Other

State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
Intended major(s): Computer Science
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White ( Middle Eastern)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Top
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not sure if being Arab was a hook.

Reflection

Strengths: Me being almost fluent Chinese, most of my EC’s and courses were focused on coding, my teachers loved me and I think wrote great letters, and extremely heavy course load throughout high school. Not really sure if being Middle Eastern helped. I showed A LOT of demonstrated Interest (Visited Campus, info sessions, etc…).
Weaknesses: Low GPA, Physics SAT II,
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I think my demonstrated interest helped because I was very eager to go to this school. I also think my devotion to CS was a realllllly big helper too. I wrote my supplement about my love for Chinese, so it coincided with my background in it (showed I was kinda diverse instead of just being focused on CS).

General Comments:
Genuinely surprised I got in honestly. I was scared my GPA would destroy me but it didn’t. I’m really happy to be part of the WashU class of 2023. #GoBears!!!

Volunteer/Community service: I volunteered at a refugee relief organization teaching Syrian immigrants how to speak and write English before they entered high school. I also worked at a camp for special needs kids.
Summer Activities: startup internship and camp I mentioned above^
Essays: I personally think my essays are why I got in so 9/10, supplement was about my fav play and my philosophical view on it
Teacher Recommendation: probably like 7/10
Counselor Rec: 8/10
Additional Rec: none
Interview: campus visit and interview

State (if domestic applicant): NJ

Intended major(s): Philosophy
School Type: private, graduating class of 23
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Income Bracket: upper middle class
Hook: first generation college and American

Reflection:
Strengths: My essays effectively told my story which I think struck a chord with admissions ppl + I’ll be the first in my family to attend college.
Weaknesses: My score and GPA is WashU’s average which is risky but I’m glad I took a leap of faith

Decision: Accepted (Olin)
Objective: Undecided Business (Also Communications/Film and Media)

SAT: 1370 (730 M/640 R) DID NOT SEND IN… EXTREMELY low for WashU. I had a lot of trouble on the reading section, so I tried the ACT, which was a lot easier for me.

Class Rank: 2/60

Job/Work Experience: Manager at local Dairy Queen. Work ~10 hours a week
Summer Activities: Act in community theater
Essays:
-Common App (9.5/10) Wrote about making paper airplanes with my grandpa who passed away. Made a connection to how I was impatient and my work turned out bad to how people should take time on things they work on/do
-Supplemental (8/10) Wrote about how large businesses inspire my creative leadership skills because of how they start with just an idea and build upon it.
Teacher Recommendation: (10/10) Wrote about how I have been in her classes all 4 years in high school, and how I’ve been one of the best students she’s had in her 30 years of teaching.
Counselor Rec: (10/10)
Additional Rec: (8/10)
Interview: Didn’t have one

State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
Intended major(s): Business and Communications
School Type: Small Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: lower middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
-First Gen college student
-comes from a “low income” family (my parents got divorced, so everything went off of my moms salary)
-Comes from a school where no one has gone to a top 20 before

Reflection

Strengths:
-If anything, definitely my extracurriculars. I have around 10 leadership roles.
-Common App essay
-Reccomendations
-DEMONSTRATED INTEREST. I visited 3 times, emailed at least 4 people at WashU about different things. Had a student tour guide give me their email and I emailed them a lot. Called down a few times to admissions and financial aid.
Weaknesses:
-ACT: 32 is lower middle 50%
-Supplemental essay was kind of bland I feel like
-Lack of AP, Honors stuff, but I couldn’t help that.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
-Demonstrated interest: They really knew I wanted to go to WashU.
-Common App Essay: I think (hope) that the admissions counselors enjoyed reading my essay, because it was close to me.
-Extracurriculars: 10 leadership roles is a ton of work.
General Comments:
-To be honest; I didn’t think I was gonna get in, but with WashU, they want to make sure they accept people that are TRULY interested in going, hence the fact that they added the supplemental essay to make sure that people were actually working on the application, and not just used WashU as a safety school for higher ranked Ivies <Which is lame bc WashU is the best school out there lol

Congrats! Our son will applying for RD…there is a Music and Sports Business concentration in Olin!

With your background you should definitely explore the Music Business…our son is interested in Sports Business.
All the very best!! Hope you get some funding too!

I’m extremely late, but I’ll post my results for Early Decision I.

Pick one:
Decision: Accepted

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.92
Weighted GPA (out of 5.0): 4.36 (no APs / Honors in freshman year)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): No ranking

Senior Year Course Load:

AP Chemistry

PE Weight Training

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Ranked with in the top 300 table tennis players in the USA by USA Table Tennis, AP Scholar w/ Distinction, AP + PLTW Achievement in Engineering, medals at USA Nationals for table tennis and state competitions.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (should be leadership, but I’ll put years):

  1. Computer Hardware Tinkering, I build and tear down computers to build frankenstein gadgets and also do overclocking / undervolting on processors and GPUs + elementary-level Arduino (4+ years)
  2. Table Tennis (4+ years)
  3. Volunteer and Recreational Pianist, former competitive pianist (4+ years)
  4. Super random thing I put on my app: Flight / space simulator enthusiast (4+ years)

Job/Work Experience: None

Volunteer/Community service:

  1. Math tutor in my school's Academic Center (1.5+ years)
  2. Student Volunteer, Event Coordinator and table tennis teacher at a folk arts camp (1 week)
  3. Taught some computer hardware related stuff at an enrichment program (~3 weeks)

Summer Activities:

  1. UC Berkeley EECS - Student Research Intern (Jun - Aug 2018)

Essays: My points came across clearly, but I had some typos + awkward sentence structure. My supplement also went WAY over the suggested word limit (498 words vs 250-300 words). I tried to show and not tell as much as I could.

Teacher Recommendation: AP Physics teacher. Nothing outstanding, but I was an active participant in the class and was (and still am!) interested in learning about the material outside of the classroom.

Counselor Rec: Generic. I never talked to my counselor and she likely used a template

Additional Rec: UC Berkeley professor mentor. My professor commended my initiative to do what I could to learn about and contribute to the project I worked on.

Interview: None.

Other:

State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant): N/A
Intended major(s): Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Biomedical Engineering (considering Pre-Med as well, but I’ll see how first semester goes)
School Type: Hyper-competitive Bay Area public high school known for grade deflation
Ethnicity: Chinese / Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $100,000 - $150,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None. Anti-hooks were: Asian male applying to engineering

Reflection:

Strengths: GPA + SAT + AP scores, extracurricular commitment.

Weaknesses:

  1. I had essentially zero leadership positions and I did not start / create / lead / join any clubs in high school. I also have relatively little extracurriculars / interests.
  2. I planned my senior year schedule with rampant senioritis in mind, so the course rigor wasn’t so great and definitely could have come across as me trying to slack off.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I showed demonstrated interest; I visited campus over the summer, attended my school’s information session hosted by the regional AO, and was on the mailing list. My academics also fell within WashU’s range, at least for SAT scores

General Comments: I 100% expected to get rejected from the school since my profile is less than stellar / superstar compared to the applicants I saw on the results only threads for past years. Consequently, getting accepted was “a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.”

Anyone accepted into Sam Fox? Can you please post stats?

Decision: Accepted College of Arts & Science

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 1560
SAT II: 800 math
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 Weighted: 4.4
AP (place score in parenthesis): 4s and 5s on the usual suspects
Senior Year Course Load: The usual (a bunch of AP classes)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMF (not major, I know)

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Joined and founded several clubs
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: Minimal
Summer Activities: Various academic camps
Essays: Probably fine
Teacher Recommendation: Probably fine
Counselor Rec: Probably fine
Additional Rec: Letter sent by Uncle who is a very involved alum
Interview: On-campus

State (if domestic applicant): CA
Intended major(s): Math
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: High (did not apply for financial aid)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy

Strengths: Grades and scores
Weaknesses: ECs, probably
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Applying ED2 and having a legacy connection helps. Being full pay also likely helps somewhat, since Washu is need aware.

Decision: Accepted into Business and Computer Science Dual Degree (school of engineering)

ACT: 33 (35 Science, 34 English, 32 Math, 32 Reading)
SAT II: 740 Math, 640 Biology

State (if domestic applicant): Connecticut
Intended major(s): Biomedical Engineering, Business/Computer science joint major

Gender: Male
Income Bracket: High no financial aid
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: ECs
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My ECs

General Comments: Everything is scaled. If you have great ECs, you can compensate for an ok GPA. My ACT score was basically average. I showed a lot of demonstrated interest. Also, I am a tri-varsity athlete and very involved with my school community.
