Official USC 2014 Transfer Thread

Hi guys, I am planning on transferring to USC (Marshall) by fall of 2015. I am currently on my third semester (2nd year) of CC. I still have a year left of CC to finish prerequisites and fulfill the core requirements. I have a couple of concerns that I need help answering. I currently have a 3.7 GPA but I am currently taking a PreCalc class where the teacher is extremely difficult and knit pick about grading so the majority of the class has a C including myself. My question is would it be a smarter decision to receive a C from a 5 unit course of Precalc or a W and retake the class in hopes for a better grade? How will receiving a C affect my chances of being admitted to USC? In my other three courses, I currently have As so it is simply this C that I am worried about because the official drop date of my CC is this Friday. I have other EC as well such as working in a business firm, volunteering at a hospital. Thank you!

If I was you I would try my hardest to get a B and not drop it, pre-calc is not a required class anyways only calculus, I say this because as I stated a few pages back I talked with my counselor and he went to a USC convention and they told him strictly that they hated Ws, I mean more than one but I wouldn’t risk it.

I think its only fair to tell you guys since this is my second time applying because of bad planning. This site is a great way to get some general answers but also a great way to stress yourself out all spring semester. People are going to start trippin in April about hearing back, but expect very late May. and that is correct that more than one W is almost like shooting yourself in the foot. At least that’s what i have what ive heard from every counselor when concerning USC. Try for that B

Is anybody watching the game?

Trojans won!!!

Watched every second, it was one stressing game. Im glad with the result, its looking pretty good for everyone that does transfer seems like they will get a good looking team for 2 years hopefully with coach O as head coach. What do you think?

So glad this thread exists! Alright, I am a first year at Golden West College in Huntington Beach applying to USC Dornsife for Fall 2014 as a Bio major. Here are my stats:

HS GPA : 3.7
HS EC’s : Varsity tennis, Key Club Officer

College GPA : 3.8
College EC’s : Chartered and am President of my school’s Circle K Club
Volunteer and shadowing a dentist at a local dentistry
Volunteering weekly with Circle K

I am taking 19 units with A’s in Bio 1, Anthro, Philosophy, and Psych. I have a B in Calc! =( What concerns me most is the fact that I have a W in Freshman Comp english. I found out that I didn’t need to take the class because I passed the AP test so I dropped it. I heard USC hates W’s, but hopefully they won’t look to badly on it because for Intersession (Winter classes), I’m taking Critical Thinking, which is one level above Freshman Comp. (It’s also the equivalent to USC’s Writ 130). For Intersession, I’m going to be taking 13 units so that I will have completed 32 units before applying to USC. I heard from a USC counselor that if you complete 30 or more units in college before applying, they barely even look at your HS stats. By the time I apply to USC, I will have completed 32 units with A’s in Bio1, Soc, Psych, Phil, Physical Anthro, Art, Critical Thinking English (required), and Cultural Anthro, a B in Calc, and a W in Freshman English. I will have completed all but one section of their GE’s. I should be applying with a 3.9 GPA. (I’m presuming about my A’s during Intersession, but I got it. Trust. ;] )

For my Personal Statement, I am going to write about how I passionately want to be a dentist because I come from a poor family who could never afford dental work, and how USC’s resources (Keck School of Medicine, Ostrow School of Dentistry) will help me, etc. With my weekly shadowing at volunteering at the dentistry, I hope this will look really strong for me.

What really worries me is my B in Calc, my W in Freshman English, and the fact that I am applying as a sophomore transfer. Any comments, chances, or critiques that will either calm my mind or help me improve my app? THANKS! FIGHT ON!!

Hey guys! I applied to USC last year as a Freshman ( going into my sophomore year) and got in. I wasn’t able to attend since I didnt get any grants or aid. But I will be applying this year again to see whether or not I get more aid otherwise I will choose UCI if I get in there. If you guys have any questions feel free to ask :)

Oh awesome, thanks @Mik194! What were your stats when applying/how many units did you finish by the time of application? Anything special about your EC’s or Personal Statement?

Hey Guys! So I’m planning on applying to USC Marshall as a transfer student from a local CC. I hope to get in during the fall 2014 semester but there are a few things I would like to get some clarification on from people with similar experience.

1) I’ve completed all my prerequisites except for Business Calc which I plan on taking during the spring semester. I’m also enrolled in an Accounting 2 class for the upcoming winter session. The problem is I won’t be able to have these classes in my official transcript by the time I apply. Will they just ask me for these grades later on? And will this hurt my chances?

2) Also, I know that there is a 64 maximum unit limit upon transfer. I will have roughly 65 by the time I transfer. What happens then?

3) As for the core GE requirements and diversity requirement, I will have 3 GE’s done which just leaves me with one more plus the diversity requirement. How strict is SC on those requirements?

4) I currently have a 3.9 cummulative GPA and plan on doing 3 or so extracurriculars next spring. I’m afraid my EC’s won’t be up to par, but I’ve heard gpa is looked upon more favorably than EC’s. Is this relatively true?

What classes are recommended to take for a first-year looking to transfer for Fall 2014? I looked at http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1314/TransferingPlanningWorksheet2014.pdf</a> and http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1314/AdditionalCourseRecommendations2014.pdf</a> but I rather not take a foreign language due to the fact that it doesn’t fulfill any requirements for my current major, and not to sound pessimistic but in the chance that I don’t make it, I rather not take a foreign language class when I could have taken another breadth course.

I have AP credits and I’ve gone through some other general ed courses for the Fall 2013 quarter but I’m wondering which courses I should take for the Winter/Spring 2014 quarter to make me more competitive for a possible Fall 2014 transfer. If not, I’d like to try again Fall 2015 so please list any and all courses that would be smart to take during the remainder of my freshman year or next year’s Fall quarter. Also, if taking a foreign language is THAT much of a necessity then I’ll think things over.

Thank you in advance, and any other information that would be useful to this topic is encouraged and appreciated :)

P.S. I’m interested in transferring from UCR and I’ve spent a good hour or so trying to find these particular statistics but have received no clear answer.

@lucyp94

1) If you take a look at the 2013 transfer decision thread most people that where missing requisites but had good “everything else” got an SGR and then accepted. Others got accepted right away so I guess its a coin flip with some weight on one side.

2)I am on the same boat as you are, CC student from SD with 65 transferable units my only guess is if accepted you get in as a Junior because 64 units qualify you as a junior.

3)If I was you I would take it at my CC no matter what. You are going to an elite school that charges premium for tuition I would not want to waste my time at USC paying for generals while I could be taking other business courses, plus I guarantee you no GE or diversity requirement will be as easy as taking them at a CC, and that is huge just think of how will it affect your GPA taking courses you really don’t care for at USC.

4)I got mixed feelings about this. Most people at college conf. in this, or past threads say they mostly focus on GPA which I think is normal and usual for colleges when looking at transfers, however all the counselors I talked to tell me the same thing “USC is a best all-around student recruiter” and that they really look into your writings and EC’s. IMHO I think the ratio in relevance for GPA is bigger but they will look at your EC’s and writting, not to harshly though if you got a good GPA.

If you can, I would say do something right now whether it is volunteering or anything that you could add to your application, mainly because anything you do in spring won’t go in that application.

By my spring semester, I had 31/32 units completed
I had completed Calc 1 ( stated that I’d be doing calc 2 during the that summer) and completed all except 2 of the categories on the GE requirement. I also took stats. I applied as an undecided but said on my essay that I wanted to go into the sciences. I got into Dornsife. I had about a 3.7 GPA since I took a class at UCI otherwise it was a 3.85 at my community college. My essay was pretty well-developed. I started by talking about something totally irrelevant and menial and progressed it into something big. I think that’s what they look for. You need a great hook that doesn’t talk about your future plans/major.
Now I know it’s really important to get in but the financial aid is even more important. The total cost of attendance is 62,596. I got no financial aid and got 6,500 in federal loans. So my expected family contribution was 56,096. I appealed my financial aid and still did not get anything. Make sure you appeal it and if you can, make a trip to their financial aid office.
Also- I got spring grade requested mostly because I think all first years got spring grade requested. Literally right after I turned in my spring grades they automatically accepted me.
Hope that helped :)

Hello again, everyone.

I have a couple questions about transferring to USC. As I’ve posted before, I attended UCLA for 2 quarters and will be completing a semester (or two, possibly taking summer classes) at community college before hopefully enrolling at USC next fall if admitted.

So first of all, I’m confused about how many units I have. On the UCLA website, it says that I have “52 total units” but if I count the individual units of my classes, I only have 28. I don’t know which to use to convert to semester hours, and besides that, on the USC website, it simply says “if you have less than 30 units”, so I’m not sure if they’re talking units in general or specifically semester units. Color me confused.

Secondly, I looked at the articulation agreement between UCLA and USC and found that only one of my classes fulfills a USC core requirement. Three of them are considered “courses that transfer for credit”. The other two are not listed anywhere.

What does that mean exactly? Will I get elective credit for the classes that “transfer for credit”, and are the other two classes still at least considered part of the units I’ve accumulated?

Thanks for any info.

If I don’t take calculus before the end of Spring 2013 do I stand a chance at Marshall? I have met all the GE prerequisites and have a 3.9 but I will only be able to take the prerequisite for Calc next semester so I don’t know…

@glamiex

Have you taken any other higher math? Are you transferring from a CC?

If you have a 3.9 with everything else covered with good standing some ec’s and good writing(I think in your application you can write that you will be taking it in spring) ofcourse you stand a chance.

@catalinaislander

Since UCLA is in a quarter system that means that you have 52 quarter units, so you need to convert them into semester units by dividing them by 1.5 as stated in the USC website.

So if they transfer for credit that means you get elective units for those(semester units so conversion needed), as far as the other two it depends what classes they are. I think after applying you can petition for them but if its not in your articulation agreement I think its most likely that they won’t. I would say try to do atleast the minimum requirements and as much GE’s as you can.

@fdominguez

Thanks for the feedback. I’m on the same boat with you for those GE requirements. I figured if anything, I can take those courses at a CC at the same time I’m at USC and have them transferred, if that’s allowed atleast.

And I will definitely try to get some EC’s out of the way ASAP. I’m currently an intern at Primerica Inc. (financial services) and a member of the Future Business Leaders Association. With some volunteer hours, and maybe another club at school I think I have a chance.

@lucyp94

I am not to sure if they will let you do that, I have seen on other old threads saying that when you enter USC they don’t let you do GE’s or writing requirements outside, plus isn’t the transfer cap set at 64 units? So I guess even if they let you do GE’s you wont be able to take any outside because you would already be transferring in 64 units.

Again I am not completely sure about this but it seems like the more logical answer at least to me, like I said I am not taking any chances, I am killing it next semester.

How is that Primerica thing? My friend was in it but I lost contact with him never really knew what it was.

hey @mik94! I’m a first year as well and I wanted to know if you completed the foreign language requirement prior to transferring? and if you did, how?

Also, how were your HS grades & EC’s?
