transfer. I am currently a sophomore at a Junior College in Texas. It has been my dream to attend USC and be a Trojan for most of my life, just as most of you have. My first semester of college was not the best… Like many of students I quickly saw I needed to really put in all the effort I had while studying for exams etc… My current gpa is 3.36. (Low I know) if everything turns out like I have planned I will most likely graduate with my Associates in the spring, with around a 3.4. For the most part I have I have an upward trend in my grades mostly A’s as of late. My question is, I plan to major in Communication, as I am taking a couple of Comm classes for electives here at my juco. Would I have a better shot at acceptance if I applied for a Dornsife major like Political Science which I am also Interested in, rather than a more competitive major like an Annenberg major. Am I just overthinking this all? Or will the first choice major I apply to affect my acceptance whatsoever? Thanks guys, look forward to chatting with you all over these next few months.

hi I posed earlier in the month but I never heard back, anyway someone could give me some advice? :)

Hi everyone…just wanted to see what my chances were for SC, particularly Biochemistry? I figure it’s a slim to none chance but it’s worth a shot…freshman year UCI gpa 1.5 (Biomedical engineering), sophomore and junior community college gpa is around 3.4. I’ve retaken all the classes I didn’t pass my freshman year. EC’s include working at a hospital part time, member of chem club, health occupation students of america, and I may be volunteering at the hospital I work at in the near future. Thanks for all of your advice!

GPA: 3.69. 55 quarter Units. Just finished my first year @ a CCC. Essay, extra currics, and other things put aside would I be competitive for USC?

I want to get into Leventhal School of Accounting but does that mean I’d have to apply to Marshall School of Business? I have a feeling that it’s inside of Marshall

Youre absolutely correct. You have to apply for Bus Admin first, but dont worry about that since once you get here the advisors will help you figure it all out!

To everyone asking about their chances of getting in:
There really isn’t a formula for being accepted or being rejected. Obviously, good grades look great…upward trends, being involved in something other than school…etc…but really, I was a great candidate last fall and USC rejected me. People with less than 2.0 and 3.0 got in this spring, just as people with 4.0s got rejected. So, without trying to sound negative, your chances fall down to this: you will get in or you won’t get in. Come last week of April 2012, I checked CC like mad and I stressed myself out more than necessary. Just do what you need to do…what happens, happens. Honestly guys…that’s my best advice.

I am a current freshmen undergraduate at HPU(Hawaii Pacific University). I want to go to USC and like most of the people who post here for this reason, i have gruesome high school grades and SAT scores. Although, i have legacy there (my older sister) who is in pre-med and a head cheerleader with outstanding grades that is probably graduating undergraduate at the end of this upcoming summer. She took all regulars except one preAP class which was biology in high school and came to HPU for a year (got on the deans list for each semester) and transferred there with no legacy or alum. She also did cheerleading for most of her life and a bunch of out of city and out of state competitions on top of everything.

Anyways, back to me. I got accepted here at HPU for fall 2012 and i am currently working hard for an at least 3.8 or higher GPA with 15 credits this semester and 15 for the next. This is intended, so no slacking or misjudgment on my part. Then there comes the decision of when to apply. I looked around this site and i’ve seen people saying that if i apply this january/february that if i have good enough grades that they won’t look at my high school grades or SAT scores. Then say to me to send my transcript of the spring semester and make a decision from those grades also as a whole. However my chances could be pretty slim. So that is my first option of the big choice i’m making.

My second option is kind of fuzzy and also still a decision i’m hoping to get help on. Let’s say i don’t apply this January/February and i decide to stay Fall semester 2013 and apply that upcoming January/February of 2014. Then that means i have to stay here for the spring 2014 semester. My credits will be added up to 60 by then. So ill be considered a junior. The problem is, i’m still undecided, AND not sure if the admission process will be more challenging when i do pick a major?.. considering that i have to pick one since i will be a junior according to their standards.

So someone please give me advice on what i should do! I’ll be forever grateful. I am very determined and seeking guidance. THANK YOU! :]

Hey So let me just tell you this right off the back.

With the options you have given, it really does not matter when you transfer. I am currently a transfer student at USC and transferred with 42 units, a sophomore. If you decide to apply this year, there would be no issue. The only thing they require is that you have your Math and English requirements done. With you aiming high for that 3.8, you are already on your way to being a successful candidate. If you are unsure about your major at this point, I would apply this year. That way if you get in, you can decide your major where you would prospectively be taking your upper division major classes. Making sense?

If you apply this year, you would focus on your GE’s and other electives that transfer over and are interesting to you. You would not be under any pressure to start major prep. Personally, I think people wait 2 years before they transfer because they have an intense major such as business or engineering where the amount of major prep classes is tremendous so they wait and take it before they transfer to save money and speed up their graduation date.

I am a English (Creative Writing) major and only two of the five English classes counted as USC English courses. The other three were electives. So me waiting that extra year would have been a waste.

So, since you are unsure, go ahead and focus on the GEs and other transferable elective courses and apply this year, what could hurt? You are unsure of the direction and if admitted into USC, I can guarantee with all the diverse majors they have, finding something that grabs your attention won’t be a problem.

Here, you can look up your university and see the classes equivalent to USC. They cover GEs, course-to-course, and other classes that can transfer as an elective.

You were very clear, that cleared a couple things up! Thank you:]

I actually already looked at the classes i am taking this semester, 3 will transfer and 2 won’t (too late to drop any classes now). I’m not so bummed about it because one of them is Intermediate Algebra (which i need) and the other is an intro to communications. Although, right now I’m taking a diversity Gen Ed class (sociology). Next semester I’m taking a Gen Ed (anthropology), with a combining class of pre cal 1&2 which is math 108 at USC (will transfer). I will be done with the lower writing class (130) by next semester also. So math and writing will be done with the other 2 Gen Eds. So i will be coming out officially with 30 credits and 28 transferable credits.

Is that ok? Or will they count that against me? Also, i don’t really have any ECs to show for unless they’re from high school but they weren’t really credible either. Should i try to join some now? I am trying to get good with teachers to get some reccs too and it’s going well so far.

Is there anything else i should be worrying about? I want to make sure to cover everything to get most things, especially if I’m going to shoot to apply this year.

Oh lastly, if i come out with what i just said with a high GPA, do i have a good chance?

High GPA’s make a difference especially if you don’t have a lot of ECs. Even then though, you still want something because it’s extremely rare a person gets accepted with NO ECs. so GPA makes a difference!!! The average is 3.7. Most people had around that average. There are some that had slight below that, but their ECs were impeccable.

If you haven’t already, (but i’m sure most people on this thread alreayd have) look at the transfer acceptance thread 2012 page of CC. It will give several profiles (including mine) of a few of the accepted transfer students for fall 2012/ spring 2013

From what I 've seen with other applicants, the more GE’s completed, it can make you more competitive. One would be if you are undeclared. Another would be, im my case, If you have a major that doesn’t require a lot of prep work. I had all the GEs that I could complete at a community college finished by the spring semester. Since you are coming from a University, it will be different becasue credits take longer to process to USC credits. Realistically, you won’t be penalized to get them all done. As it is, you will have 3 more GE’s that madatory at USC to complete once you transfer.

If there is nothing going on at your school that interests you, then volunteer!! Just volunteer anywhere, more likely something that interest you and could be something you may pursue in the future at their university. Since you would be a first year transfer, using HS stuff as well would still be recent enough for you to get away with. I did :). Especially if it was a leadership role. You personal statement would be where you would talk about you extracurricular and how they were to your benefit for your career (if you choose that promt).

I would say anybody with a 3.2 or higher has a solid chance of getting in. If your GPA is a little on the low side just make sure you concentrate on your essays. Don’t be afraid to let your personality show and make sure that your love for USC is clear. In about a month or so this thread is going to be moving fast! I hope you all get to know each other and get ready for a life changing year. FIGHT ON!

Can someone just chime in here real quick? I am very confused with the common apps. I never took the SAT/ACT, is that a bad thing as a junior transfer? I have 80+ semester units and from my understanding, the SAT/ACT was for soph transfers? Thank you, I am sure I will have more questions but this is the only one I had off the top of my head.

quick question about credits. I’m in my second year of a cc. by the end of this school year I should have about 49 transferrable credits. I know the cap is at 62 I think. would I be considered a sophomore or junior transfer?
