Hey, I'm a junior and I'm looking at instate options and cheap OOS options. GCSU = Georgia College and State if you do not know. I know Oglethorpe is a private school, but it is cheaper then most LACs and Flagler is even cheaper than OU. Flagler is a great deal financially and the location is very good. They have some strict rules though. I'm looking for an urban/suburban area. The three schools are probably going to be my safeties. I really like Oglethorpe, but name recognition/academic rigor wise all three schools are lacking. I'm also worried about GCSU's location, Millidgeville isn't exactly NYC. NYU is my dream school, xD. If I stay instate, I will want to go OOS after college. What do you think about the three schools? The schools aren't talked about a lot on CC. Any feedback?

At Flagler, you won’t get that “typical” college residential experience. With all their rules & so on, it isn’t for everybody! If you are looking at schools in Florida, have you looked at Eckerd in St. Petersburg? Their “Average % of Need Met” is 87%.

NYU is not noted for financial aid, if that is a concern for you! Going to grad school there is always a possibility, so don’t rule it out altogether!

Everybody has to think about money these days!

What do you want to major in?

PSAT is today. Good luck and hope you studied hard, prepped, and took practice tests. Focusing on the immediate goals is more important right now.

My wife enjoyed her years at Oglethorpe (decades ago). She knew most of the students and had close relationships with a number of the faculty. It certainly fulfills your desire for urban/suburban. It is in a suburban section of Atlanta, but if you don’t have a car you have good access to MARTA and the rest of the city. Yes, name recognition for any of these schools is thin and regional. This should only be important if you think you want to settle outside of the region when you graduate. My wife had no problem landing a job with a financial services company in Houston immediately after graduation and nobody there ever heard of Oglethorpe, but it was a much better job market then.

Every student at GCSU that I know is very happy and so are their parents. Many refer to it as a hidden jewel.

In my area of Georgia GCSU has a great reputation and is considered the public “LAC” in the state. I have only heard good things.

Thanks so much everyone!

Jym- I took the PSAT today and previously took a practice test and looked at my old tests answers from last year. I thought it was a lot easier, especially the math sections. I learned a lot of new math in one year and I think it helped me. I need to practice my vocab and learn some more SAT words. But it went very well :)

SLUMOM- Flagler has its advantages and disadvantages. The school has a beautiful campus and it is very cheap. The money makes it set for my family. I do not like their rules at all. I am from South Florida, I lived there ten years. I am not a huge beach goer. I lived about twenty minutes from the beach and only went a couple times a year. The beach is nothing special to me. I will go once in a while, but I will not go on vacation to go see a beach. In Georgia, people act like the beach is “heaven”. I love to swim (on swim team), but I prefer swimming pools lol. Flagler has that surfer dude feel which is a turn off. I don’t want to go to college for a beach. It is a choice nonetheless though.

I want to major in Print Journalism. I would major in mass communications and have a journalism concentration at these three schools. I want to go into arts journalism and my dream is to work for a travel magazine. Also, I am interested in becoming a talent agent or a casting director. I also have an interest in screenwriting and I have a passion for the Holocaust.

I’m open to go back to Florida. I looked at Eckerd before and they have a communications major, but they have no journalism course offerings. Rollins College doesn’t even have a communications major. Florida can get too humid and I am eager to go to the northeast and have a different climate change. I love Georgia’s weather though, it is perfect!

If you look at my interests, none of these schools are perfect. I would really like to go to NY, Boston, Chicago, or LA. I really want a urban, but small/medium school experience. But the Hope Scholarship is also hard to pass up and there is always graduate school. I do not want to be in too much debt. If I went to LA, I would like to audition while I’m in college. I have been acting since I was six. I get the feeling that Cali is too superficial and not as down to earth as the northeast.

Ctldad- I would probably have a car if I went to OU. I do not know that much about the school. Thanks!

GCSU does have a good rep here. I think it is very underestimated as a whole. I am def going to apply there. I am worried about the conservative leaning though. I am liberal and I want to fit in at college. I am also worried about the area. Will I get bored? I want to do more then party.

I also do not know if these colleges have the intellectual climate. I want small class sizes and class discussions and I would like to be challenged. I do not want to be too stressed though. I know I have plenty of time. My GPA will change this year and I am taking the SAT in Jan and ACT in Feb. I just want to have back ups that I like. Thanks everyone!

GCSU is known around here for their Nursing and Education programs. They have a tendency to be a suitcase college. Alot of partying is done on Thursday night due to students going home on the weekend.

Alot of partying at the local lake and bars downtown. Recent scandal with the clubs and some NFL player didn’t help. Some greek life.

Thanks! I know a lot of people in my area who are at GCSU and I’m not close. I’ve never heard that before, but good to know. In Georgia, there really aren’t great public colleges after UGA and Tech. I wish there was more to choose from.

Any other feedback
