Decision: Rejected (and proud!)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2230 single-sitting (760 CR, 720M, 750W), 2280 super-score (770M)
[] ACT: 35 (33E, 35M, 35R, 35S, 10e)
[] SAT II: 800 Math II, 750 USH, 740 Physics, 720 Bio-M
[] Unweighted GPA: 4.00
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (5), Spanish Language (5), Calculus AB (5, self-study), Music Theory (5, self-study)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Biology, AP Microeconomics, AP US Government & Politics, AP Psychology, AP English Literature & Composition, AP Statistics, Honors Spanish V, Wind Ensemble
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Honor, various school stuff, county science fair 3rd place
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): MUSIC (~25-30+ hours a week), Model UN (Treasurer). But really, music was the bulk of my ECs. Marching band, school band, school orchestra, community band, community orchestra, lessons, adjudications, etc.
[] Job/Work Experience: school cafeteria worker
[] Volunteer/Community service: ~90-100 hours, mainly general community service stuff and music
[] Essays: Not Pulitzer-worthy, but fairly good
[] Teacher Recommendation: sent 3, I’d assume all of them were at least 9+/10, but I didn’t read them
[] Counselor Rec: no clue. Our counselors have changed every year, so I doubt it was extremely well-written or personal
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: N/A (had one for Yale, but not for NUS)

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Of course
[] Intended Major: Chemical Engineering
[] State (if domestic applicant): California, SF Bay Area
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: y public, roughly 400 in graduating class, ~150 of which will pursue some form of college education
[] Ethnicity: didn’t state
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: enough, but not enough to afford college without aid
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Interesting essay topic (languages/linguistics), lots of music stuff
[] Weaknesses: lack of diverse ECs and work experience, little community service, no major awards, choice of major, “average” scores (for Ivies)
[li] Why you think you were denied: I lack the “Ivy-quality” that seems to be possessed by all those who get accepted to Ivies. Also, they only can accept ~5-7% of applicants, so I had no chance to begin with.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Not really upset at all. I didn’t really expect anything since it seems Yale-NUS is more difficult to get into than Yale (judging by the SCEA thread). Congrats to anyone who got in, good luck to those of who are checking now that you realize it’s up, my condolences to those of you who didn’t get in either.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2230 (CR: 720, M: 790, W: 720)

[] Unweighted GPA (out of 100): 95.4
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
[] AP (place score in parenthesis):
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: Probably the most demanding possible.

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Involved in establishing numerous educational frameworks, including an early childhood development center in Nepal.
[] Job/Work Experience: Served in the Israeli army for three years, in both combat and educational service.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Aside from what I listed above, formed and led a youth group of Arab and Ethiopian teens, took part in establishing a child club, volunteer as a counselor in the Israeli AIDS awareness organization.
[] Summer Activities:
[] Essays: Common App one was one of the most heartfelt pieces I’ve written. This must have made the difference.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Great. Went to a very small, rural school. Teachers knew me very well.
[] Counselor Rec: Same.
[] Additional Rec: From the founding director of the NGO I worked with in Nepal. Stellar.
[] Interview: Went pretty well, I think.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.

[] School Type: Public

[] Income Bracket:
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essay, ECs, recommendations
[] Weaknesses: “Average” SAT score.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: See strengths, and I guess I stood out?
[/ul]General Comments:
It’s still hard for me to fathom this. I’ll probably realize how big this is once I see the acceptance rate. Good luck to those who were denied/deferred, don’t lose hope!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2280 Superscored over three attempts CR: 750 M: 770 W:770 E: 8

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Head Boy of school, independent research paper I wrote, a couple of mun awards, editor and secretary of the business economics newsletter & the club respectively
[] Job/Work Experience: worked as a digital marketing intern at a company 6 months
[] Volunteer/Community service: very little and basic
[] Essays: seemed okay to me, can’t really say more than that
[] Teacher Recommendation: both were from teachers who really like me
[] Counselor Rec: very generic
[] Additional Rec: this was good, from my school principal
[] Interview: went off quite averagely to be honest
[/ul][ b]Other**[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yeah
[] Intended Major: Economics
[] Country (if international applicant): India
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Indian

[/ul][ b]Reflection**[ul]
[] Strengths: ECs
[li] Weaknesses: High School curriculum is not exactly challenging, nothing stands out
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: congratulations to everyone who got in :)

**Decision: Rejected. Expected. :expressionless: **
not posting stats because its futile. and aint nobody’s got time for that!

Decision:Rejected

Objective:[ul]

[] SAT I (breakdown): 2030 [CR 680 Maths 680 W 670]
[li] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0[/li][] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/568
[li] Senior Year Course Load: 6 AS Level Subjects and 4 A-II Subjects
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Drama Club (President), Sports Club (Vice-President), (Head) of Student Council, (Captain) Track and Field team, (Editor-in-chief) of School Magazine [main things among others]
[li] Volunteer/Community service: ~20 hours (few but I had just moved from another country in my junior year and I was more than just baffled)[/li][] Essays: I would consider it very good. I presented my personality well. Also recieved enthusiastic responses from two people.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was good, other okay-ish.
[] Counselor Rec: It was really good; he showed me after everything was over.
[li] Interview: Didn’t give one.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]

[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes. I’m an international student.
[] Intended Major: Economics/Psychology
[] Country (if international applicant): Pakistan
[] School Type: Private and well reputed but unconventionally huge.
[] Ethnicity: South Asian? (if there’s such a thing)
[] Gender: Male
[li] Income Bracket: ~100,000
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]

[] Strengths: GPA, Rank, EC’s to some extent, a cosmopolitan lifestyle and a socially/ethnically/economically/politically diverse background
[] Weaknesses: Low SAT scores, little community service, no work experience, no national level awards (like I said, I had to switch countries)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: OMG, I just found out that I didn’t send my SAT scores (however low they were) to Yale-NUS directly and unless Yale University forwards them to Yale-NUS, they never received my SAT scores… wow, I feel pretty stupid right now but in my defense I’ve applied to 28 universities and I was bound to screw up somewhere. This and among other reasons mentioned in the weaknesses section[/li].
[/ul]General Comments: I’m not so much sad and disappointed as worried. If I was rejected from Yale-NUS there’s probably a high chance I’m going to be rejected from the real Yale as well and THAT’s upsetting. Unless I’m wrong and what @musicislife73 says is true.

I’ll post what I wrote in the other thread since I’m still at school right now, but I’ll update later with a complete list.

Decision: Rejected w/o interview (BTW, we need to mention whether we even got interviewed! That’s relevant.)

Unweighted GPA (or equivalent): 3.83 UW (4.77W)
SAT (breakdown): 790 CR 690 M 800 W 2280 total for best score, my lowest score is still 2100+
ACT: Did not submit
APs: All 5s, Chem, Euro, US History, Psych, Lang, Human Geo
Senior Courses: All APs, Comp/US Gov, Physics C, Calc BC, English Lit, Macro/Microecon, World History
Essays: (mine are for Yale) wrote about why I love history, who inspired me to love history, and why I want to teach it. CA essay was about my exchange program and how it changed my worldview.
Extracurriculars: president of an exchange program, varsity debate, latin club president, honor society, peer mentor, peer tutoring
Community Service: 2000+ hours at a community center over 5 years, Head Intern. It’s actually part of the reason why I don’t have as many ECs.

Decision: Deferred (without interview)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2190 (CR: 690 Math: 800 W: 700) 1st and only attempt
[] ACT: NA
[] SAT II: NA
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): NA (My school doesn’t use the GPA system)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10%?
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): NA
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): NA
[] Senior Year Course Load: H2 A Levels - Physics Math Chem Econs
H3 A Levels - Econs
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None
[/ul]
Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): String Orchestra (Student Conductor, Sectional Leader), Science Students’ Research Council, participated in a couple of science and math competitions and won awards, research projects with defence science organisation
[] Job/Work Experience: Interned at church after 10th grade, interned at national water agency after 11th grade, interned at ministry of education after 12th
[] Volunteer/Community service: Not much outside church activities. Served in various committees at church.
[] Summer Activities: Under job/work experience
[] Essays: Average? Although I had fun writing it haha
[] Teacher Recommendation: Wasn’t allowed to see it
[] Counselor Rec: Also wasn’t allowed to see it
[] Additional Rec: NA
[] Interview: Not called up
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Engineering for everywhere else, undeclared for ync
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): Singapore (although that makes me a domestic applicant…)
[] School Type: Public independent
[] Ethnicity: Asian - Chinese
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket:
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: A level results? Had to upload it after my A level results were released even though interviews were over by then (2 March)
[] Weaknesses: Lack of any notable achievements I guess
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Strengths?
[/ul]General Comments:
Was fully expecting a flat-out rejection since I wasn’t called up for an interview, but looks like I have to wait for another month or so. We’ll see how it goes then.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): CR-690/Math-790/WR-690
[ *] ACT:
[ *] SAT II: Math II-790 and Physics-800
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 94%
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):1/256

[ *] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: My stats don’t even deserve waitlisting. It is my ECs and interest in Yale-NUS that gave me this…

[/ul]General Comments: They say that waitlist decision will come around first week of May. Now, that is a major problem but let me see what can I do.

Rejected.

Deferred round 1 without interview

Looking at all of our statistics, I find it more and more impossible to discern any type of pattern to their admissions. Why you, and not me? Gold star if you can tell me why I wasn’t offered an interview, at the very least.

Decision: REJECTED w/o Interview

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 790 CR 690 M 800 W 2280 single sitting
[] ACT: did not send
[] SAT II: 800 Chem 790 USH 750 Lit
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.83, 4.77 W
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school does not rank, at least top 5-10% of school
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Fives on all tests. Euro, US History, Chem, Psych, LangComp, Human Geo
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: All APs. US/Comp Gov, Physics CEM, Macro/Microecon, Calculus BC, English Lit, World History
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Distinction, a minor Essay award
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Foreign exchange program (president), Latin Club (president), School’s Honor Society, Peer Mentoring, Peer Tutoring, Varsity Debate
[] Job/Work Experience: Self-employed private tutor
[] Volunteer/Community service: 2000+ hours over 5 years at a small community center, Head Intern
[] Summer Activities: travelling to Asia, exchange program, summer camp head intern at said community center
[] Essays: CA essay was about exchange trip and how I learned to keep a more open mind, Yale essay talked about my love for history, how it started, and why I want to teach it
[] Teacher Recommendation: English teacher’s known me since 9th grade, Physics Teacher’s known me since 10th and is sponsor for a club I’m in
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent to just below excellent. We’re really friendly, and he wants me to succeed.
[] Additional Rec: did not submit (probably should’ve, hmm…)
[] Interview: HA. YEAH RIGHT. I WISH. I’m so totally not bitter over this at. all.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: History or PoliSci
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: large public magnet
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: 130k, but it’s not like I ever ended up reporting it
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Standardized testing scores, Senior curriculum rigor, Commitment to Volunteering
[] Weaknesses: Essays, Low-ish UW GPA (had a lot of honors/AP classes, so there’s a gap between UW and W), EC leadership (I didn’t fully explain all the crap I have to do as president of the exchange program), did not fully demonstrate the interest I had in this school
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: See Weaknesses. I really don’t even understand why I didn’t even get an interview. I wish I had applied Round 1 and had tailored my essays more to fit the school. The checkbox through Yale just doesn’t cut it.
[/ul]General Comments:
I’m pretty bummed out by this school. I’m almost offended I didn’t get an interview, and the admissions process is shrouded in more mysticism than the Ivy League. Congratulations if you got in, hope you have fun in Singapore.

Decision: Accepted

Objective: [ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): (unreported) CR-650, M-660, W-610

[] Job/Work Experience: n/a
[] Volunteer/Community service: Infrequent, but weekly community service at local good distribution centre
[] Summer Activities: Oxbridge Summer Program in New York, Ivy Scholars Program
[] Essays: Standard; CA discusses my love for philosophy and cities, Yale-supp talked about my role as a global citizen, Why Yale - the grandeur of it and my personality
[] Teacher Recommendation: Should have been good. Never read it, but frequent intellectual discussions outside of class
[] Counselor Rec: Standard, just discusses how I was fitting in (i’m new to current school)
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview:Skype, went really well and shared many similarities. Was quite personal, throughly enjoyable.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?:Yep
[] Intended Major: PPE
[] Country (if international applicant):Hong Kong/Malaysian
[] School Type: Private, comprehensive
[] Ethnicity:Chinese/Asian
[] Gender:Male
[] Income Bracket:n/a
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):Generally not an a-hole?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:I probably tried really hard to come across as confident, but really willing to learn. Variety of subjects since GCSE-level showed my commitment to the liberal arts maybe?
[] Weaknesses: Mediocre test scores, minor grammatical errors in essays (last-minute scrambling)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Definitely will come off as pretentious, but I think I’m a pretty standard Ivy candidate willing to reinforce the school’s stereotype.[/li][/ul]General Comments:
Congratulations to everyone else who got in! To those who didn’t, remember, there are other colleges, and the world doesn’t owe you a living.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 750 CR, 790 W and 800 M
[] ACT:

[] Essays: Decent
[] Teacher Recommendation:

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[] Intended Major: Medicine related
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): Malaysia
[] School Type: Private A level school
[] Ethnicity: Indian-Chinese
[] Gender: Male

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None that I know of.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores and academics
[] Weaknesses: Weak essay. No oympiad etc.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Good interview where I showed a passion for learning.
[/ul]General Comments: I’m happy but I don’t think I’ll accept it because I have an offer for medicine at Cambridge. Great fun applying though and to those who didn’t make it with such a low acceptance rate, most of these schools are just luck and nothing to do with a lack of ability.

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): SS: 2170 (M: 760; W: 750; CR: 660)

[] SAT II: Physics: 790 Math II: 790 Chemistry: 780

[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank, although I had the third best result among 250 kids in my school.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): No APs. 5 CIE A Levels in Physics (A), Biology (A), Chemistry (A), Maths (A) and Economics (A)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate (2 Years), Student Government (1 Post for 1 Year), Yearbook Team (Member), Student Correspondent for School (1 Year), Model UN (2 Years), Math and Science Society (Member)
[] Job/Work Experience:
[] Volunteer/Community service: - 100 hours
[] Summer Activities:
[] Essays: Decent, I think. CA essay was about public speaking and one particular way in which it has helped me; Supplement essay was about the circumstances which prompted me to take a gap year. (The essays could have been better, of course. I found a few grammatical mistakes and a a couple of awkwardly phrased sentences a couple of days etc.)
[] Teacher Recommendation: Average-good, I think.
[] Counselor Rec: I didn’t read it. I think it’ll be generic since a new counselor was appointed this year.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: Not offered.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes (I wasn’t asked to submit any documents or forms, though).
[] Intended Major: Physics.
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): Pakistan
[] School Type: Private.
[] Ethnicity: Asian.
[] Gender: Male.
[] Income Bracket: - $20,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.
[/ul][ b]Reflection
[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong A’ Level grades, SAT II Scores. Essays (maybe? I’d rate them a modest 7-8/10)
[] Weaknesses: CR Score. Average ECs. Essays could have been a tad bit better.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: No idea. I think I had it coming.
[/ul][ b]General Comments:** I honestly think I am average applicant at best. Considering that my essays could have been a bit better if I had edited them with perfection, I think I have given up the little chance that I might have had. My Yale interview went average, at best, too, so here goes the dream. Good luck you all!

Seriously, most of those accepted are Asians, especially south Asians…

please delete this post

I was accepted and I’m from Canada!

Is it just me, or is nearly everyone on this thread who has been accepted an international student? Also, I’m probably the only one stupid enough to do this (give me a break, it was late at night), but I also probably didn’t get in because my “Why Yale?” paragraph was specifically about Yale, not NUS. I didn’t even think about it when I clicked the box to submit to both. Oh well. Congrats everyone!

@musicislife: I’ve made a bigger blunder - I forgot to send my SAT scores and financial aid documents to Yale-NUS >.<

[li] Why you think you were accepted: I think yale nus looks for people who are adventorous and want to try new things. i’m like that. [/li]also, my app was specific to yale nus (i didnt apply to yale). I the interview I showed a lot of interest in yale nus, since singapore is actually my first choice.

[/ul]** General Comments: **
To all those rejected or deferred, don’t take it personally. Most of these places look for a specific kind of people as opposed to people who have good scores and ECs. There are so many people who I felt had worked harder and were more talented than me and didn’t make it.

To all those accepted, I hope I get to meet you at the Yale NUS weekend!
