I am at George Mason University. Transfering b/c its hard to find programs here that have the depth and rigor to train you in fields I think are cool- especially real estate, private equity, investments analysis, etc (for those who say Mason has a good real estate program- it is open to grad students only! grrrr they won’t let me in w/o work experience either).

So what do you guys think of my chances?
I know its probably a reach…

HS Stats:
GPA: 3.4 UW 4.0 W
SAT: 2090 (760 M 710 W 620 R)
SAT II: 740 Korean, 710 Math 2, 680 Bio E
Took 8 AP Classes, Passed all but one.
EC: 3 Years of Track and field, won a couple of awards
Volunteered at hospital and taught korean

College: Transferring from Cali CC, Current freshman, Bio Major
GPA: 3.12 (I only took 17 units and one of them was a 5 unit Calculus class in which I got a C, currently taking 14 units, and if I get all A’s this semester, which I am so far, then i end up with a 3.52)
EC: Hospital internship in which I help nurses with patients and all that good stuff…

I realize that UVa is a great school, but do you guys think I have any chance? I’m going to send in a mid term report to show them I’m getting A’s so far…

Also,
what did you guys think of the supplemental essays? the second one was a bit strange…

Just popped over to say good luck everyone!! I was in your shoes this time last year, so I know how hard waiting can be. Not too much longer though :)

@Ktdid92
Transferring from NVCC, out of most four year universities I looked at, UVA was by far my favorite. In the end it was either James Madison, W&M, or UVA. I have friends at all three universities, but after visiting the campuses, it was clear which one I loved more.
(Aye, plenty of friends at VT also, hope I won’t hate their guts too much? :o)

The second supplement essay had the choice of one out of two topics, the first was about an item that represented the human race, and the other was a local, national, or international issue that concerned you. I thought the first essay choice was rather hard, I wrote three essays, one on the first topic and two on the second.
After reading my first essay, concerning the item that represented the human race, it didn’t sound like me, and certainly not something I would be extremely interested in, so it was discarded.
My other two essays were about my cat’s recent coughing, and the differences in education between the east and the west, and their influences on me.
Needless to say, I chose the latter to submit, though I did enjoy writing about my cat. (It counts as a local issue right? :>)

@brishe HIIIII!!! Haha, you sure it won’t be a long and painful wait? I read through every page of last year’s official transfer thread, and I can’t WAIT! I wish I can leap a couple months ahead in time! :P

Haha, I liked the “what would you send to the moon” question. It allowed a little more creativity than your average “Why transfer?” question.

i chose that one too… but i had a hard time thinking of something to send that wouldn’t be done by other applicants…

What program are you trying to enter?

Also, did anyone else not get their SIS yet? I submitted on the 29th and it says there should be a 5-7 day delay.

I’m applying to CAS from New York University’s CAS in Manhattan with a 3.4 GPA as a sophomore fall transfer. Does what school you come from have an impact on admittance?

I’m trying to enter CAS.

I got my sis the next day so… i don’t know…

@markyang27
They will probably place more of an emphasis on your HS performance since you are a freshman. Honestly I don’t know as much about CAS as I do about McIntire, so I can’t say what they look for in an applicant.

@smw475
Coming from a prestigious university def helps, although not as much as being from a Virginia CC. If I knew I was going to transfer I would have gone to NOVA.

Johnny ya I haven’t got the SIS either but we might get it after spring break. maybe.

By the way I was wondering how do my chances look, I don’t feel like I’m that competitive…

Current School: George Mason first year
High School GPA: 3.8
College GPA: 3.98 first semester
SAT Scores Reading: 570 Math:800 Writing:580
Applying to engineering

Hey good luck guys, I hope you all get accepted.
I’m not applying but I know the question about what you want to send into space.
What did you guys pick? XD

I treated my essay as sort of a piece of creative writing…I sort of got deeper with it than I meant to haha. I said I would send a doll because it represents human consumption and vanity as well as human love. And mortality most of all, since a plastic doll probably wouldn’t last in outer space.

@speddy93, if you’re in-state, you probably have a decent chance. Your reading/writing SATs are on the low side, but having an 800 in math is probably more important since you want to be an engineer.

@Speddy93
Go to UVA’s SIS website and request one if it has been more than 5-7 days since you submitted your application. Its an automated process so I just got mine. For engineering, I think you have pretty good odds w/ an 800 math and a 3.98 in your first semester. Its an excellent program, one of my friends graduated last year and he had multiple offers with 70k as the base salary!

@ktdid92, those are some profound thoughts right there. I tried something deep but it ended up being really cheesy so I just did the other topic.

Should I be worried that they haven’t received my HS/ College transcripts yet? I sent them in early February and I know they were sent because I asked for email confirmation from GMU/ FHS. Are they on anyone else’s to do list?

I tried to be kinda original and said a calendar. While it may not be of use, it shows that people value heroes (like martin luther king jr, abe lincoln, etc.) and festive days (thanksgiving, christmas) and shows that we admire those who have done good deeds and that we appreciate festivities and celebrate people.

lol it might have been a stretch… but can’t do anything about it now…

Thanks for the confidence boost guys.

@JohnnyBazooka
Thanks for letting me know about the SIS account. I finally got my account and logged in today. Also I seem to be having the same problem as you, both of my transcripts are still on my to do list. I think I might just wait another week and see if it updates otherwise I might send an email to check.

@speddy93. yeah just wait, i sent them an email last week because i sent my transcript a longgg time ago, but it said it was on my to do list, but they said they don’t have the personnel to check individual things for people… (i was like ***)… but within the next couple days, it went off.

I got that massage also so i called the dean and got it done!

My To-Do List cleared! yayyyy

Is anyone from a “Tier 1” university, and if so, what is the course load like? Assuming we all make it, I assume it is accurate to say that UVA will be much more difficult that GMU.
