Official Yale Class of 2014 RD Results Thread

Decision: Accepted

I am also from Canada (Greater Toronto area)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2140 single-sitting (670CR, 790M, 680W, 9E)
[] ACT: 35 single-sitting (35E, 35M, 33R, 36S, 10E)
[] SAT II: Math II 760, Biology M 760, Chemistry 780
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Average of all completed Grade 11/12 courses is 93.8%
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 2% for sure
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Haven’t taken yet
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: English, Studies in Literature, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Advanced Functions, AP Calculus, Vocal Music
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Just school-wide recognition: Grade 11 Biology Award, Grade 11 IAPS Award, Grade 11 and 10 Vocal Music Award.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Yearbook Committee (Head Photographer)
Music Council (Vice President)
Concert Choir
Chamber Choir (Members are hand-picked by the choral director)
Mixed Voices
Sounds of Toronto Choir (Also hand-picked)
Photographer for school paper
Math/Science tutor
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at my church for two years.
[] Summer Activities: Earned my National Lifeguarding Service and necessary prerequisites over the last three summers.
[] Essays: I though my common app one was pretty good, but my supplement could have been better. I talked about accepting myself for who I was and for the other one I talked about my passion for photography.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was excellent. The other wasn’t as in-depth and insightful as I thought it could have been, but still very good.
[] Counselor Rec: Got my choral director of four years to fill it in since my counselor barely knows me; excellent.
[] Additional Rec: None
[] Interview: I thought it went pretty well. I got requested for an interview on Feb 27 which surprised me since I thought interviews were way over by then. I was the only one who got an interview out of all the people I knew that applied.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Deferred SCEA?: No
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended major?: Biology: Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental, although I might pursue Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry instead.
[] Country (if international applicant): Canada
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian (75% Chinese, 25% Filipino)
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: 60-70K
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I don’t think so?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Marks, ACT score, essays, great recommendations, interview didn’t hurt.
[] Weaknesses: English marks (in the 80s), only 1 year of French on my transcript, SAT scores, SAT Math II score.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no idea. I was expecting a rejection for sure. Maybe they saw something in my essays that they liked? My Advanced Functions mark (96%) made up for my crappy SAT Math II score, and my ACT score overshadowed my SAT scores. With the exception of Vocal Music and no French, I’m taking the most rigorous course load available (my school offered AP Calculus just this year and I jumped on the opportunity). I also thought my application was well-written and my responses to the questions were original and well-versed.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to all Canadian universities I applied to (with the exception of McMaster Health Sciences since decisions for that don’t come out until early May): University of Waterloo, University of Toronto (St. George), University of Toronto (Scarborough), McMaster University. Yale was the only US school I applied to.[/li][/ul]General Comments:
Wow! Was not expecting an acceptance at all. My mind was already set on going to McMaster! I knew Yale was going to be a long shot but I didn’t think at all that I would make it. Yale still needs a couple of tax forms from my family before they can finish my financial aid package, but I don’t think that’s going to be a huge problem (hopefully). It’s too bad I can’t attend Bulldog Days since I have a school concert to perform at/photograph on the 20th.

Rejected, but at least I’m not the only one:
[YouTube - Hitler gets rejected from college](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w3YJjdXZBM)

Yes that was for Stupefy. I know the whole process is unpredictable, but still, at this level of achievement, I think there must be an objective reason for rejecting you. After seeing other results such as Chibistar6’s I might start to believe in the anti-asian conspiracy theory.
Stupefy, would you choose Duke over Williams?

[/ul]General Comments:
Incredibly excited, I’m strongly leaning towards Yale, just going to use Bulldog Days to confirm everything for me. Cannot believe this happened!

Wow, Stupefy. I’m really sorry to hear this. I’ll say the same thing as ksarmand, F Yale.

^Thank you for your sympathy. For some reason, I’m getting the most sympathy posts lol. Yeah, I did get slaughtered. but it happens, and there’s nothing I can do now. I’ll get over it soon enough

I won’t believe in an anti-Asian conspiracy theory, simply because asians DO get into ivies. it may be harder for us, but we do. evidently, I am not good enough of an Asian for them ;)

If you had asked me that last week, I would have said duke in a heartbeat. but over the past few days, I’ve researched Williams heavily and I absolutely love it  I will commit there soon, probably right after I visit, but if Duke takes me off the waitlist, I will definitely give duke some serious consideration.

Posting my daughter’s information, for the benefit of future applicants

Decision: Deferred then Accepted

[] Essays: They were honest, and showed my personality well. Lots of nerdy science and a bit about canoeing. I thought they were pretty good, but looking back on them I realize that they did not show my passion for the school. MIT was my top choice and Yale was an afterthought–this might have shined through.
[] Teacher Recommendation: from college professors and high school teachers who knew me very well
[] Counselor Rec: an amazing person and an amazing writer–she knows me very well and has been there for me all throughout high school

[] Strengths: research, college courses, lots of APs, Siemens AP award
[] Weaknesses: low GPA
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m taking courses at another university through Early Enrollment in lieu of my senior year; officially, I am already enrolled there. Though MIT and Caltech were okay with it, it’s possible that I was considered as a transfer at Yale. Otherwise, I probably just wasn’t a good fit for Yale, and I’m grateful to the admissions committee for recognizing this.
[/ul]General Comments: I had already gotten into MIT and therefore was not particularly crushed. ;)

[] Teacher Recommendation: Both from teachers whom I loved, so great I’m assuming.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t see either, but good as well.
[] Additional Rec: Principal of my school who used to be the head teacher for my grade; talked about all the ways he sees me contribute to my school.
[] Interview: Current Penn Law student, went well.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong writing skills, down-to-earth, genuine essays, unique quality of my school
[] Weaknesses: Did not know as much about Yale as other schools when applying
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I am extremely passionate about international development and will definitely use my “skills for good”
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Wharton-UPenn, UChicago, Georgetown SFS, Arcadia, Drexel; Waitlisted at Harvard (stayed on just to see), Brown (declined waitlist)
[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone accepted! To those who weren’t, realize that many of the qualities that you loved about Yale can be found elsewhere. My dad attended 3 different universities of varying prestige and now teaches at a different one and what he always tells me is that it isn’t the university that will control your education, it’s you. There are hundreds of great universities in the USA, not just 8. Of course Yale is a wonderful institution with amazing opportunities, but attending a state university or less prestigious school will not impede any career plans you may have. You define your path!
