They shouldn’t be able to figure that out. On the transcript, (for most) it will just list the class, not the class and if it was online or not. I took one online class during my first semester and two my second (having 21 units in the spring will sway you to do online). And I was not jeporadized and got credit for the GE requirement.

Hey all. I just wanted to stop by to say whats good to the prospective USC students. I am attending USC as a sophomore transfer majoring in Computer Engineering/Computer Science.
Also my background:URM,3.4GPA,Various Extracurriculars, make sure to write a good essay, and have a backup as USC makes it well known that it is hard to get into.

Good Luck.

Seems like this thread is starting to pick up. Just wait until next month, its going to get so busy. These are exciting times for you future Trojans! Fight On!

Hey y’all! I’m a freshman majoring in International Relations at a large state school, hoping to transfer to USC for my sophomore year. My high school GPA was so-so – about a 96 UW with only about 1 or 2 non-advanced classes, and my test scores were okay but not up to USC’s standards. Unfortunately my high school sends test scores along with the transcript, so I guess I can’t hide them from USC…
I took dual enrollment classes in high school and got A’s in them, but USC won’t accept them. Right now my GPA is a 4.0 and I’m currently taking 18 credits. My current classes:

Japanese I (it doesn’t say whether or not it’ll transfer on the articulation agreement, but my admissions officer said they’ll evaluate it when they receive my transcript)
History (transferable elective)
Intro to IR (transferable for my major, but USC won’t accept it until they evaluate my syllabus if I’m accepted)
Music (transferable elective, online)
College Algebra (transferable, math requirement)
Cultural Anthropology (transferable, USC GE)

I think I might be able to get at least a 3.8 in my transferable classes. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Spring semester I’ll be taking 18 more credits – 15 transferable, including the writing requirement and another USC GE course (my school only has 3 total classes that count as USC GEs).
I’m also applying to LMU as a backup. If I don’t get into USC, I’m definitely applying again next year.

is there anyway that we can get a hold of the essay promt or is that only available when we access the application?

Hi everyone :)

I’m “new” to CC (even though i’m been creepin’ for a while lol) and I’m soooo excited, nervous, and anxious to apply as a sophomore transfer to USC. Right now I go to a private 4-year university in Texas, but I know it was the wrong decision to pick my “safe” school and not apply to USC. For the first time in my life i’m actually excited to write an essay lol (the “why transfer” one). Once I finish I would greatly appreciate it if anyone would be willing to proofread and critique it for me Good luck to everyone!! Words cannot express how much I hope to be seeing some of you guys next year at USC ^__^

@nmwcorvette i’m not exactly sure what you mean but the essay is available on the common app

Can someone clear me on this?

“You must complete two semesters of English composition before enrolling at USC.”

I received credits from my current college (AP Lit 5, AP Lang 5), thus I don’t need to take English at the moment. Does this count or can I seriously not transfer to USC until I complete two semesters of English class?

I believe USC doesnt count the AP as prerequisite for English.

@GoodNightNell

Hmm, don’t quote me on this, but I have a friend from UCSD who had transferred into USC without satisfying the WRIT-140 requirement, I’ll confirm with the person tomorrow, but regardless, I do recommend that you satisfy the requirement just in case; if you cant, try to apply anyway, especially if you feel you’re going to be a competitive applicant!

For anyone that’s curious, I’m a recent transfer for the 2012/13 school year, and I work as a work study at the enrollment services so I do know a thing or two about the application/enrollment process; if you have any questions, feel free to ask me through here or PM :)

Yeah, I also transferred into USC as a sophomore transfer without the WRT-140 requirement, though I’m somewhat of a special case. I would try to complete it though as a large majority of students enroll in that class, and it’s first come first serve, and as a transfer you will most likely get near last priority during transfer orientation.

Hi, I have a question about the English Composition requirement as well. I’m currently enrolled in a university in China and I did take 2 semesters of English Composition classes, but since those classes are more on the ESL level, do they count?

I’m also a little worried about the writing requirement. Like GoodNightNell, I made a good score on the AP exam so I got credit for it at my current college and didn’t have to take a composition class. I emailed the office of admissions asking if the exam counts and if my current English class (taking it because my school requires a “literary traditions” credit as part of the core) counts, and this was their reply:

“You must complete a one-semester course equivalent to USC’s WRIT-130. Usually the second course in an English-language college composition sequence satisfies this requirement. This course may not be taken on a Pass/No Pass basis. Professional, technical, creative and remedial writing courses will not satisfy this requirement. If you are unsure if your writing course is equivalent to WRIT 130, or if it does not appear on any current articulation agreements or histories, keep the syllabus and papers for later review by USC.”

So, they didn’t really answer my question :\ My current English class doesn’t have out-of-class papers to write (only on tests), so I think I’ll probably have to take a WRIT-130 equivalent during the spring semester. I don’t think the AP credit counts since they didn’t say anything about it However I replied back explaining that my English class doesn’t have papers and asked them if I should take a WRIT-130 equivalent during the spring semester, so I’ll update you guys again once they reply.

Also, I emailed my region’s USC admissions counselor last Thursday and she still hasn’t replied :\ I had emailed her just a few days before and she replied back the next day. Should I keep waiting, email her again, email another counselor, or…? I’m really eager for answers because the questions are important >.<
(*oh also, does anyone know if the admissions counselors are the ones who review and decide on applications? because I’m afraid I might be annoying my counselor with too many questions lol, and I wouldn’t want the one deciding to by annoyed)

@Shelbydwhite

Wow, that was a great essay! Im very impressed but disappointed at the same time because i don’t want to copy what you said lol

Oh and i have a question. If i do a class during the winter break, would that be counted towards spring semester or fall? and if its fall, i think i might be getting the grades a bit late so that might jeopardize when i can turn in my application.

Well unfortunately looks like USC is a no go for me. I emailed the USC advisor to my college and I can’t get around the Math 118 requirement whatsoever. I would have it completed in Summer prior to transfer but it’s just the rules. Completely my fault for poor scheduling of classes. I should have done everything 1 semester earlier.

eprex, I believe the math requirement is simply at least Algebra II in high school or intermediate Algebra in college. it says so here: http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1314/TransferringToUSC_2013.pdf
Isn’t Math 118 Calculus?

on another note, USC seems to have updated all their transfer pdfs today :)

Math 118 is business calculus… But they call it fundamental calculus now… And now it’s a requirement for economics … I guess make sure that you check the new recommended prerequisites for your major if there is any new ones

Does anyone know how many letters of reccomendation Dornsife requires?

@cranberie letters of recommendation are not required

@CoolKid094

I took 3 classes during the winter and they counted it as a spring semester class. Since USC doesn’t have a winter semester, they just place additional classes in the spring grades. Once you turn in the application. just give them the transcripts you have. I waited until all my fall and winter classes were posted on my transcripts before sending them in. It did delay my application process, but still better because its more for them to evaluate, especially with considering HS gpa and SAT scores because I still has under 30 units.
