Official USC 2013 Transfer Thread

@shelbydwhite

I read through most of them and some are similar to mine. Though, the ones similar to mine (by credits and GPA) they have a decent amount of ECs. In high school i did a bunch of volunteer work at an old folks home and went to a few walks like, heart walk, diabetes walk, ect. However i didn’t think it’d be much. i know this idea is bad but is it possible to ******** a little? even if i could make seem legit?

Also, i don’t think i’m able to choose my topics. The topics look permanent. The ones i see ask about my ECs, which you said earlier, and what are my academic interests at USC. I don’t want to seem like a dumb ass but i kinda don’t know where to start or have enough/valuable information to state. I write really good essays, only if i have a good idea of what to write about. Do you have your essays that i could look over and get an idea?

oh and correction, ill only have 24 transferrable credits but officially i’m coming out my school with 30. Still not a big deal, right?

Hi, I was wondering if USC tailors the units transfered to the way they give out credits. My current school (SFSU), gives out 3 units per class, but I know USC gives out 4 units (for most). So would I use USC to count how many units I have, or do I use my current school to count it.

oops, sorry about the bad punctuations (above post).

Emprex- u dont need those scores as a junior transfer and u dont have to take it just to apply.
Movieguy- youll be a sophomore with 49 units but youd be considered a second semester sophomore if that matters to you.
Bycity- your units will transfer as is. If it 3 units then its 3 units, it wont change.

I know this may be kinda of a stupid question but just to be sure, if I’m applying for Economics, will it be under Dornsife or Marshall? Because I emailed the USC counselor to check whether my courses matched up and she said it was a bit low but as long as I do well the next two quarters, I will have a chance in Marshall.

I know that Marshall is highly competitive. I got rejected after senior year in high school but is Dornsife as competitive for Economics? Also, is there anyone that got accepted willing to let me read their essays as a sample? I’m kinda stuck on mine :/

Hey ppsm93,

I’m pretty sure Econ is under Dornsife or at least I don’t think it’s in Marshall. I was looking at the USC Decisions thread from last year and on the 2nd page someone got into Dornsife/Economics. The thread is here -> http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1332795-usc-transfer-decisions-2012-a.html

Also transferring into Marshall is easier than getting in as a senior. I’ve seen GPA’s all over the place from 3.4 - 4.0 Sometimes 4.0s get rejected and 3.4s get in so it’s sort of a crap shoot.

@emprex Thanks a lot!

I would like to go for Marshall, but I’m not exactly sure if my GPA is that great for it… Is it all the same if I’m transfering from a UC b/c most of the stats are those from CCs.

Guys, is it necessary to take SAT for transferring to USC from a community college?

@Fogueira

I talked to my counselor and she said that it’s not required for transfer students

Some good information on this thread…thanks folks.

I know that it’s difficult to gauge but what’s a ballpark that one’s gpa should be in to get into dornsife?

@uschopeful2013

Anywhere between a 3.4-3.7 gpa.

@ people, just a reminder what you write on your USC supplement counts for 35-40% of you getting accepted as a transfer. I was recently at the admissions office talking with my counselor and he said there are three huge factors that make up their decisions.

  1. The supplement
  2. Upward grade trend
  3. What do you do besides go to school?
    All three of those should be reflected in your application and if you feel strong about them then you are an excellent candidate for USC.

I hope that gives clarity to the admissions process.

Coming in with 24 credits to USC will not be a problem. You will be counted as a freshman and you HS gpa and SAT/ACT scores will be considered as well. I had the exact same situation. When you put in your application, if yo have less than 30 at that time, despite your spring grades, they will look at HS and standardized test scores as well. My HS gpa was 3.7 but my SAT scores were low, (1590), but I was still accepted. Since you haven’t declared a major yet, your main focus will be the GE and elective classes and what kind of grades you get in them.

As far as the essay goes, I would gladly send you mine. With the promts, you are correct, then give you a few to choose from. I could have sworn they give you an option to write whatever you want if the offered prompts don’t sound appealing. Mine was basically about my life/inspiration, my passion for writing and why I would be an asset to USC. Personally, I think thats what got me in. My GPA was average and my list of ECs weren’t as spectacular as the other accepted students, in my opinon at least. Just shoot me a private message on CC or give me your email and I’ll send it your way.

btw: there is nothing wrong with embellishing. If something you did wasn’t a huge deal, you can make it as grand as you want. unless you say you were some national merit scholar where they can research it, They won’t be looking into you that much.

@shelbydwhite can I read your personal statement as well?

@shelbydwhite, may I read your personal statement too :O?

Hi all,

I posted this on the USC forum, but it seems much more lively here.

Specifically, wondering if anyone has successfully transferred into the OT BS/MS program that they offer. I requested information for the normal 2 yr MS program, and found myself preferring their program overall to other universities that I’ve looked.

I need to retake a stats class because I believe I may have taken the wrong one. Plus I got a C+ in it (.10 off from a B-) and USC requires a B-. I also need to take a few psych courses. I have an app lined up with adviser to figure out ones my current university has.

Looking for any information on stats (if you applied, or know someone)
Here are my current stats:

3.12 gpa (combined from two universities) upward trend, and maintaining that this semester
Member of Kinesiology Undergrad Organization (volunteer with them)

Kinesiology Major

Work for Physical Activity Lab at a Senior Center [basically maintain the fitness room, conduct health assessments, and help the seniors, pretty much I work by myself but the director of center (not my boss) said only positives have been said about me. One of the better workers that my university has sent them in a long time]

For a little uniqueness I’ve had 3 concussions (possibly 4 which is from a recent auto accident) So I’ve been dealing with the affects of those for about 7 years total

What I could work on is getting a leadership position although I had one in high school (captain of volleyball team), and at a previous job I trained new workers even though I was officially trained to do that. The bosses just loved that I could stay calm, and work with whatever they gave me.
Thank you!

@uschopeful2013 & @ppsm93

sure, message me your email address and I’ll send it.

I’m hoping to apply this fall to USC as a business major. Are the GE classes they have listed required or recommended? I’m talking about the ones with the roman numerals, and if they are required what if they are not the exact course numbers as the ones they listed but still fall under that category?

Can anyone tell me if USC takes grade trends into consideration? Thank you.

^ from what I’ve read on their website USC does take an upward grade trend into consideration.
