[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothing?
[/ul][ b]Reflection**[ul]
[] Strengths:Academic rigor, unique background (very international), well rounded?
[] Weaknesses: Test scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I have no idea! I guess they saw something in me
[/ul][ b]General Comments:** My best advice is PLEASE don’t do things just for your “resume”. I soon realized that once I did the things I liked to do (not just “resume padders”), I was more successful and happier. Just find something that you LOVE and keep on doing it. It can be particle physics or knitting, but never give up! You will receive much more satisfaction in life if you don’t devote your time to trying to impress admissions officers.

Also, I’m really excited for this opportunity! Maybe I’ll see some other admits in New Haven next year  To those that were deferred, don’t lose hope (some deferred DO get accepted during RD)! As for those rejected, college admissions is an extremely subjective process. You are MUCH more than you can express on your application and I’m sure all of you will eventually end up somewhere great where you will THRIVE!

[] Essays: I thought they were really strong. One talked about my experiences in Curacao and opportunity vs potential, the other was about how my homeschool experience has helped me through public high school.
[] Teacher Recommendation: English + Calculus teachers. I’ve known both for two or three years, so hopefully they were good.
[] Counselor Rec: Written by the head of the guidance department, but she’s not even my counselor. Doesn’t really matter either way, my counselor would be pretty bad too.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: TERRIBLE. Met at a posh members-only club, had to dress up in suit and tie. He was co/72, really fit a ‘good ol boy’ stereotype. We didn’t connect at all.

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I really want to change the world, and make a positive impact on the environment. Also, I think I’m somewhat unique in being a practicing Buddhist and doing stuff like African Dance
[/ul][ b]General Comments:**
I actually can’t even believe it. I was SO convinced I was going to get deferred. I can’t believe I’m actually doing one of these stats thingys now!
To everyone deferred/ rejected: You’re still awesome! You can make a positive impact in this world no matter what school you go to, so don’t short sight yourself! Believe in yourself! It’s the only way you’re going to get where you want to in life, by having confidence in who you are.
To everyone accepted: This is so unreal! Can’t wait to see you at Bulldog Days and live with you on the old campus in the fall!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:• SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (800 CR, 720 M, 780 W)
• ACT: None
• SAT II: 800 World History, 780 Lit
• Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.98
• Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 3/500ish (but my school doesn’t report rank)
• AP (place score in parenthesis): Music Theory (5), World History (5), Statistics(5), ABCalc(5), English Lang (5), Art History (5), Japanese (5),
• IB (place score in parenthesis): None
• Senior Year Course Load: AP Compsci, AP Bio, AP US Gov, AP Comp Gov, AP Lit, (post-AP) Japanese 5, (post-AP) Art History Independent Study
• Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing major

Subjective:
• Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Art History Club (Treasurer), lots of music-related stuff… orchestras, chamber groups, performances.
•Experience: I run an art gallery and do freelance music gigs. I have a lot of performing experience.
• Volunteer/Community service: Performing in church
• Summer Activities: Various prestigious summer music festivals/programs. Took last summer off.
• Essays: Common app one was very strong and creative, supplement essay may have sounded slightly pretentious or slightly rough around the edges (wrote it in a day or two). Common app short essay on extracirriculars was pretty terrible, if I’m frank.
• Teacher Recommendation: One was definitely very strong (Japanese teacher) and the other was probably pretty good (AP Lang teacher)
• Counselor Rec: She seems to like me, so probably pretty strong.
• Additional Rec: Cello teacher submitted one for me. Didn’t see exactly what he wrote, but he’s always been quite generous (read: highly praising) with recs.
• Interview: Didn’t have one

Other
• State (if domestic applicant): VA
• School Type: Large Public, got a record number of kids into Ivies ED/EA this year
• Ethnicity: White
• Gender: M
• Income Bracket: Enough not to qualify for need-based…
• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Musician(?)- I’ve had a lesson with the cello teacher at Yale and he seemed to like me

Reflection
• Strengths: Submitted two arts supplements– overly liberal artsy
• Weaknesses: Not very many school-related extracirriculars or awards.
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: In addition to having relatively strong stats, I have a strong passion in one area (music), which probably put me over the top. I think that I also communicated strengths in areas outside of my passion (My application was obviously very music-heavy but also mentioned art, literature, language, and history)
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Music school auditions coming up in the spring!

General Comments: To future applicants reading over decision threads… find something you love. Pursue it. Find a few other things you enjoy that complement your interest and make you a genuinely interesting person. Be quirky, be interesting, be original.

Reflection
Strengths: Grades, Scores, probs recs, did a lot of ECs, a lot of APS
Weaknesses: Awards, none of my ECs were extraordinary (pretty generic), no legacy, no interview (i feel like it might’ve helped)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I was expecting deferral because I don’t think anything other than my extremely personal essay (which because it was kinda risky they might not have all loved), made me really stand out. I was just as qualified as everyone else but I didn’t have the one thing that made me really special.
General Comments:
Congrats to everyone who made it! Yale is an awesome school but it is not the only school. In fact, I’m pretty sure it accepted the least percentage of early applicants out of all the Ivies this year. To all those deferred/rejected, I understand your pain and agony. We have to wait even more now but we’ll end up where we’re supposed to go. Even if it’s not Yale

Decision: Deferred

[] Teacher Recommendation: fantastic from two really quirky cool teachers. I haven’t seen them because of my waived right to view but both probably talked about my passion, sense of humor, multidimensionality, etc.
[] Counselor Rec: also fantastic: the counselor is great and I know her very well; I run all my essays by her (I don’t have extra college counselor)
[] Additional Rec: unsolicited letter from Physics teacher, probably amazing as well.
[] Interview: great; I hung out with the alumni person for an hour and really hit it off.

[] Weaknesses: I don’t know. I could have taken more APs, I could have worked harder at SATs, etc. I think I should’ve had something really cool and unique about me but whatever.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: there are so many applicants and there’s always something more I could have done. They just weren’t looking for me this time around.
[/ul]General Comments: congrats, good luck and my condolences to respective candidates. Hope to get into a nice college, even if Yale rejects me in the spring. See you around.

State (if domestic applicant): South Carolina
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public with 1 national merit every so often (moi)
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: I’m not sure. I get free lunch at school.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (African American)
Reflection
Strengths: Test scores (for an AA…), URM status, well-written essays (writing is my ‘thing’), Activism
Weaknesses: Not too many ECs, no show of academic interests in my ECs, Class rank, — basically everything except my strengths
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I should’ve taken subject tests sooner. My grades are not as strong as they could be. None of my ECs are yaleworthy. I didn’t present myself in the right way. My essays were all about an academic interest (psychology) that nothing in the rest of my application demonstrated interest in. In future applications, I plan to take a different approach that might make me a bit more marketable.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Tis SCEA, dude.
General Comments: I do hurt inside a bit. But I’ll get over it. There is still very much left to do. Once I get through the grief.

too much hype…

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Course load, extra curriculars, counselor rec,
[] Weaknesses: I was too generic, no real personality came through in my application, interviews, scores maybe
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Not eye-grabbing enough, too generic
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
Well done to all admitted!! Some of my friends were and I am so happy for them. Obviously a bit gutted, but am now motivated to really stand out at my other schools… attempting some risky supplement choices… Maybe, I’ll get in RD, but honestly, being deferred has made me realise that there is just much more to life than Yale, and that some schools would really actually love to have me, so to focus on them! :)

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (730 CR, 800 M, 770 W, 10 Essay) (2nd sitting)

[] Job/Work Experience: summer job at the beach
[] Volunteer/Community service: team captain for walk for lupus, volunteer at local hospital
[] Summer Activities: Governor’s School, working, volunteering at the hospital
[] Essays: Common app essay was decent; it had the overcoming obstacles theme from a childhood experience. It was definitely creative and unique, though the message could’ve been cliche. The supplement was about my love of baking and its connection to chemistry. My engineering supplement was about engineering…yeah.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read them. One of them should be pretty amazing (the teacher is known for great recommendations, and she liked me). The other was probably generic
[] Counselor Rec: Nothing special, the conselors have so many students that it couldn’t have been too personal
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: My interviewer was great and really friendly. He said he’d try to put in a good word for me, but he understood that the application process is super competitive anyway.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[] Intended Major: Chemical Engineering
[] State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public, about 2000 students
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: >80000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): woman engineer
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Being a woman going into engineering helps, and my interest in chemistry was evident throughout my application
[] Weaknesses: My common app essay might not have been strong enough, and I don’t have any real hooks
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I’m the average Yale applicant. i have leadership, good scores, and decent essays. However, nothing makes me stand out from the pack. I’m interested in science, but I never won any science fairs or research awards. I’m just another smart but not brilliant girl.
[/ul]General Comments: To everyone deferred or rejected: I feel your pain. However, I know that I’m still talented and I will get in to a good college; it just probably won’t be Yale. My advice to future applicants is to find your passion and pursue it and start something great. To all those accepted: CONGRATs! I’m so jealous! You’re definitely going places.
