Official USC 2015 Transfer Thread

@NCXfer‌
Thanks!

&I meant more in the sense like … Viterbi applications are handled together (so they wont really be competing with Annenberg applicants). Does that make a bit more sense? haha, sorry about the confusion.

Yeah I was also confused about the foreign language requirement. USC states that they recommend 3 semesters worth of foreign language language before transferring but you only need 1 semester? I don’t understand. Is the requirement 3 semesters of FL to GRADUATE USC or to just transfer to USC?

@beachbum0130 Oh… hmm I never really thought about it that way. I think each individual school has a certain number of spots that are open. I think the only people competing with each other are Viterbi’s vs. Viterbi’s, Marshall’s vs. Marshall’s.

@NCXfer‌ ahh okay. btw, i saw your stats earlier and was just wondering if your a soph or junior transfer?

Well I’m going to have 53ish credits when I enter so I guess I’m like a sophomore and a half haha. All I’m worried about is having over 30 credits so that they forgive my HS transcript.

@iloveasianguys hey man. I was wondering does USC care about how many classes you take? or they only care about the grades?

@lilvietdrew Well you need at least 30 USC transferable units if you don’t want them to look at your HS transcript.

@ahahanjun I think its 3 semesters of FL to graduate USC. I know the one semester isn’t required, just recommended.

@NCXfer‌ so if you complete 1 semester of FL, that fulfills the language requirement when transferring?

@beachbum0130 Yup

@ahahanjun I believe it depends on your major. I had the same problem because I did not do well in my foreign language class in HS so I took two semester of spanish at my CC. I thought I needed a third semester but I couldn’t fit it in my schedule. So I contacted my USC counselor and he said it depends on your major because if you are applying to Marshall as I am then a foreign language is not required.

There are only a few programs (and it is very few), that don’t require three semesters, but rather two, of a foreign language.

While not required to transfer in, knocking out the foreign language requirement often HELPS your odds because admissions feels more comfortable that in programs with dense upper division requirements, you won’t be stuck doing course work many completed their freshman or sophomore year.

School admissions (like Annenberg or Viterbi) look at your application completely separately from Dornsife.

Hi all,
I will be applying to USC dornsife for the fall 2015 semester as a political science major. I am currently a student at a California CC. I spent my first year of college at San Jose State University and I didnt get off to such a great start. I received a 2.0 my first semester, and then got a 3.9 my second. I took 2 summer classes and got A’s in both, and am currently enrolled in 16 units and I WILL be getting straight A’s this semester. With that being said, I will be sending in my application to USC with 48 units, a 3.58 gpa, and a 3.95 gpa since my first semester. I will have a letter of rec from a couple professors as well as one from the director of the USC political science department. EC’s include: food bank volunteer, 25 hours of work per week, 18 hours of an internship at morgan stanley, as well as a few other things. Also I am white, cuban, and mexican. Do you guys think I have a shot!!! Im soooo nervous!!!

@JoeH718‌ how do you manage to get a letter of rec from a USC department director?! that’s crazy! that letter will probably boost your chance by a great margin!

Oh btw, how many classes can I take pass/no pass? I’m planning on making two of my GE course pass/no pass to focus more on major requirements

@lazevike‌ I have a family friend that was able to introduce me to him and I developed a little bit of a relationship with him over the past few months! I sure hope I can get in! I’m so stressed

@lazevike This is from their articulation agreement: No more than 4 units of GE (one course) can be taken pass/no pass. The lower division writing course cannot be taken pass/no pass. No more than 24 units total can be taken pass/no pass (including courses taken at USC). I heard that they really do not like pass/no pass. If you can, try to avoid it.

I’m wondering how much weight they put towards the essays and written responses. Thanks!

Just to be clear, the only essays are what’s on the common app right? I’m not missing something am I??

@nsomu1996‌ … A lot.

@nsomu1996 I think USC is the type of school that would weigh those heavily. They seem to look for the individual, not necessarily the perfect student. Try to stand out if you can.
