Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 3 years of XC (captain, varsity), 4 years of indoor & outdoor track, She’s the First school branch (founder/president), Red Cross Club, NHS, Key Club, many years of Irish dance
Job/Work Experience: Grader and assistant teacher at Kumon for 2 years, some brief food service work prior to that that I didn’t mention
Volunteer/Community service: Residential volunteer at Camp Holiday Trails (run by UVA Hospital), teen volunteer at local hospital, lots of smaller volunteer jobs
Summer Activities: Volunteering, working, babysitting, cross country
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Not sure how I would rate them, but my main Common App one and the two short essays for UVA were probably the combination of essays that I was most proud of through all my applications. The words flowed naturally, and I felt that the essays really pulled my application together well.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10, a teacher of two years across two different disciplines with whom I share a lot of mutual respect. He knows my learning and classroom abilities well.
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10, a teacher I loved and enjoyed her class (AP Capstone), but I wasn’t as close with her as with the other. She is a UVA alumni, though, so I’m not sure if that helped in any way.
Counselor Rec: 6-7/10? Not really sure here! He knew me much better than the average student but still, I go to a very big school and he had many recommendations to write. I appreciate his effort in all ways.

Reflection

Strengths: I was really proud of my essays for UVA. In addition, I feel that I’m a fairly well rounded student without seeming contrived. I just got involved and worked hard at the things I loved.
Weaknesses: A couple of my grades in classes could have been much better.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Refer to strengths!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: So far, accepted at Villanova, JMU, and Pitt. I’m waiting on 5 more!

General Comments: I’m over the moon. My acceptance doesn’t feel real yet! I’ve been in love with UVA since I was 12. Congratulations to all those that were accepted and many hugs to those that were deferred/rejected. We will all end up at the place we’re meant to be at.

Accepted with a 4.04W and 3.6UW from NOVA. UVA is holistic folks work hard on those essays and activities too! Happy to be a Wahooo! Good luck to all!

ACT (breakdown): 31
SAT II: n/a
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8/4.2w
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 15%
AP (place score in parenthesis): Euro (4), psychology (5), Lang (5), physics 1 (2 lol, didn’t report that one), Spanish and stats this year so haven’t taken
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: a little lacking, 2 AP’s, a rigorous double credit course unique to my school, and fluff
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nothing really that major, little fluffy stuff

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): decent. (Senior VP) of a local community service group, NHS, SHS, other local service programs, I’m a pilot
Job/Work Experience: lots of work experience, positions in many different business related fields, customer service, sales, basically had a job since 6th grade.
Volunteer/Community service: plenty through the EC’s mentioned
Summer Activities: Worked at a summer camp
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I guess maybe a 7-8 on both. I thought UVA got some of my best essays, but not enough to get me in I guess. Common app essay was about flying and I thought it was pretty good, uva supplementals reflected my personality well. The grammar and mechanics were fine.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): of course haven’t read them, but I’d expect a 10 from both teachers. Know and love both teachers very well, and I think my counselor put extra effort into mine because I was the morehead Cain nominee for my school.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted Miami oh, Clemson, SMU, still waiting on my #1 and #2 but this kinda killed my confidence haha.

State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey (NOT IN STATE)
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: White

Income Bracket: +200K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection
Strengths: I applied for the humanities/arts department with 2 arts portfolios, I do what I love and I love what I do– I never did any of it for colleges!
Weaknesses: I was applying to Stanford at the same time so I spent more time on that app.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Good grades/scores, great art portfolios

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ACCEPTED STANFORD 2021!!! GO CARDINAL!

General Comments: To all of you who were denied entry, please know that it will work out. The acceptance rate is silly and it has nothing to do with you as a student. Don’t doubt yourself because of this– you will be stronger in the end. Good luck on your other apps, but I’m sure you will end up where you belong.
And to those applying– DO WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO AND DO IT A LOT! It will come across. Don’t spread yourself too thin by being “well-rounded” because, frankly, being a lopsided ameba with one really fantastic, super awesome strength is just as good, if not better. GO AMEBAS!!!

Weaknesses: Lack of a second good SAT II score, gpa
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Demonstrated passion
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

General Comments:
As many people have said before me, do not be well-rounded! I wasn’t the valedictorian, I have no hooks, and I’m OOS. Dig deep into whatever you like and build your entire application around that!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I: 1470 (740 reading, 730 math)
ACT: 32 (35,32,31,30)
SAT II: 690 Math 1, 750 Math 2 (lol)

Major Awards (USAMO, etc.): Eagle Scout, Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Scholarship, New Century Leadership, Senior Class president, Superintendent Advisory board, baseball team captain/1st team all-district junior year, Young Entrepreneurs of Lubbock President, among others

Subjective:
Extracurriculars:

  • Founder of a drone club, combining it with the University in my city and the superintendent of my school district to use the university’s resources and spread it to each school in the district.
  • Research assistant in a project researching the survival of Quail who lose 80% of their pop. annually.
  • Lots of volunteering w/ Boy Scouts
  • baseball, school clubs, NCL, etc.
Job/Work Experience: Junior counselor at two summer camps, including a Boy Scout camp where I taught classes
Volunteer/Community service: Over 300 hours from roughly 4 organizations
Summer Activities: Baseball, Quail project, drone project
Essays: 9-10. Wrote my common app over how I ran for class president as a demagogue and how no one noticed. Wrote my supplement over how I created the drone project and by taking such initiative I became a more developed person while honoring my grandfather and doing something I love.
Recommendations: I would assume a 9-10. I had my biology and English teachers write them. On top of those, I had my former counselor/family friend and the professor whom I am working with for the drone project write one.

No Interview

Teacher Rec #1 (rating 1-10, details): 9-10. I excelled in English and always did my best to help my very caring teacher. She wrote on how I was a leader of our grade even before I was the class pres. Furthermore, she is the senior Stuco rep and has seen me be a leader there.
Teacher Rec #2 (rating 1-10, details): 8-10. My biology teacher has always liked me. I did very well in her difficult class. She wanted to be my EE advisor before I quit IB, and even though I didn’t know her as well, she always liked me.
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details): 6-9. I don’t know my counselor really at all. She is nice and thinks of me as a good kid because I am more patient than everyone else she deals with. Apparently she writes good letters.
Additional Rec (if any) (rating 1-10, details): Former Counselor 8-10. Writes beautiful letters and knows me well. The professor 9-10. I have worked with her for several months and she has seen me take a lot of initiative. She is a professor of medicine and engineering, 2-star army general, vegan, and a former homeland security director of New Mexico so she holds a lot of authority
Interview (if any) (rating 1-10, details): 6. In many ways, awkward. It wasn’t conversational for most of it, but he was a pleasant guy.

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Biology
State: (west) Texas
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M
Income Bracket: 100,000-250,000 (guess)
Hooks: Definitely my drone project and how I told them through the essays. I show a lot of leadership in general, and I am sure my letters supported that strongly. Furthermore, my essay was about quoting Hitler, Stalin, etc. and how it helped me win my presidency. Really interesting. Also the Eagle Scout piece and Quail project.

Reflections:
Strengths: Essays, Rec letters, GPA/workload, Resume, doing something out of my curriculum
Weaknesses: low ACT/SAT, white male w/no legacy, good not great high school
Why you think you were accepted: I have a really unique set of views and have pursued them well and efficiently. I also wrote well and demonstrate initiative and curiosity. Plus qualifying scores
Where else were you accepted: SMU (rd revealed early) w/ $, UMichigan, UT Austin, Texas A&M,
Harvard

Waiting on Chicago, WashU, Vandy

General Comments (if any):
Don’t be discouraged if you have a low ACT/SAT. Be realistic, but honestly, you never know. I didn’t think I had a shot, especially because I only have one decent score, but I pushed myself outside the curriculum by far while engaging those in my community. Two more things. One, pull every string you have. I edited my essays till I thought they were perfect. I showed almost all my teachers, my former babysitters, everyone. Actually, the people that helped the most were the parents of a kid on my brother’s baseball team. Everyone I talked to poked holes straight through my paper that made it out to be great. Don’t be afraid to use every favor you have because you only have one chance to apply. Also, go all out on this. A week before I turned this in, I literally stayed up till 3 am and woke up at 6 every day just to make them absolutely perfect. Before then it wasn’t much better.

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): regional awards for debate and outstanding delegate at Harvard Model Congress Asia

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

Harvard Model Congress Asia [9-12] [Captain 10, 11, 12] [Honorable Mention 1x] [Outstanding Delegate 2x]
Online Model United Nations [Executive Administrative Officer for Korea] – Organize debates online for students who enjoy MUN around the world. I teach parliamentary procedure and moderate debates, which give me excellent experience for a MUN conference later in the year.

Varsity Tennis [Captain 12] [Most Improved 10] [Far East Tennis 9-12] – Not much to show.
Student Council [Class VP 9] [Class President 10] [Class Parliamentarian 11] [Class Secretary 12]
Hiking – I enjoy hiking on weekends.

Minjoo Party of Korea – Worked for a local representative’s office during the 2016 Korean parliamentary elections.

Seosan Law Firm – internship at a law firm that helped me understand the courtroom better and confirmed my initial interests in the law.

DoDEA Pacific Advisory Council – selected to represent over 10,000 students at an education board that includes the director of our school region.

Global Mission Church – Pianist for the praise team; humanitarian projects through the church.

Job/Work Experience: summer translator job online (Korean-english, english-korean)… did not include.
Volunteer/Community service: through church, NHS… also did not really mention.
Summer Activities: some listed above, and if there were a short essay about my summer, I would have written “spent hours perfecting my serve.”
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App – 7/8 : I wrote about how my curiosities lead me to do different things, and basically used a story where my curiosity about Robert’s Rules of Order (checking out the book in a library) and the book’s deceptive cover led me to wonder why governments have to have such strict procedure, revealing me to the world of debate.

CAS essay – 7 : Honest. I wrote about an experience of listening to rap music, which was turned on by a walk-on on the tennis team (there was no football team at our school this year lmao). I wrote about how I became more tolerant as I listened to rap and focused on the lyrics.

Supplemental essay - 8: Wrote about how I write differently in style from day to day in my English writing notebook. I said the notebook is a wonderful way to think about what I had been like on that specific day. I also said this habit helped me to review my work, however cheesy the writing was.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 9 – APUSH teacher. Great letter. We’re really close, and it showed (I might have added some lines)
Teacher Rec #2: 6 – AP Chem / AP Physics teacher. I’m not sure about this one… I gave him a guideline about what to write, but I have not read it.
Counselor Rec: 7 – Have not read it; we’re close, but I feel like she uses a template. Not sure.
