Official Vanderbilt University Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

Whats up y’all,
Ive been reading this post since its creation but have abstained from posting because ive been pretty busy and i didnt want to get caught up in it. I guess the wait got the best of me. Im a Jr. transfer from missouri state. here are my stats:

H/S GPA 4.8 weighted, 33 ACT
valedictorian
College 3.86 GPA (honors track), 48 credits completed-taking 16 this term as well
intern with merrill lynch last summer
mens varsity soccer team at missouri state, go bears! haha
other ECs, and academic accolades but those come last in app anyway
rec letters: one of profs said i was in top 3% of his students over 27 yr span of teaching, other one will also be pretty great i suspect
essays are well-written, spent alot of time on them
hooks: legacy (both parents), family is member of national commodore club

My only worry is that college of arts and sciences is extremely competitive, and especially for economics major because that is very popular at vandy. Also my pop told me last week that his associate in the alumni network said they are planning on accepting more transfers, but that is because they anticipate more are applying( keeping rate at around 40%). What do y’all think of my stats? I know this isnt a chance thread, but it seems like everyone has been doing it anyway. Some will ask why i didnt apply to vandy after HS- I was recruited by Miss St for mens soccer and thats my passion. Vandy doesnt have a team(even though their club team is one of best in nation!) However, several injuries have forced me to stop playing and instead I want to enjoy my last 2 years at vandy because i have friends and family there and it is the place to be.

I think you stand a great chance of being admitted.

Your numbers and ECs are really good. Also, I have no clue how much emphasis Vanderbilt in particular places on being a legacy, but I know that some schools view this as a huge plus (assuming that the rest of the candidate’s application is strong as well, as is the case with you).

@Vandyhopeful93 you’ll get in for sure…you had the stats in HS but chose to go somewhere to play D1 sports…totally makes sense as a reason to go to a “lesser” school academically. I think you’d be very competitive at places higher up in the rankings than Vandy as well.

Vandyhopeful, I think you have a great shot. Great grades and scores, as well as ECs. Sorry about your injuries. Playing D1 soccer would be a dream come true.

Hey thanks guys for the quick reply. I agree my stats are pretty good im not one of those kids who says a 4.8 or 33 is horrible to get attention or reassurance. Like i said my only serious concern is my major. I have been stalking the boards of probably 12 other schools and it is consistently the economics and engineering majors who are stronger applicants. Plus, vandy doesnt have undergrad business so all of those students are on the econ track as well. In addition, ony 7 percent of all vandy students transfer out and my father did some research and told me its practically 0 for econ majors. This is because many want to go into the business world and econ at vandy is pretty much ony option for that if u want to be taken seriously. I am seriously considering just applying for like history or marketing idk haha i wont actually because my app is ready to submit but it has crossed my mind. If they had a business program id be much more confident bc econ at vandy is very competitive due to the extremely high retention rate and prominence of the program. What is everyone else applyig to? Thanks again for the positive support. Good luck to everyone.

The supplement asks for your first and second choices, so you can always put economics as your first choice and a less-common major as your second choice. I applied as a (1) history major and (2) mathematics major, and I would be happy gaining acceptance into either one of those programs because I am very interested in both subjects.

Yeah i have a secondary major down already but unlike you itd be a downer if i only got into that one because ive set my whole academic and career path and app around econ. I dont wanna just switch to like poli sci all of a sudden otherwise i would. It also seems like they will evaluate app based on primary target and then they will go back if they have extra space in the secondary one or you are an exceptional applicant but not good enough for first. But yeah i hear what youre saying. Good luck with the process.

That’s not such great news for me. Econ here.

Yeah no kidding. Hopefully we both get in and dont have to worry about anything else.

Hi all,
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could chance me.
H/S GPA 5.13/5, I would say a 3.7ish unweighted, 32 ACT: 33 Eng and 32 Math 12 writing
College: 3.86 GPA 15 credits 33 at end of semester
ECs: I have a pretty good list but my best ones are research at my university.
Essay: Pretty good, I spent a lot of time on them and had them checked by my school’s writing center and my academic advisor who is an English major.
School/major: Arts and Sciences and majoring in Biochemistry

Sophomore transfer btw

lelouch, I think you’ve got a very good chance!

Still pouring over last years thread… The paranoia and anxiety is real, ahhhh brb going crazy.

I feel so sorry for you guys…sorta :(

Now I’m just waiting for a rejection, given what was said above about econ majors.

what’s the earliest we can expect a decision by based on last years threads? I just mailed my midterms out today and sent in everything else needed earlier this week.

anontransfer93: Thank you very much  Your opinion of my stats has given me a confidence boost haha! I hope that my chances are that good; does affirmative action still play a somewhat big role in transfer admissions, I’m asian and I’m hoping I don’t get hurt too bad as compared to applying from high school.

Also if anyone else would like to give me their opinion of my chances, I would greatly appreciate that as well. Thank you :)

@Yolocholo
The earliest you will hear is mid April. From what I have read, the priority deadline is March 15, so hypothetically speaking it doesn’t really make a difference whether you have everything submitted by February 15 or March 14. Once the priority deadline is passed, the applications are reviewed and decisions will be mailed.

Good luck to everyone applying!

Hey, I’m interested in applying, and I haven’t had a chance to visit the campus yet. If anyone out there has, I was wondering: is there a noticeable sense of community between students who go there? I’m coming from a university where a lot of students tend to mesh together within their own ‘types,’ which was surprising for a school that was so diverse. I’m just hoping that Vanderbilt has a quality of unity between students that other similar universities may not be able to provide.
Also, how is Nashville as a resource (and distraction :P) for students? That’s a huge factor for me: I come from a small town, and I really want to get connected in a university campus where students can harmonize on campus and still be adventurous enough to explore the city around them.

Thanks a bunch!
P.S. idk if people are still interested in what the applicant pool looks like but if it helps I can post my stats for those who are still trying to get a feel for what it’s looking like.
