Official Wesleyan ED 2013 Thread

Since my son is trying to decide about Wes ED2 and Rd and Brandeis is on his Rd list (and we visited Brandeis it was a school holiday so students werent around)could you elucidate the diffs you feel betwwen Wes and Brandeis? Thanks

Yeah, when I posted that it was 7:24 p.m. (in my time zone...dunno where you live) but the timestamp is 7:34. Creepy.

It's interesting how some people think they're so similar and others think they're so different... I guess it's just because people weigh different components of a school differently?

I mean, they're both intellectual, artsy, Jew-filled, relaxed, political, one's a large LAC and the other's a small university...

1) In response to classicalguitar8: I got that financial aid email you were talking about... did that mean that we missed some deadline for the financial aid application? I made my parents send in all the forms the second I got the email. I really hope their response isn't delayed now.

2) To (z): I got into Bard IDP too! which day did you go?

aaaand finally, I'm freaking out as much as all of you. Are any of your friends just terrified to see how you'll react if (god forbid) you don't get in? My college counselor told me last week that she was having her "chat" with Wesleyan today, and my imagination's been running wild thinking about what they discussed. I guess she'll be telling them my first quarter grades, but do you think counselors have the power to help sway their decisions significantly?

Mindy, I went to Brandeis in the '70's and my son is at Wesleyan, having seriously considered Brandeis. Flyingpig (hi fp!) is right, they're similar in many ways. After visiting both schools a couple of times each, my son's impressions (not much different than mine) were that Wesleyan's academics were more rigorous and Wes students were more political, more intellectual and more athletic, with more frat culture. He thought Brandeis had a better Music Department, felt much more Jewish, had a more cozy campus (Wes has city streets running through it, Brandeis is an enclosed campus) and much nicer dorms. At both schools, students were friendly, artsy, and really interesting, and professors seemed excellent and approachable. They feel similar in size and undergraduate focus. He had a hard time choosing between the two (and also really liked Bard) but is very happy at Wesleyan and thinks he made the right decision. He's also pretty sure he would have had a great experience at Brandeis.

Hi again, Skie!
I should have listened to you when you suggested Brandeis to me!! I have already applied ED to Wes, however, and I think I will like it, as you (also) said, as long as the "frat culture"y things are avoidable. :)

F_p, it seems like the frat culture at Wes is low-key and not snobby/exclusive in the traditional way. Also I hear that even Brandeis has a couple of fraternities now, so maybe the two schools are not that far apart on that score anyway. I suspect you're going to do just fine! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you for Wes ED. And if things don't work out for Wes, you'll get a shot at Brandeis. Lots of good possibilities.

That's just what I wanted to hear!!
You're good at doing that :)

yup! that was me but i went back to both and decided wes was where i want to go so hopefully in less than a week ill be joining the wesadmits group and so will everyone yayy!!!

but abt brandeis i did an overnight and not everyone is that awkward you just have to find the right people. clearly wesleyan rules though!

gem: My IDP date was 11/15. You?

oh, I actually think my friend was there that day, but I was nov. 22nd. I thought it was a really cool program. Wish I could've heard from wes that quickly!!

Yeah, it really is a great thing. I wish more schools had that -- but it would ruin the uniqueness of it.

Hi everyone, I'm Wes ED also. I submitted my app end of October. I've been reading this thread for a while and finally decided to make a username! I'm so anxious the wait is driving me crazy- I also did Bard IDP and agree that it was a great program... rids some of this stress.

Hi EnglishPhoto!! Hahah, we were being watched!! Glad you decided to join us :)
What is your username about?

Haha, it's what I'm planning on studying in school :) Does anyone else have millions of supplements to write if they don't get in!?

i have millions..........................................
im planning to apply to a lot of schools and if i don't get in
i will have to skip Christmas and write essays.....

hey guys! i'm new too. I applied ED to wesleyan, and I am SO nervous/anxious/excited! eek! I just wanted to say that I've been reading through all of these threads, and am I the only looking forward to partying in college???? I mean frat parties sound sweet. I don't want to be locked out of "the college experience" because I chose Wes. Not to say that I'm not interested in studying; please, why would i want to go to one of the top schools in the country JUST to party. But i really hope that we have some fun along the way. THOUGHTS?
Oh and any other math majors?!
I hope we all get in, you guys sound like suuch cool kids.

hi seeenyah!
wow we've been watched by many people.....:)

im excited about the social life at Wes too!!!!!!
(of course that includes partying.....teehee:))
like i don't want to miss all the fun u know.... (though i will study really hard at wes:))

sadly im not a prospective math major...
im interested in art history and film studies;)

In response to the question about living it up at Wes:

YouTube - Party On Fountain

Notice how incredibly well-done this video happens to be. Yeah Film Department!

I visited for my birthday and everyone was so incredibly nice and fun and cool. The nights I spent at Wes were the most fun I have ever had.

yeah I visited my friend there and literally one night consisted of going to a play, stopping by a concert, and then going to 3 parties -- and that's just what the upperclassmen were up to. I'm pretty sure the freshmen mostly (although not exclusively) stick to themselves, which is fine by me. Anyway, there certainly isn't any risk of getting bored no matter what you're into.
