General Comments: In the past weeks I’ve been rejected by UChicago and Duke. Today I got rejected by Harvard and Yale. Tomorrow, I take on the theory of strict egalitarianism; I take on Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative; I take on Aquinas’ argument from contingency; I take on the economic calculation problem; I attempt to use economic analysis to analyze the marginal social benefits of barriers to voter registration. If my failures have taught me anything, it’s that I need to work even harder; it’s that I need to challenge myself to limits I had not previously foreseen. Has all my work up until this point been pointless and flawed? Most likely. Will I ever be able to revolutionize the way the world viewed? It’s doubtful, but, after today, I’m determined more than ever. Up until this point in my life, I didn’t have any chips on my shoulder; now, I do. I was basically in tears for the first two hours after I saw my fate, but, now, I’m ready. I’m glad I didn’t get in because now, things are different; now, life moves in a different direction.

Subjective:

**Extracurriculars/B: Big one for me is United States Senate Page (promoted to Floor Page) in Spring of '09. Also, Young Democrats (3-year Prez and Founder), Teen Court (3-year Prez), Member of two Jazz Bands for Alto Saxophone (1st Chair), Member of Show Choir, Varsity Football (Senior Squad Lifting Captain), Varsity Wrestling, Math Team, NHS and Key Club, Church Group.

Job/Work Experience: I put U. S. Senate Page here as well, as it was a salaried job. Also was a “Young Ambassador” for my City’s Chamber of Commerce.

Volunteer/Community service: Various things, organizing for Political Campaigns, working in Nursing Homes, Tutoring, “Volunteen” at a Hospital, no real focal point to this section.

Summer Activities: Training for Athletics 3 days a week from 6-10 AM M-W-F. Hosting an exchange student from France, working as a Young Ambassador, seeing the world (I put it a different way when it was asked).

Essays: Wrote a great one about working back from crippling leg surgery in Middle School to start for my Football team as a Senior, and an average one about how important a role donuts play in recruitment to our Young Dems group

Teacher Recommendation: From Math Teacher at Senate Page School (they don’t let their students see their Recs, but they’re supposed to be fantastic), From French Teacher I had in a College Course I took.

Counselor Rec: Great

Additional Rec: From my Senator

Interview: Fantastic, fantastic interview.

Other

**State/B: Wisconsin

**Country/B:

School Type: Small, rural public

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: No need-based Financial Aid

**Hooks /B: What is URM? Only hook is that I’m from a small town, I guess.

Reflection

Strengths: U. S. Senate Page (there are only 60 each year who work and attend school there), leadership, reasonably good scores on tests. Also, well-rounded.

Weaknesses: I don’t have a good school I’m coming from, My 2nd essay could have been better. Volunteering could have been better, but my schedule was pretty full.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
ED Helped a lot. I thought I was pretty well rounded with Athletics, Academics, and Leadership. Interview was fantastic.

*General Comments:
I applied to HYPSC and was waitlisted at Stanford and Harvard, and accepted to the other 3. I’m likely to go to Yale, but I’m visiting the three I was accepted to.

[/ul]General Comments: I’m depressed but I will get over it. 4 more years until we try again!

^I cannot believe this. I am sincerely and deeply sorry. However, I am sure there will be a spot for you from the waitlist

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2350 (780cr / 770m / 800w / 12e)
[] SAT II: 800 mathII, 790 bio-e
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.83 (8 semester B’s!)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): no rank.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5, 5, 5, 4, 4.
[] Senior Year Course Load: most rigorous, as always.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): see below.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): art (10x int’l/nat’l awards, 3x int’l/nat’l publications in books/magazines, 5x int’l/nat’l/local galleries, city-wide activities, and over a decade of independent study, lessons, classes, and workshops… submitted portfolio), culture club (president), service club (president), multicultural club (leader), social outreach program (president), yearbook (exec. editor), school summer program (director/recruiter), school board (elected official), research, and miscellaneous volunteering.
[] Job/Work Experience: a little bit here and there, but nothing major.
[] Volunteer/Community service: worked as a TA and volunteer instructor, but they weren’t anything crazy amazing.
[] Summer Activities: art, work, volunteering, research, traveling, and relaxing.
[] Essays: my commonapp was a narrative rooted in a studio experience in which I reflected on my experiences with self-hate and the definition of beauty in the Asian community, and how believing anything but those influences and drives me in my artistry, goals, and outlook in life. it was probably too soul-baring and maybe slightly cliched, but definitely one of the most honest and well-written pieces i’ve written in my life. this was submitted for SCEA so it wasn’t ironed out yet (1000+ words and a few typos). my yale supplement detailed a creative process behind some maniac-art that i do, picture included–it was pretty hilarious too.
[] Teacher Recommendation: excellent, but probably not anything jaw-dropping to admissions officers.
[] Counselor Rec: fabulously done: i’m sure it came out lengthy, descriptive, lively, and stuffed to the brim with anecdotes. we get along great.
[] Additional Rec: excellent and descriptive.
[] Interview: not the best, simply because i was one of my first. we got along great though, but i didn’t feel star power streaming out from me.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Deferred SCEA?: hell yes!!
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: no
[] Intended major?: art, but i wrote about double majoring in art + academics in why yale.
[] State (if domestic applicant): midwest
[] Country (if international applicant): usa
[] School Type: small, secular, suburban, competitive private.
[] Ethnicity: east asian
[] Gender: male
[] Income Bracket:
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ECs/leadership despite switching high schools,
[] Weaknesses: gpa–8 B’s, and on top of all that, i’m asian.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: no one knows, but there was a painting of a bulldog in my art portfolio (my school called yale post-deferral and they said they really liked my artwork). i also sent three updates (one in novemeber, two after january) stressing that yale was absolute my first choice. my counselor wrote another letter and called twice. definitely, definitely, definitely demonstrated interest helped.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
accepted: yale, harvard, cornell, columbia, swarthmore, wesleyan, pomona, nyu, carnegie mellon, uiuc, wustl, uchicago
rejected: penn, brown, stanford, princeton
waitlisted: nowhere!
[/ul]General Comments: i CAN’T believe this… honestly, this is a dream come true. some words of advice: if you really want to go to yale, apply early: it gives you the chance to at least get deferred and demonstrate how committed you are. in terms of grades, you don’t need to be 3.9+ even if you’re an ORM (as shown here)-- just prove yourself in different aspects as a smart, interesting, passionate person, and you’re good. congratulations to everyone and condolences to those who received bad news. i’m sure we all have the power to take control of our college experience and be successful and happy. good luck!!! :)

Hey, Papex, if that was directed to me, I actually was copying and pasting from the Harvard thread and I forgot to change the part that said “waitlisted”! I guess I don’t see an “Edit” button so I don’t know how to Edit or Delete my post. But I was accepted EA, sorry for the misunderstandings guys my bad.

I’m assuming this was directed to me ;)

Thanks for your sympathy. However, I’m not getting my hopes up for any of my waitlists, except maybe duke, which I’ve heard usually takes 100-200 off the waitlist of 1000.

^Stupefy, that’s awful to experience. I’m sorrowful on your behalf. But YUCK FALE. They didn’t deserve an awesome individual like you, anyway. Go where to a school that accepted you, LOVE IT, and have a blast.

Perhaps we’ll meet up in grad school.

[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: a decent amount.
[] Summer Activities: CTY, internships, volunteering
[] Essays: not stupendous, but pretty good.
[] Teacher Recommendations: great.
[] Counselor Rec: didn’t read.
[] Additional Rec: from a piano teacher - not as good as I expected it to be, actually. I sent it to yale in february after being deferred.
[] Interview: went extremely well. I definitely made sure he knew that yale was by far my #1 choice.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Deferred SCEA?: yep.
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: no.
[] Intended major?: Chem
[] Ethnicity: asian fmlfmlfml
[] Gender: F
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): asian = antihook
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: transcript, music stuff.
[] Weaknesses: too many SATs [both reasoning and subject tests], didn’t use score choice, average-ish essays
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: :frowning: I’m not good enough for the ivy league, apparently
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted at Swarthmore, Hopkins, GW, Carnegie Mellon, UMD. waitlisted at Princeton and Duke. Rejected from Columbia and Yale
[/ul]General Comments: it’s gonna take me months to get over this, not even kidding. I’m still talking about yale 24/7 and then have to make myself realize that I got rejected. it’s been my dream school since middle school. I was hoping to make it into at least one ivy but it didn’t work out that way…probably going to attend Swat or Hopkins.

Ohh, and btw for future yale hopefuls: if yale’s your number one choice, only apply SCEA is you’re positive that you can put an AMAZING application together two months before the regular deadline. My SCEA app and essays were miles below what they became in the two months between SCEA and RD. Now that I think about it, the first draft of my yale supp essay - the one I ended up sending - was absolutely horrible compared to its subsequent revisions for princeton and columbia. If I’d applied RD, I’d have fewer regrets right now.
