***Official UW Class of 2022 Decision Thread***

@bloomfield88 Many universities are clear when graduates reach a high level of success or status but understanding where alumni end up would rely on those alumni providing accurate and true data. Self reporting data is not necessarily good data that translates into useful information. Your daughter sounds like she has great options.

Does anyone here how direct admit/honors program admit students? I think my stats(1540 SAT, 2 800 1 790 1 740 SAT 2, and >4.0 GPA) are above the average of those who’re accepted, but got rejected from both direct and honors.

Direct to which major? Could being out of state be part of the problem?

Honors at UW is somewhat unpredictable. They definitely don’t just look at your stats, and they are serious about selecting for interdisciplinary interests and talent. Once admitted to your major, departmental honors are still available to you even if you’re not in interdisciplinary honors.

UW does not consider subject tests.

I live in WA and I applied to CS and mathematics. I also think that I clearly demonstrated my interest in AI(machine learning, data science) and finance(I chose mathematics because knowing stochastic process would be good for finance, learning more stats would be needed for AI study, and personally like solving hard problems).

@Faexpopuli , that is really strange. UW mostly admit people based on stats, and your stats is clearly in the top quartile. Among my son’s high stats classmates and friends, I only know one guy who’s NMF and did not get into direct admit.

What other college choices do you have?

CS is crazy competitive. It’s just one of those reach-for-everyone majors. My understanding is that they don’t consider you for direct admit to your second choice major.

As far as interdisciplinary honors goes, they don’t really define interdisciplinary as two different branches of STEM. They really want to see your interest in the humanities. And again, honors decisions have definitely seemed a little random to me as an outsider seeing who got in among my two kids’ peers.

@bogeyorpar Not much. I got admitted to NYU and UCSB and waitlisted from UChicago and UCLA.

.

Both NYU and UCSB are expensive options. Are you admitted to UCSB’s CS department? That’s a good CS program with a nice campus. And if you want to work on Wall Street (less high tech, but lots of $$$), NYU is the best.

If you go to UW, I think your chance of getting into CS and honors are high. Both can be applied to in the second year. As I mentioned in another thread, the Allen School reserved at least 200 spots for regular CS admit (i.e. the second year applicants.)

Regarding Honors program, we went to a few info sessions and I found all student representatives are girls. I asked one of the advisors privately, “do you know the gender makeup of the honors program?” She refused to answer with exact numbers, but said, “Yes, girls are way more than boys in the program, and we are actively recruiting boys to apply.” So, if you are a boy, you have a good chance of getting in.

Are colleges supposed to use gender in admissions to any program? I learned that the sc banned race based AA in public institutions.

@Faexpopuli

No, they can’t decide admissions based on gender, but they can recruit and seek more applicants based on who is currently underrepresented.

I wouldn’t let lack of interdisciplinary honors at UW mean anything. Read over their selection criteria again – you can see how writing about honors helping you get a career in finance would not help your cause: https://honors.uw.edu/apply/

Get involved in the undergraduate research program instead. Consider applying to get into the honors math sequence (math 134). There are plenty of challenges at UW without being in the interdisciplinary honors program, including departmental honors once you have declared you major.

Admisson to the CS major is NOT just based on stats because it is way oversubscribed. Ignore that response.

@AroundHere I looked up Math134, and I think I will be done with most of the topics covered by it by this year. I took Multivariavle calculus last year and currently self studying linear algebra and differential equation. I think if I spend more time studying those after AP tests, I would be able to finish those. Does UW acknowledge non-AP classes and knowledge gained from self-studying?

@Faexpopuli

No, they do not generally waive prereqs
https://math.washington.edu/registration-information

All the kids in math 134 have already had calculus, many have self-taught beyond that and/or participated in national math competitions.

If you’re serious about becoming a math major, consider it (but take seriously the warning about the homework load!) The full sequence that starts with math 134 covers the material in 5 regular math classes, but in greater depth and challenge, over just 3 courses. You can get to the advanced math classes in fewer quarters this way.

@AroundHere But if I already know what I would learn from the class, what would be the point of taking it? Are the problems from the class challenging like ones from IMO, Putnam or problem sets from Harvard 55? Or would I learn more about application of theorems in engineering? How would taking math 134 be different from self-studying/taking hs classes? Were you in the class? I would appreciate if you share your experiences/ what you know about math 134.

I am a parent so I have friends’ kids who have done it. It’s for those interested in a deeper understanding of mathematics, not for engineering/finance applications. Putnam preparation is separate from this class, but that’s the type of student the class is geared for.

You were complaining about not getting into the honors program, so I was showing the departmental honors options that might still be available to you as a possible math major, but I’m kinda done. You can search on math 134 (and the second-year math 334 series) on the math department website, and talk to the math department advisor. You have to discuss the class with advising to make sure you’re capable of the work and a fit for the class before being allowed to register anyway, and they could answer your questions better than I could.

Has anyone from the waitlist heard back yet?

@Uwhalp Waitlist discussion thread here http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-washington/2062953-uw-class-of-2022-waitlist.html

Has anyone received their housing notification? I called the housing office a couple of days ago and they said they should be sending out emails to priority 1 housing applicants by the end of this week…and to be clear, the notification would give the appointment time to actually log in and choose a room…

Some students who chose North campus dorms as first preference have already received notification to choose rooms. My son and his friends who choose West campus dorms are still waiting. They said “late June”, so I guess that means today or tomorrow.

@BayAreaMom15 , as we predicted, son just received his notice to the appointment time. Have your son/daughter receive it yet?
