Official Waitlist Discussion 2015

^ Right.

Though I will withdraw my name from waitlist once I get into any good school.

What do you guys have to say about sending a peer recommendation to Chicago, detailing why I’ll be a perfect fit, followed by a letter from me a few days later re-emphasising my interest. It’s one of my dream schools :(

Were you expecting a rejection or an acceptance?
Honestly, I don’t “expect” anything from colleges, especially a place as high caliber as UChicago. I was deferred EA, and I knew there had been a great increase in apps everwhere this year, so I definitely didn’t expect acceptance.

Give a reason why you think you were waitlisted?
No idea? The version of my long common app I sent UChicago was not its best. My scores are well within the accepted range, I took the most rigorous schedule offered at my school, and I had a good interview. Not sure, and not analyzing it too deeply lol.

Planning to stay “officially” on the waitlist?
I don’t think so… I’ll see where else I get in.

Which other colleges have you been already accepted to/ got likely?
Wash U, UMichigan, OSU, and Case

Applied for FA? If yes, what’s your EFC?
No

Wow IMClear, thats kind of a jacka** thing to do (asking to be on the waitlist) to those who sincerely want to go to Chicago, not just because it is prestigious. =(

Haha, thanks.

Is the protocol for waitlisted people same as the deferral protocol (update the admissions office about continued interest and new achievements)? Oh dear I will hate writing emails detailing why I like the schools that waitlisted me…

Were you expecting a rejection or an acceptance?

100% Rejection.

Give a reason why you think you were waitlisted? Well, a bunch:

 1. Decided to apply at 11:51 PM the day it was due…rushed essay
 2. Handed in supplement 5ish days late
 3. Didn’t feel like picking an essay topic to write about that Chicago gave me, so I just submitted one I did for another college
 4. Applied to a nonexistent school in Chicago (whoops :o)
 5. Declined (ignored) interview, no visit, no tour, didn’t really show any interest…
 6. Just applied becuase I had already applied to 15 and wanted to make it an even number.

Planning to stay “officially” on the waitlist? Nopeeeee

Which other colleges have you been already accepted to/ got likely? Likely UCLA Undecided Engineering (accepted), UCSD, UConn Honors, Georgia Tech BME, RPI

Applied for FA? If yes, what’s your EFC? Yup, EFC= 0

Best of luck to all waitlisted applicants!

Hey guys, on my UChicago Account, the “upload material” section was re-added. Yet, under the list of things I could be sending it, it says: “international forms” and “Passport.” Is this the same for those of you who chose to remain on the waitlist, or was there a mix up and now Chicago things I’m an international student?

^It’s there for everyone, but it says to disregard it if Chicago didn’t request any of those things from you.

Let me just say that I think tufts syndrome is very likely. In the past, UChicago never had T.S. because it has its “Uncommon Application”, which required a lot of work for hopefuls. However this year, being the first year they shifted to the common app, they experienced a flood of HPYSM applicants looking for a safety school. The overqualified applicants who devoted time and passion to their essays were accepted nonetheless. Those such as yours truly threw together a “prompt” that fit another essay got politely denied admission.

Were you expecting a rejection or an acceptance? After my college interviewer talked about the switch from the uncommon to common app, I got a bad feeling…

Give a reason why you think you were waitlisted? Tufts syndrome combined with lack of flowing passion; also got convinced by college interviewers to reveal college list

Planning to stay “officially” on the waitlist? no

Which other colleges have you been already accepted to/ got likely? MIT

Applied for FA? If yes, what’s your EFC? no

^Edit - stats on MIT page; 2350 SAT and an app that speaks for itself : P

This is not the first year UChicago is using the CommonApp; you have been misinformed.

I definitely don’t think that ‘Tufts Syndrome’ has been a factor for you (or for anyone else). Why is it so hard to accept that UChicago has its own criteria for selecting applicants that may not be the same as, say, MIT’s?

Only 2% of the waitlist is eventually admitted according to the Princeton Review…

I found a [good article about waitlisted students](Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: The Waitlist 2010) on the UVa blog. Yeah, this isn’t Chicago, but they shouldn’t be too different. It’s pretty informative, especially if you’re like me–didn’t expect a gray offer and had no idea about what you should do if you are waitlisted.

Were you expecting a rejection or an acceptance?
I, like many others, am very cynical about colleges. That being said their mail is a little deceiving.

Give a reason why you think you were waitlisted?
No math senior year, maybe a little weak on the EC’s?

Planning to stay “officially” on the waitlist?
Yeah, unless I get into Middlebury.

Which other colleges have you been already accepted to/ got likely?
University of Edinburgh, University of St. Andrews, University of Durham

Applied for FA? If yes, what’s your EFC? No

^Ghostt
Really? Well that’s what my two Chicago Interviewers said.
I have no problem with the WL, as I have no intention of attending.

Were you expecting a rejection or an acceptance?

Well, I was very cynical about an acceptance since the only news I heard before were rejections from Tulane, UCLA, and WashU, so I would have to say I was expecting a rejection. I was so disheartened and nervous when I got the e-mail I made my friend open it and give me the presumed bad news, though when he said I was wait-listed I immediately started playing my Liza Minnelli concert CD and dancing on air. At least it’s not a rejection!

Give a reason why you think you were waitlisted?

Not too sure, but perhaps my mediocre SAT/ACT scores (1950/29). I spent a LOT of time doing my essays for UoC because it’s tied for my first choice with Yale, and my college counselor said those essays were the best I had written for any college (so probably not my rockin’ essays). I would probably fault my Commonapp essay too - I wrote about how TV has been a huge influence in my life (it makes me sound slightly illiterate/ditzy).

Planning to stay “officially” on the waitlist?

Most definitely! I absolutely fell in love with UoC when learning about it to write about “why UChicago”, and put so much time and effort to create a really phenomenal “why this college” essay because I’m so passionate about the school. If I get into Yale though (inner cynic highly doubts this) I will go there and withdraw from the waitlist at UoC. Yale’s been my dream school since I was twelve. I fell headlong with UChicago only recently, so if I do get into my ultimate dream school Yale (it would take a miracle!), definitely going there.

Which other colleges have you been already accepted to/ got likely?

Just got accepted to UC Davis, waiting to hear back from: Reed, St. John’s, Fordham, Yale, Brown, Georgetown (probably will get into St. John’s, hopefully Reed, really really wish upon a star that I’ll get into Yale and Georgetown, Brown would be awesome if I got in there).

I need to wait on financial aid packages too, because if I have to take out student loans, that’s no bueno. I’d rather not do that and deal with student loan debt later on (these loans, unlike mortgages, are like a ball and chain attached to you for life).

Applied for FA? If yes, what’s your EFC?

Yes, EFC = 0

Were you expecting a rejection or an acceptance?
waitlist, and I got it. deferred ea

Give a reason why you think you were waitlisted?
I feel that I had a pretty poor interview, especially compared to my other schools.

Planning to stay “officially” on the waitlist?
Yes. this is still my top choice

Which other colleges have you been already accepted to/ got likely?
NYU stern, northwestern, umich honors(and I’m pretty sure I’ll get in ross as well). Waiting on princeton and columbia

Applied for FA? If yes, what’s your EFC? No
nope

Haven’t you already gotten into Brown? (as your location indicates)
You should withdraw so that other students get a chance?

^ Its likely. Not yet confirmed. Once the confirmation comes in, I will withdraw my name from UChic.
