Official USC 2015 Transfer Thread

I went to a transfer session previously and I did ask them how much the essays, EC’s, etc all weigh and the man who was presenting said it was mostly merit based for transfer students. So basically, the essays, EC’s, recommendations are less weighed than it is for regular undergraduate applications.

I think performance factors heavily, and maybe that is the case overall, but that’s definitely not the perception from within my school.

Hey guys. I’ve learned a lot from browsing this forum, specifically the transfer section. Just wanted to start off by thanking all who have contributed.

I’m going to be applying to Marshall as a junior. So far I have a 3.68 cumulative average through 52 credits. The first 14 credits I earned at a big public university with a 2.8. Things didn’t go very well over there so I ended up retroactively withdrawing from the following 3 full semesters (if you want to know how, pm me). I took a year off, reevaluated my life and enrolled in a local cc. I’ve earned a 4.0 in the 38 credits since. I joined the PTK honors society and have been on the dean’s list in my two completed semesters. By this semester’s end, I will have completed the requirements for Marshall in addition to macro, micro, managerial and financial accounting (though I might have to take Marshall’s versions as well), statistics, spanish (although not required) and many of the gen ed requirements for graduation.

I’m getting involved at school by running for a leadership position in a community service oriented club as well as volunteering as a peer mentor for ESL students. I plan on keeping up my grades, taking the time to well polish my essays and securing some well written letters of recommendation. I’ve also spent the past 3 summers interning at a credit default swap brokerage firm/desk, a residential real estate brokerage firm and a prominent NYC defense attorney’s office, respectively. How do you guys think I fare? Does being Cuban help? What about taking honors courses? Also, is anybody interested in proof reading each others’ essays when the time comes? Thanks in advance to those who respond. Good luck peeps.

Does anyone know how you can send two transcripts to USC? AFAIK I just need to do the common app, have both schools send my transcript away? I’m going to be talking to my CC’s counseling office about it on Monday, but they’re never that helpful and I think they only know information about the UC’s and CSU’s.

Also, classes don’t end until June 22nd for me. I’m guessing that if USC is interested they’ll ask for a SGR? Especially since I don’t finish my science+lab requirement until that last quarter. Is sending those grades so ‘late’ going to hurt me? Thanks!

@Deezknutz I’m in a similar boat with a 4.0 at my CC, 2.9 at my old university. Thankfully all those credits at my old university are all pretty much non-major related.

I’m not the most knowledgeable about what USC looks for, but I know for a fact that USC likes an upward trend in grades. The written requirements are also pretty important as well. Good luck to you!

@stanx89‌ I will also be applying for Business Administration Fall 2015, do you NEED to complete the lower-division MATH 118 requirement before transfer?

By fall 2015 I will have fulfilled:
Diversity
First Year Writing
Western Cultures & Traditions
Global Cultures
Scientific Inquiry
Arts and Letters

with around 47 quarter units

These mofos don’t take spring transfers? facepalm

Hi everyone! I want to transfer to USC as a Political Science Major at Fall 2015. I have done 31 units, however by the time I finish my application for USC I will have done 47 units. I go to a California CC right now and I have overall GPA of 3.81. (I am trying to get a 4.0 this semester to increase that GPA to 3.88). By the time I transfer to USC if I get in I will finish all GE requirements. My ec activities including member of the AGS and Desi Club at my CC. I also created a petition. I have done some community service in India, and an internship in India. Guys do I have a chance of getting in? I’m really stressing out so please anybody who knows reply lol.

@desiboy24 you’re probably in. Good luck!

How bad is it if my foreign language isn’t completed with my application or isn’t being taken next semester? Can I just take it at sc if I’m admitted?!

@jch718 It depends what major you are.

@ahahanjun‌ well I know it needs to be taken for dornsife(which I’m applying to) but can I just take the placement test and take it there, or should it be done?

Anyone went to the transfer day event? how was it? I went to the transfer information session and its basically a repetition of the information that’s available online.

Guys I have a question.

Is it true that USC calculates your overall GPA by including repeated courses and previous courses?

Because if this is the case, I really doubt my GPA is 3.5 if they really do count courses that you failed that you retake.

You are correct, the university doesn’t recognize grade forgiveness… But it does factor in positive trends.

I know that usc LOVES upward trends but what do they look more positively at? Maintaining a 4.0 throughout or having an upward trend from let’s say 3.5 and up?

I’ll be applying to Viterbi as a CS major. Was wondering if it’s at all possible to transfer w/ only a semester of Chem lab. I’m on the waitlist for my first chem + lab course and I’m not entirely sure if I’ll get the class. I know in the USC transfer guide it says that applicants typically have one year of lab among other requirements. I would have all the other reqs finished. Obviously I’m in full panic mode right now, I’m thinking I might have to take a third year at CC!

Also, if I can’t get into this chem course I’ll probably be taking a USC general ed from one of the five categories. If I went this route, I’ll have Cat I, II, III, and V completed.

Any insight? Thanks guys.

Hey everyone! I’m applying to USC as a transfer and I’m a little confused with the writing supplement part. Do i have to complete each paragraph, even the ones that don’t apply to me?
ex)
For each college or university term (excluding summer) in which you were enrolled in less than four semester-unit courses or three quarter-unit courses, please provide a brief explanation as to why you were unable to enroll full time. (250 word limit)

Thanks :)

so do we have to contact our high school and ask them to send a copy of our transcript to USC?, also do we need to go on collegeboard and send our SAT scores?

@tarrrrssss‌ Hmm… I actually don’t know what prompt you are referring to… I only have the two USC prompt and the common app. Where do you see those prompts?

@munyi123‌ Yes. Eventually you will have to send your high school transcript to USC and the other colleges you are applying to prove that you have completed High School or something to indicate you have a GED or something equivalent. I believe you only need to send your SAT scores if you have less than 30 transferrable units.

Hey! Hypothetical situation: if I were to attain a 4.0 this semester, complimented by some decent EC’s (student government, school newspaper, teach low-income students in Mexico English, ect), should I still apply for sophomore transfer? I’m kind of hesitant to do so since 1) HS GPA was 3.48 3) SAT was pretty low and 3) since I’m predominantly working on the prereqs for Davis and SB, so I’d only have 4 areas of USC’s GE done by next spring. Should I still apply Feb, or would that be a waste of time? Thanks in advance for any help! :)
