Will send in semester grades but will most likely end up at U of Michigan

Finding this thread very interesting, but surprised at the lack of posts from those who were deferred or rejected. Looked at similar thread for Brown and Yale and they were far more informative. C’mon people, it only helps everyone to see how this works (or if, in fact, it’s pretty random). Plus, it’s good to vent.

P.S. My kid was accepted.

Accepted

34 ACT (34 English, 33 Math, 32 Reading, 35 Science)
3.95 gpa

As proud father I am writing this on behalf of my son for all other parents;

Accepted.

Most important thing in my eyes - BROAD. My friend who works in college (not WUSTL) and is familiar with selecting process, said that most important question - if new student can SURVIVE in school: academucally and socially.

My daughter was accepted:

ACT: 33 (one sitting)
GPA: 3.6 UW, 4.3 W; first semester senior year 4 - A+s and 2 A’s
Tremendous upward trajectory from Fresh to Senior year

A lot of demonstrated interest which is key at WUSTL – Got to know local rep by name by meeting him first on campus then at school and at a local event.

Comes from a diverse and economically mixed high school.

GREAT essay and teacher recs.

I really wanted to post my stats regardless of the decision, but I just couldn’t. It was too painful for me. I was deferred, but I feel like I had the “characteristics” for a WashU student. I loved the school, and I had good “numbers”. It just hurts that my stats seem better, at least superficially, than most of the accepted people here(I don’t mean to downplay anyone’s acceptance). What was I lacking? Perhaps applying to the school as an international student and applying for financial aid were just too much to ask from the school.

J. - there’s no point of beating yourself over the deferral. Each candidate is different. It’s really hard to judge. On the brighter side, you’ll still have another chance. If you haven’t, try to make some contact with the admission folks. If you have something worthwhile to update, let them know. Show interest – I think WashU is big on this. Aside from these things, concentrate on other applications. Wherever you will end up going, you’ll be happy and I am successful as well. Good luck!

is anyone else doing the freshman summer academic program?

My daughter is thinking of going to the Arts/Science weekend in June/July.

I would recommend the A&S Weekend. I went last year and it was great. You get to rwgiater for classes that weekend. If you don’t go, you register during orientation in late August. I also made some friends which gave me a small group when school started.

The summer academic programs are much different. You are taking courses and spending weeks on campus. It is also expensive. I didn’t want to lose that much of my summer. I know a few kids on my floor that went and liked it.

Accepted

SAT I: Reading 760, Math 780, Writing 710

Gender: Female

I was so excited to get my letter  I can’t wait to see you all next year!

Accepted (ED)
*My acceptance is contingent upon attending the FSAP. I don’t know why… And it seems to be pretty uncommon (I haven’t heard of anyone else who had a contingent acceptance), but I am definitely going. I figure it was probably because I wrote my essay on moving and adjusting, so maybe the FSAP will help me to adjust to college life? I don’t know… Anyway, here are my stats :)

Objective:
ACT: 33 (composite)
SAT I: 690 (reading), 750 (writing), 790 (math)
AP:
Junior year - AP English Lang/Comp (4), AP Chemistry (4)
Senior year course load: AP Spanish, AP Biology, AP Lit/Comp, AP Psychology, AP American Gov’t and Politics, Calculus BC, AP Macroeconomics, and Anatomy and Physiology (weighted the same as an AP class though)
Rank: Top 10%
GPA (weighted): 4.6-ish
GPA (unweighted): 3.75
Major Awards: National Merit “High-Scorer” (commended)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars: Ecology club/Restoration club and Science Olympiad.
*I have very few extracurriculars because I have a family obligation to babysit my two younger sisters (throughout all of junior high and high school) and because I moved around all throughout my education - 10 schools in less than 12 years, and over twenty or so houses, so it was difficult to join clubs/sports. I emphasized this in my essay.
Job/Work Experience: Worked as an election judge for fifteen straight hours for the November 2012 presidential election.
Volunteer/Community service: Tutoring - officially during my freshmen year (I tutored sixth and seventh graders in all academic areas) and unofficially/on my own for sophomore, junior, and senior year (in the areas of English, Spanish, algebra, geometry, AP Chem, and physics).
Summer Activities: Due to my family obligation (both parents work all year long), I babysat all summer, but it wasn’t that bad actually, since I like my little sisters
Essays: Probably the best parts of my application; I wrote about my experience with moving across the country, and going to ten different high schools, and how that made me an adaptable, positive person who finds optimism in difficult situations.
Teacher Recommendation: Decent; one was from my Spanish teacher, and he wrote good things about me (I’m his favorite student :)) and the other was from my favorite teacher - a chemistry teacher who gave me a love of science. She knows my situation as well.
Counselor Rec: Good recommendation, but he didn’t know me that well.
Additional Rec: I have a close relationship with a sociologist and his wife, a biologist, so they wrote me an additional recommendation.
Interview: Went very well; I heard later on that she petitioned my application for the university to accept me, which was nice of her :)

Other:
State (if domestic applicant): IL
Country (if international applicant): U.S.
School type: Public
Ethnicity: Mixed (White, Vietnamese, and nearly every other European and Asian country, lol)
Gender: Female

Reflection:
Strengths: Essay, demonstrated interest in wash u, my experiences and how i triumphed over them (moving, divorce, poverty).
Weaknesses: Extracurriculars and volunteering, but those were explained well, I think. Also, my grades/tests were merely mediocre.
I was also accepted to Loyola U (in Chicago) with a presidential scholarship, but I declined their offer because of Wash U! :)

I cannot wait to meet all of you!! Wash U has so many opportunities, and they are extremely generous about financial aid. I can hardly contain my excitement! See you in August! :)

Did anyone who got deferred ED get accepted RD? Or waitlisted RD? Or rejected RD after being deferred from ED (like me)?

Admitted my choice is Computer Science Haa much relief
All the best to all of you, my friends
